- msaleem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I completely agree. Offer what you can actually provide.
- RockMyMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Funny. When I see their ads in PC mag, I find them to be very questionable. The ads make them look like the Wal-Mart of webhosting.
- LordSkywalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I use Geocities! They're the best!
- Hoovooloo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Wow... this is the first story you have ever commented on, and the last story you dugg was over 200 days ago... suspicious much?
- jpt62089, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I absolutely hate their ads!!! 10 pages is WAY too freakin long for an AD!!!
- snlildude87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Dreamhost is fine, in my opinion. My site gets about 35,000 pageviews a day, and it has no problem handling digg traffic.
The terabytes of bandwidth is too good to be true, but then again, I've never gotten close to hitting the 1 TB bandwidth, yet. For those wondering, I use about 10.17 gigs of bandwidth a day. - apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3OMG... soembody got what they payed for?!
- romeyinfc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ironic that a rant about crappy web hosting is down itself... Can't access it at 9:30pm PST
- joaob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Had them for 3 years on their smallest package that they were giving away for free. Hosted a couple of little things there and never had a problem.
After the 3 free years of the "Professional Package" (as they called it then) I decided to upgrade to the Developers Package. Sure I understand that it's shared hosting and I should expect much...but it's still money out of my pocket for a service.
2 days after signing up and transferring my main site to 1and1 my site went down for 5 days.
. - MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i've found that user experiences with hosting companies seems to vary on a large scale. i'm very happy with 1&1. sucks to be in his position though.
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I've been using them for a year and have had no troubles. However I have mostly very low traffic sites and wouldn't consider myself a demanding user. I suppose you get what you pay for... live and learn... and so on.
- habibbijan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4It's simple: Bandwidth != CPU time
Herein lies the problem with shared hosting packages from any hosting company, not just 1and1. Their sales pitch sounds stellar. Many hosts easily boast of fifty gigabytes of storage space or more, with bandwidth stretching into the terabytes, all for less than $10 a month. Many offer “unlimited” subdomains and SQL databases, which of course is unfeasible. What they decline to tell you is that the ONLY way you will be able to harness these resources is with static HTML pages and large, static file downloads.
The problem here is that most web sites no longer function in this late-90s manner. Most sites are dynamic, and include processor-intensive scripts and databases. Hosting a Content Management System (CMS), a forum, or a blog in a shared-hosting environment is fine provided that only a few users at a time are accessing the data, but a sudden surge in traffic can cause even a single Wordpress installation to consume “excessive” resources in the eyes of a shared host.
Wordpress + cheap, shared hosting + digg effect = dead site. Be sure to read the Terms of Service (TOS) for any "shared" hosting plan. Almost all of them include a statement about "excessive resource consumption." If you must stay on shared hosting, the wp-cache plugin is absolutely essential. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3So what do you guys think about dreamhost then?
- TibarNapies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been using them for 2 years now with no problem. In fact, their customer support has been fantastic. I had a political site in 2004 that was literally getting 250,000 unique visitors a day and everything held up fine. But then, I have a dedicated server through them and am not using shared hosting. Anyone who is expecting heavy traffic to their site should be smarter than this guy and not use shared hosting. I think the submitter had unrealistic expectations with what he was buying, and that's not 1and1's fault.
- fishie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1whos mike jones?
- dan_cameron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Even after a year I still get comments on my experience with 1and1.
http://dancameron.org/general/929 - NCUthMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The hosting is bad enough, but try canceling an account!
They simply would accept my request to cancel.
To get my account canceled, I finally canceled the credit card the account was billed on and added *@1and1.* to my spam list. - jaa313, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is *very* difficult to cancel a 1and1 account (similar to the AOL stories that I hear)! Just try and unsubscribe to their newsletter after you have cancelled your account - not gonna happen.
- moogog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't understand how you can honestly expect a site to take a digg effect and stay up on a shared account for $4. It's called a digg effect for a reason, and no matter how much bandwidth or disk space you're alloted the amount of requests the server is going to get it better be a really low load shared or something better. While yes the handling by 1&1 of this matter is *****, the fact that you actually thought this might work just shows a lack of research.
- jessethouin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I only have dedicated servers with 1&1, 2 of them actually, and the only problem I've had in 3 years was last week, and it was my fault. The machines scream, the bandwidth is ridiculous, and I always get a prompt response. But I pay a couple hundred bucks a month.
The moral of the story: you get what you pay for. If you need an entire server to suit your needs, don't expect $4 and a promise to fit the bill.
PS Off topic, but Firefox's spell check is amazing. I'm just sayin'. - osearth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Haven't had problems yet.
Although i had no sites running and only 1 SUPER small cronjob that just lynx'd a page not even saving it.
they killed the crontab without notifying me.
and once their mail was backed up for a week pretty wack.
dreamhost does some strange stuff.. to be sure but i will probably go back to them when my $7.77/year wears out. - msaleem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My account was canceled promptly, and the domain was transfered within 3-5 days.
- jpt62089, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I love em, they work just fine for me, of course I don't necessarily use it for actual use though... lol
- Snowknight26, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"One Digger's Experience" says a whole lot about everyone else and their individual opinions.
