- stilesja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think the most impressive thing about this video is its accuracy. How many idiot reporters do stories on the "The Internet" these days and you just want to wring their neck because they are so stupid. Here is a news man in 1993 no less that gave an accurate representation of the internet at the time. Thats impressive in itself. But what is more impressive is that the underlying principles have not changed. Sure its flashier. Sure the big corps have attempted to usurp it for their own advertising means. But the people out there using it are still there for the same reasons as those in 1993. Free Porn. ;-)
- adamS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Borders still count for something" - nice little dig at the end there.
- Gotar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow the modem sound how classic. I haven't heard that sound in a while.

- ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old clip, but still a good one. I digg.
- jjordan2004, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that is freakin hilarious!
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's interesting is that they presented the Internet as though it were going to become the "killer app" that would put a PC on everyone's desktop. How right they were!
- darkwhisper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good digg
- CaptSnuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I can indulge my deep and abiding passion for all things Thai."

I was 2 when this video came out! lol - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice find. I digg it.
- Nothlit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0At least they weren't calling it Information Superhighway. That was pretty annoying even at the time.
- adamS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Regarding the change in how we refer to the Net. I suppose it would be proper grammar to call it 'Internet' as that is how it appeared at the time - an internetwork of computers around the world. It's much more than that now, as if it's somehow been consolidated into a single being - The Internet, I think, is our way of showing acceptance, by making it a proper noun.
- Computer_Kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WOW, When Can I conect to this "Internet!" LOL
- leobreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what is this "INTERNET" they speak :-)

- DannyPage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Then: "Scientists share information on new research over the internet."
Now: [Insert P2P joke] - MacMan88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol...i love how (the) internet has evolved from a noun (internet) to a proper noun (the internet).
reminds me of mr gwb's internets, :-P - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, I guess that makes you cooler than the rest of us loner... I hadn't see it before - interesting to watch. Thanks for sharing.
- incu_vamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0:-( i'm serious
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I found that really interesting. I remember reading an Newsweek article in high school (prolly about 1994) about this new thing for computers that would have "pages" of information and some words on those pages would be highlighted. They said you could be reading a story about Baseball on a page stored on a computer in Ohio and after clicking just a few of these "hypertext links" you could end up reading a story on WWII stored on a computer in New Zealand. I thought that was just about the coolest thing I'd ever heard, now we could care less where the pages are stored. Side-note: anyone else remember when web pages had no images on them?
- unScarred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Need a "retro/nostalgic" category... I digg this... brings back memories of my first SLIP dial-up account using Trumpet Winsock on Windows 3.1... :-)
- incu_vamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thats awesome
- avocade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did they show a Swedish flag while saying "... in Oslo ..."?! Oh yes they did.

- DrunkenDevil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great Digg. Seems like "Internet" might be around for a while. :-(
- dbrodbeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is great stuff. I have been on the 'net since 1986, and in the early 90s and late 80s I would have much trouble explaining how it worked. Nice report, wish I had seen it then...
- CJHtxGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry for double post, but doesnt everyone know you can just right click and "View Page Info" and goto media,,, and get the all the direct links there? Listen to kevin rose more people! lol
- nuxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, things really have changed, huh??
not to plug or anything, but i encourage you all to watch this, and then visit my blog, the second newest entry is a little something i wrote on the state of the internet today, and where it's taking the world.
www.livejournal.com/~randomtransit - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So? I can chain together or network my He-Man action figures better than this intertron can do it. [/inane trolling]
Quite a find. I guess I missed the whole hoo-ha about the internet back in the day since I wasn't much into computers until much later (I'm talking about geek level "into". That was around 1996). I think I remember some Time magazine thing on it back in 1992 or something. Man, were we n00bs back then. "New fangled" is the right term to use for this flashback. - LeeVal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL Borders still count for something
- motionblur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0stilesja:
It's interesting that you comment about the reporter. Unfortunately he just died this year from cancer: http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2005/03/12/cameron050312.html
Bill Cameron was a class act as far as reporting is concerned.
The case he mentions was the Paul Bernardo & Karla Holmolka case. There was a publication ban on details from their trials. Those details were leaked by a University of Waterloo student at alt.fan.karla-homolka and "Internet" made the news because of it. In fact I remember seeing this news story live at the time. I was like holy crap this Internet thing sounds awesome! LOL...
Because Holmolka was recently released I did a search for the newsgroup and found everything thanks to the mightly Google:
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/alt.fan.karla-homolka?start=4660&hl=en
And in other news, Peter Mansbridge (the anchor) hasn't changed a bit! - dopenose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great digg.
- GuyNextDoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome...I love how it was just called "INTERNET" sounds like a Simpsons episode with Kent Brockman reporting!
Homer says "Welcome to the internet my friend, how may I help you?"
Heh... - WonkoTheSane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0My god look at peter's hair line!!!
- WonkoTheSane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"And in other news, Peter Mansbridge (the anchor) hasn't changed a bit!"
read above post - LoneSniper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I am sure this has been posted before of Digg or another 'news' site as I saw this months ago.
- Nothlit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0For those who've apparently forgotten the rules of grammar: the inclusion of the article "the" is not what makes a noun proper. Proper nouns are simply names that are capitalized. Therefore, I would argue that "Internet" (uppercase) was a proper noun 10 years ago but has since evolved into "the internet" (lowercase, more generic) today, no longer proper.
