10% of Broadband Users Eat 80% Bandwidth, P2P Not to Blame
gizmodo.com — No, p2p is no longer the single biggest traffic whore, responsible for only 20 percent of total traffic. It's streaming video, like YouTube and Hulu, which is now 50 percent of total traffic. Which explains Comcast's flip on network management and why it's a total smokescreen.

- whiteyak41, on 04/23/2008, -3/+131That's all nice and whatnot, but do you actually think Comcast cares about logic?
- WolverineBlue, on 04/23/2008, -0/+30If they need to be logical to make money, they may just tolerate it.
- KibibyteBrain, on 04/23/2008, -0/+10But they lose money on streaming video, because then they can't sell your their crashing cable box with the worst PVR software possible recording crappy compressed based on 1980s technology cable service for $100/month. To trust comcast to promote new online media would be like trusting Donald Trump to support virtual gambling.
Also, couldn't it be more than this? Could it just be that 10% of people account for 80% of time spent on the computer? - Wargasmic, on 04/23/2008, -0/+3No, they don't lol. Plenty of assbackwards people make more money than they deserve.

- kaelyiesta, on 04/23/2008, -0/+9They are indeed shortsighted. But someday this constant 'screw the customers' method is going to bite them in the ass. Seems to me this entire problem could be solved in one simple step. Listening comcast? Here it goes: FIX YOUR ***** TERMS OF SERVICE! Don't claim to sell more than you can ***** offer, dont charge people more than they ***** use, and easiest of all, simply cut off anyone that goes out of their price range consumption use. Its that easy you lying pieces of *****.
Instead they like to take the approach of offering huge amounts of access and charge a lot for that service, even though they cant come through on their end. In other words, they are being very comcastic. - Genma, on 04/23/2008, -0/+2obviously, since they stapled their lips to p2p's ass they clearly know that this information was bound to get out sooner or later. It's all a game of propaganda to them, it's what they do best and sadly most of the time it works. Times are changing though as more people get their news from sources not in their pockets, they will get what's coming to them.

- geoken, on 04/23/2008, -1/+130I wish we had ISP's with no vested interest in television. The more mature online television/online video content become (and by extension the less viable cable/sattelite tv becomes), the more these ISP will try to sabotage our ability to watch it.
- DivisibleByZero, on 04/23/2008, -1/+11Is it the ISPs or the content producers who are sabotaging it more? The ISPs do actually have an understandable reason (they've got all this TV broadcasting equipment that's becoming obsolete), but the studios are just letting an irrational fear of piracy keep them from changing to a new model.
Let's all agree to spend more time watching hulu so they'll realize that ad-supported online content DOES work,- phoomp, on 04/23/2008, -0/+6I'd watch HULU if they'd finally let their ad-supported online content be playable outside the US.
- DivisibleByZero, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2Most of the ads are geared towards the US market, so I can see why they're a bit hesitant. They seem to have a hard enough time filling the ad-space just for the US at the moment. They show the same commercial 5 times during a show.
- phoomp, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Like dropping in ads localized by IP address is difficult?
No it's more than that. It's the same reason why non-Americans can't purchase TV and movie content through iTunes, which has nothing to do with ads. It seems more like a desire to control who can see what and when. I have no problems watching ads to subsidize viewing a show and until the networks realize that I'll be visiting other sources for my online content distribution.

