- thedez, on 10/12/2007, -4/+40i say BOO to rebates. great find though.
- tritium, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17I totally agree with you. No matter how great the price may appear on the page, its contingent on waiting 6-8 weeks for a check that may, actually, never arrive. I'm sorry, but I simply won't purchase a product whose price is artificially low as a result of some wild $50 mail in rebate.
- kajoob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Yes, on occasion. You noticed that this was in the "Tech Deals" section before you posted, right? Of course you did.
- klawz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I boycott any non-instant rebate. If they want to sell at a good price, then do it WHEN I CHECKOUT not 3-12 weeks later. Non-Instant rebates make me shop around more.
- jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Yeah, rebates don't count. We need to stop buying rebated items to stop this crap.
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Back in the day you would see tech deals on the homepage almost all the time.
- TroubleInMind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have found buy.com to be quite reliable FWIW. Have done business with them fairly consistently for about three years.
Consider that people with poor experiences are ten times more likely to share that experience than people who were pleased. - Celeron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Read the ratings and reviews: http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Buy
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Good luck getting those rebates.
- blacktaco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3At last my faith in humanity is restored. Take this man's advice please.
- kajoob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Here is the link to the rebate:
http://ak.buy.com/buy_assets/retail/pdfs/06Q4/1211-1231dw_50linksys.pdf - diggmaddy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7HELL NO. They're very good in shipping out the items, but God forbid if you need to have some post purchase service, it'll be just a big waste of time.
- icekold, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5At this point just reading the name buy.com makes my blood boil. Just yesterday, I had to explain to my daughter that "Santa" made a mistake and is gonna have to mail her Pink Zen M by UPS after Christmas. I bought it way back on Dec 2nd. It showed in stock and ready to ship. Here's the worst part though...NOT A SINGLE EMAIL, CALL, or ANYTHING to inform me that they had oversold the item or whatever the problem is. Only when I started getting anxious and went back to their site to check did I see that they were now all of a sudden "ON ORDER". Bastards.
- klawz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@Monkleto - he did say why. Maybe he posted just "hell no" and you commented after he edited it? I don't get YOUR comment unless he did only say no, then edited it last minute.
- klawz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Damn crappy reviews - I can tell you I've only shopped with them this month, I bought 8 things from them, each over 50.00 to save the 20.00 with googlecheckout. They shipped most of them on time, one item was shipped about 5 days after my order, but the other 7 were shipped within 48 hours, and arrived in about another 2 days (free shipping). So I know one experience like mine doesn't outweigh the only 40% they are getting in the reviews, so I consider myself lucky.
- Rooker156, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2but are you going to bring along that router in your briefcase when you travel?
- Backlash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I refuse to buy anything from Buy.com. I had purchased a Superman Returns HD/DVD from them a month ago as christmas gift for my brother. I used the $10 google checkout promo and at the time the product was "In Stock". 3-weeks later I logged on to buy.com to check the order status and it said "processing/backorder" as I had not yet recieved he DVD. I had to search online for a 800 customer service number (as they don't list it on the website) and talked to a nice indian gentleman that said that the product was out of stock and there was nothing he could do. I logged back onto the buy.com site and tryed to cancel my order and after a week I'm still waiting for the cancelation to be "approved". Unblieveable! I ended up going to BB and buying the DVD for $35 instead of $20 deal I thought I was going to get at buy.com.
DO NOT BUY FROM BUY.COM! - ynggrsshppr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Is buy.com a reliable merchant?
- riverside71, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Buy.com sucks.. big time.. they're the biggest bait and then not even switch but just keep-you-waiting-and-cancel-the-order con artists
happened to me twice so far.. once on a 1GB CF card deal.. they kept me hanging three months and then just cancelled the order..
another one was with a Panasonic microwave purchase.. again.. order went right everything looks great and bam.. they just arbitrarily cancel the order.. their Customer service is the usual crappy Indian pass-the-headset-till-u-get-routed-back to-the-USA where someone can actually understand what the issue is..
all in all.. if it's a great deal.. forget getting buy.com to honor it.. - Nothlit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I try to steer clear of rebates if I can help it, but I must admit that of the dozen or so rebate items I have purchased in the past few years, I have never failed to receive the check in the mail, usually a lot sooner than I anticipated. I have only ever had trouble with one item, which was a cell phone purchased through Amazon, but a 5 minute phone call fixed that, and I received the check a week later...
That being said, I have never bought anything from Buy.com, so I have no idea if their rebate process is good or not. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2buy.com is a huge internet merchant, probably coming close to Amazon's volume, they have deals like this day in day out. Most go smoothly, when something does go wrong (or something is unreasonable) you get a flaming bad review on customer review sites, big surprise! It's not as if after you receive your order you think "oh I should post a good review on 5 or 6 business ranking sites" so obviously this is skewed. I've heard bad things about other companies that are mostly true (tigerdirect) but for Buy.com, they haven't done me wrong yet. Some buyers are just high maintenance idiots, take a look at that moron who posted his ipod experience at the top, no doubt he bought a refurb without reading WTF he was buying and wanted to return it, buy wouldn't take it because it took 9 days to deliver? Well you can blame UPS for that one, if it was important and he was shipping it direct to his father he should have ordered 2 day maybe? But the 50$ he thought he was saving on the refurb ipod wasn't enough to consider an extra 7$ on the shipping. BFH. Also he recommends tigerdirect after...yeah...
- airj1012, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow I went through 3 pages and couldn't find one good thing about them. The best that was said for the company was Somewhat Dissatisfied. I was actually thinking about sharing this great deal with a friend but reading the reviews has let me decide otherwise. I thought Buy.com was a good company, but I guess I was mistaken.