Some may be happy with their service, some may not. It just depends on what the customer expects. - LordSkywalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been using them since 2003 when they had a free hosting special. My site is still up, still free over 3 years later. Then again, it's not a high traffic site.
- cds0528, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11and1 has been fine for me, I actually use them because of the good reports friends have given me, strange.
- diggerdubai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they crap in the UK too , total joke
- thewump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This does not suprise me. I signed up for exchange server hosting with them.. what a joke. It didn't work, I couldn't get support, then after all that, the process to claim your "money back guarantee" was more than I went through getting a US green card.
For hosting:
exchange server: dslextreme.net
General: http://www.hostasaurus.com - atbnet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've used 1and1 since July and had no problems yet. If I need anything mission critical, I'll use my own dedicated server.
- ghutz11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Isn't that false advertising?
- rawM3TAL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That lasted about 35 seconds.
- motoole22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1A shared hosting service that moves your site to dedicated resources when its over-taxing the shared server sounds awesome!
- Jo9100, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Let's frontpage that
- onixxino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1agree with cds0528. I have been using 1and1 for over 2 years and everything has been going very well for me. I dealed with customer service once, the girl was a little bit dumb since she doesn't really know what htaccess can do. But just it, cheap host, high uptime, easy access. Oh well, weird.
- mike503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i agree. 1and1 did not leave a good impression in my mind. i ordered a dedicated server from them and had issues, never got to access it even, got charged a whole month if i recall. it was a while ago and i try to forget the details. i just remember i would never go with them again.
- GameNasty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01and1 is the worst hosting service on the planet - I used them for 7 months - Nothing but problems.
- crossers, on 07/21/2008, -0/+0funny history. weeks ago I have similar experience ))

http://www.chasr.org/ - londubh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been happy with 1&1, but I'm always looking for a better host. They only support Python 2.2.1 unless I get a dedicated server, and, well, I'm cheap, and being cheap you get what you pay for.
- brhad56, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Dear Blog Author...You want some cheese with that whine?
- petenice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0An Indian 1&1 customer service agent just hung up on me. I would not recommend this host.
- spinal007, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I've been having a similar experience with 1&1 hosting and it seriously makes me feel sick to imagine how incompetent their customer service is...
http://fyneworks.blogspot.com/2007/07/1-hosting-by-far-worst-service-in-world.html - tieone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Speaking of bad hosting companies, the one that surely top them all is the Roundberry/Hostedtoday/Advantages1web consortium. It's the same company and the same crappy hosting solutions. They'll literally make you lose your mind and they’re a bunch of filthy liars. With them all the "cliché" about bad support customer services become a reality, meaning a n-i-g-h-t-m-a-r-e. And when you have reaches the point of no return they'll start messing with you knowing that you won't renew your hosting plan with them. Also, you’ll realize very quickly that the "99.9% uptime" they guarantee is a misrepresentation. If you expect a site that will run smoothly, takes this advice; STAY AWAY from Roundberry/Hostedtoday/Advantages1web consortium. Especially if you're putting lots of efforts to run a successful business and paying for advertising.
A typical answer I remember from their miserable "support department" after they had made an unauthorized transaction on my credit card was; "Please hold tight until we get back to you." That says it all! - hydoskee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I use 1and1, and they really are the worst host ever. Arbitrary upload limits and TERRIBLE transfer speeds, up and down. I'm glad somebody finally said something on digg.
- TalenKlaive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The only problem I can see is that possibly a script on his site might have been using more than the available CPU allotment. I've been using 1&1 for a long time, and haven't had any problems with them at all, keep in mind I don't have anything hosted there that generates a ton of traffic. If a site uses more than its allotment, it will get taken down. Period. They never said that the site was using more than the allotted bandwidth, but I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't spike the CPU and/or memory usage, and in that case, they are well within their right to disable and/or move the account.
- aerophe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I have been using 1&1 for a couple of years now for several of my domains, and I have had nothing but good experiences. They must have gotten worse over time. I used to call customer support and talk to an english person right away and they were very friendly. Its too bad that companies think they have to save money at the consumers expense. I would still recommend them though. Very good deal and I love the ability to check my bandwith very easily so I know when I need to buy some more. kyle
- krunkosaurus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1HOTM:
Dreamhost rocks my face off. I've had no problems with their shared-hosting service. My only qualms are they don't support Coldfusion or postgreSQL. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I was looking at media temple, but like I said went with VPS link. MP is $20 a month, but I guess it's working. I want to see if this VPS can handle digg before I switch to media temple. $20 for shared is a bit much. Granted it's on a grid but still >.>
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6Any company that oversells their bandwidth is *****. I rather a company that offers 200 gigs b/w and 5 gigs disks pace than 2000 and 50 anyday.
- Xavipheus, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1Looks like your just being a dick, I love 1and1 and all of my clients use them. They are great and I've never experienced any downtime in over 4 years. Plus they are always upgrading my account with more features and allocating more resources, such as bandwidth, space, mysql db's etc. Its awesome.