- Wartz, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1if you start uploading at greater than 85-90% of your upstream bandwidth, it will cut your download speed way down. for example, I can download at 900 KB/s and upload at 125 KB/s. Rant: As it is, Id say my internet works about 80%, For $14 you really can't beat the price, compared to the 60 I was paying for cable. But the reliablity and speed suck, even when I have full signal.
/Rant - Timmymna, on 04/23/2008, -4/+12110% of broadband users pay for the extra speed to make use of it, not to just sit and read emails all day
- CyberSol, on 04/23/2008, -2/+12In the TOS for cableone internet here in the west, you are paying for a privilege of extended speeds. If you abuse that privilege i.e. download more then what they allow you to during peek times they bump you down to standard speeds.
From their TOS
"Cable One provisions all customers with up to at least Standard Speeds or higher. Nearly all customers will experience Extended Speeds and remain provisioned at that level. Customers who exceed threshold limits remain at Standard speeds during the enforcement period. The enforcement period begins mid-afternoon and continues until approximately midnight. For example: A "Residential" customer getting extended speeds who consumes 1,347 MB of download bandwidth during the measurement period will automatically change provisioning to Standard Speeds until midnight of that day."
Screw you cable one, thats why I dumped your sorry ass as soon as I could.- Firehed, on 04/23/2008, -0/+18At least they're telling you what the cutoff point is, no matter how random it seems. And 1.3GB during peak hours isn't being too unreasonable, given the fact they're upfront about it.
- pyrates, on 04/23/2008, -1/+9If you use that much during that time, that averages to about 384 Kbits of continous use. That could be like watching tv or talking on skype, or downloading linux iso's for 9 hours, which some people would do. That is completely unreasonable. I paid for a certain speed. I should get that speed without the isp interfering. If the isp can't handle me doing that, then they shouldn't have sold the plan in the first place. Or they can upgrade their pipes to handle it. Either way, do not sell me something and then take it away.
- knowitman, on 04/23/2008, -0/+6Since they tell you this upfront, you are in effect paying for the speeds with an agreement that if you hit that peak, then you will be throttled. It's much different from getting cut off with some invisible peak.
You have the choice to not buy their service. That's the beauty of competition.- KMartSheriff, on 04/23/2008, -0/+3That's also the problem. There is no competition.
- Blandyman, on 04/23/2008, -0/+5Why would you download linux iso's for 9 hours EVERYDAY ?
I don't see why hitting their peak (which they actually say) and being throttled until midnight (God forbid) is really so horrible.
But I have BellSouth. Never been throttled and it just keeps getting faster and faster :)

An ISP that is upfront about its bandwidth allowances during peak hours? You mean... /rimshot - thedragon4453, on 04/24/2008, -0/+4Exactly. The really retarded thing is that they are whining and not fixing the problem. I got news for you Comcast, its only going to get worse. More and more people are using video sites, instant video rentals are becoming more and more popular, and so on. No one is just using their connection to read the ny times anymore. I mean, you guys must be living in the same world the RIAA and MPAA are, where everything is the fault of the customer, and not your inability to address the needs of the customer.
And, to add insult to injury, we've given you tax breaks so you could beef up the infrastructure (since everyone that doesn't have their head jammed completely in their ass could have seen that this internet thing is going to be big), but you've done jack ***** with it, all while raising our rates.
Internet usage is going to go up. I'd imagine that the 10% are just the more tech savvy people that are able to use all the services available. But that 10% will grow. Get the ***** over it, and start laying some fiber. We know you've got the money, we already gave it to you.- bobkingof12vs, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1see reply to the post three posts up...

- rokinroj, on 04/23/2008, -3/+33It would be interesting to see how much bandwidth goes to online gaming. Between PC games like WOW, and PS2/3, Xbox Live, etc., it must be a decent amount.

- Kyrgizion, on 04/23/2008, -1/+22Yeah you'd be pleasantly surprised, online games don't normally hog a whole lot of bandwidth at all. All that's being constantly transmitted to the server are your coordinates which are in fact fairly simple numerical values which won't take up a lot of space.
- camilos007, on 04/23/2008, -0/+19That makes sense. But its weird that often you see articles talking about how online gaming is sucking up bandwidth. Must be written by non-technical people who think that the graphics have be sent over the network each time the screen moves.

- olbap, on 04/23/2008, -8/+2So, when are "we the people" going to build our own internet? How hard can it be? Start in one city, one neighborhood and expand out from there. It can be done. I have faith. It is immoral that our access to the Internet is controlled by media companies. We need our own Internet, one that is not controlled by corporations. Who's with me?
- meruru, on 04/23/2008, -0/+17"We the people" did that, you're using it right now
- homercles337, on 04/23/2008, -1/+17"We the people" have already built their own internet. The government funded the building of the backbone with your tax dollars and the telecoms get to use it for free. Is that some ***** or is that some *****?
- gluecode, on 04/23/2008, -5/+4Since yesterday, my dsl connection is barely crawling. AT&T is unable figure out the issue yet. I am sure one of my neighbors is in that 10%.