This is the power of reviews and the internet so people don't have to go through the same experience others did. This is truly the age that is concerned and controlled by the consumer; the way it should have been structured a long time ago. - slick_rick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ordered the router and received it in two days but when I opened the shipping box I found Xmas presents inside and not the router. I emailed Buy.com but I've yet to hear back from them.
- br1ucf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2buy.com is down there with tigerdirect... i've had more than 1 bad experience with them
- Spr0k3t, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1For all the years of shopping, I may have received two rebates back after thirty years of jumping through hoops. If it's 12.99 after rebates, it's still an $89 purchase. I'm glad some companies are doing away with mail-in rebates... I hope the world follows suit.
- gottatufa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Re-BAIT is what it is. Takes 1-4 weeks for delivery, but you need the price code off the original box and it is over on the 31st? I don't think it is happening...
- allholy1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have this router and I really don't like it. First off, the firmware source was never released so there is no 3rd party firmwares out there (DDWRT, Tomato, OpenWRT etc.). Also, with 3 college students using this router we download a lot of various files... you all know what 21 year olds download.... torrents always lock up this router and forced me to unplug it. I've gone through 2 of these.
That is just my opinion, maybe others have had better luck. - pyrexia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1When buy.com first started out they used to be great and consistently have good prices too. It seems lately though that everything that made them great has fallen away. Now they are full of ads on every page, post-sales support has degraded and the good prices just don't seem to be as good as they once were. The best thing they have going for them now is the google checkout deal.
- Urbantank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Man that deal is off the hook!
- kalleanka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@Nothlit
I'm glad to hear you have never had any problems with mail in rebates.
But I and many of my friends have had bad experiences with rebates. Most times things work out great, but the 10%-20% times it does not work out good is a pain in the ass.
And there is nothing you can do. I mean no normal person would sue a corporation for a $10 or or $30 rebate that is lost. They have just stolen your money and you are left buying something overpriced. - kualla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1too add to reasons not to buy at buy.com...
A few months back I had ordered some rechargable batteries and the ones I had ordered were advertised as 2500mAh but when I received my package they were only the 2000mAh, which I could have ordered for much cheaper elsewhere. After searching for their number(which is ridiculous to find) and talking with someone, the only option I would have had was to send them back which would then cost ME return shipping!!! And for their false advertising/mistake/*****! I know that isn't always the case but I would be extra careful with buy.com, they will try and pull a fast one from time to time. Also had rebate troubles a while back with an item (I think USB hub or something) saying I didn't send proper stuff when I highly doubt I messed up considering I always read and then reread the fine print on all rebates. - CompIsMyRx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Buy.com Blows. On resellerratings.com, it has >3/10. Don't buy it.
- dreamlayers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1In the past I've seen good deals on the WRT54GC, which is a bit bigger, but it has a 4-port switch and an SMA connector for an external antenna.
- raccettura, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21. It doesn't seem to support Linux firmware, at least not as of yet. So your stuck using rather limited and Linksys quality firmware, which in my experience is rather poor in quality.
2. You get what you pay for. I've seen this for $20 before. So paying full price is never the deal. You can always find it for much less. The big difference here is the Google Checkout discount. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Rebates? NTY.
- Squeebee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Never used Buy.com, but I can tell you that I have this travel router and love it.
Great for letting you sure from anywhere in your hotel room (suite hotel where the LAN is at the desk and you want to sit on the couch, etc).
Also great when traveling in a group, you plug it in, use it as a wi-fi client, one of you pays for its connection and the rest of you share it when at meeting halls, airports, etc.
And frankly, it is nice to know you are firewalled from the rest of the hotel guests.
Another benefit is that if you leave it plugged in at the hotel you don't have to re-process a login each time you return to your room. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1MIR ***** suck
- Lambda1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0You have to realize that most of the time IF someone has a good experience they don't go to a review site and say anything about it. It is only when someone is pissed off that they feel motivated enough to bitch to someone about it. I take most of those review sites with a grain of salt as there has to be good experiences with a company. If someone is saying that they went through 3 pages of reviews without a positive one, that should be a red flag that maby only people who want to complain are writing there...
- jerinjoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0$50 Creative Live! Pro Webcam for $5
(same way Google Checkout + Mail in Rebate)
http://www.buy.com/prod/Creative_Live_Cam_Notebook_Pro_Webcam_CMOS_USB/q/loc/33409/202556781.html - unclejose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Just as an update. Though I disdain Buy.com, especially since it took them 21 days to mail my router, I just now got my rebate check. Thus, though many might not fancy giving up $50 for two months, and think such artificially lowered prices are misleading; It Works. Also, the group that Buy.com used here let you check your rebate status online, so the greater transparency should imbue some of you with greater confidence in the rebate process.
- ShaneShirey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0It'd be nice if it had an audio out like the Airport Express. I'd get one for sure if it did.
- darvian, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Great deal!
- RHamel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Do not do this!
The last time I used Buy.com, and their so called rebate, I ended up with a monthly charge on my credit card from another company for an unwanted service. Buy.com shared my personal information with them. I had one devil of a time sorting it out. - justintsmith, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Thats about what I paid for my router!
By "router' I mean a brick of ***** with an antenna stuck in it. a.k.a trendnet router - Jerkpie, on 03/03/2009, -8/+2Slickdeals > *

It would help if you made your comment useful, and told us why you dont like buy.com. Any human can answer a yes or no question without even knowing the actual question. - Homerr, on 10/12/2007, -42/+3Digg is now a hot deals website? Thumbs down.