- gluecode, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Everything is shared at the router, silly. Go back to school.
- KMartSheriff, on 04/23/2008, -0/+2That's odd. I've been on several different cable connections served by several different cable providers, all at various times of the day and I'm seeing download speeds crawling as well (legit downloads, not p2p stuff). It's only happened in the past few days.
- teh_techie, on 04/23/2008, -1/+9DSL is not shared silly... if you said cable - you might be right
- bwf93, on 04/23/2008, -1/+3Comcast has the high speed. Shouldn't matter how many people are watching cats on youtube at once.
- Firehed, on 04/23/2008, -0/+5If they're not smart enough to cache the cats to save themselves a ton of bandwidth costs, it's their own damn fault. And of course, Rick Astley.
- devinbunker, on 04/24/2008, -0/+0I don't think the problem has to do with Comcast's connections to other networks. Their last-mile connections are usually shared between ~300-400 households, all of which have to share that "high speed". Because of that, ANY sustained data transfer by a customer, even if it is to a Comcast cache or even another customer in the same neighborhood, will necessarily degrade performance for his or her neighbors.
That's why they love users that have quick bursts of activity (e.g. http) and hate users that just transfer data all day (e.g. bittorrent).
- aliguana, on 04/23/2008, -1/+55you can't blame one sector of the internet for hogging bandwidth. Plain simple truth is, 10% of people buy "unlimted" bandwidth and 24meg speed because they want to USE it, whether for p2p, video, audio, VNC, chat, running home servers etc, sometimes all at the same time. other people just check their emails twice a day. It's not the fault of the users that they are "hogging bandwidth", they are just using the services that they signed up to their ISP to use. It's like buying a car, then some garage complaining that you're driving too many miles in it - if you're a taxi driver that's what you bought it for!
These ISPs and telcos need to get their act together, stop whinging about us using services we're paying for, and start fattening the pipes and upgrading the network.- BoneheadFarker, on 04/23/2008, -0/+7If you lease a car, the dealer can complain that you are putting too many miles on it. Though at least they tell you up front how many miles you're allowed, unlike ISPs who tell you it's unlimited when you sign up but don't tell you what their definition of "unlimited" is...
- aliguana, on 04/23/2008, -2/+1ok, it was a crap metaphor, but you got my point :)
- stealth210, on 04/23/2008, -6/+1Playing devils advocate here. Really, it's more like leasing a car since you are really just leasing bandwidth. With car leases there is usually a mileage limit. So, you could buy a fast car, but if you exceed the mileage limit... well you see where I'm going with this.
Not that I agree and I do all of the above things you mentioned with my Comcast "unlimited" bandwidth, but just thought I'd throw that in. That said, the mileage limit should be in the contract and the bandwidth should not be called unlimited.- tomd123, on 04/23/2008, -0/+3The only difference is that they tell you what the mileage limit is on the leased car. On the internet contract, they don't mention a thing. Tell me the connection there... If it's not on paper, its not legal.
- darkamster07, on 04/23/2008, -0/+3no, they should just upgrade thier network like they should have done 10 years ago so that all thier lies will be true, i want unlimited
- BoneheadFarker, on 04/23/2008, -0/+7If you lease a car, the dealer can complain that you are putting too many miles on it. - x2wenty4x, on 04/23/2008, -0/+29Netflix instant watch sucks up about 800 MB per 1 1/2 hr movie, which can add up quickly.
- homercles337, on 04/23/2008, -0/+24I can also imagine that a bulk of that http traffic is due to those ***** flash ads that are now videos. Why cant comcast take the fight of defeating net neutrality to these idiots?
- hifiDesign, on 04/23/2008, -0/+10Not to mention the assloads of spam email (which from what I understand account for the vast majority of internet traffic) and god knows what from zombie PCs... I mean, WTH are these numbers coming from really?
- bdbr, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1Mail doesn't use HTTP as a transport. Sure, there are web front-ends, but I doubt people are reading through all their spam.
- krische, on 04/23/2008, -0/+5The whole email message is delivered to the server. Even if the person doesn't read it. So the traffic is still there.
- hifiDesign, on 04/23/2008, -0/+2Not being sarcastic at all here, but don't they rely on the same tubes for data transmission — with spammers constantly firing off emails for knockoff watches and male enhancement, coupled with vast networks of zombie PCs doing what they do (probably firing off watch and Viagra spam), doesn't that impact throughput for other types of information?
- rhino369, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1All the spam i get all year doesn't equal one episode of TV I download.

- wbeavis, on 04/23/2008, -0/+3This principle of a small group utilizing the most from a resource is true all over the place. Less than 10% of my users use up over 80% of the network storage. So what else is new?
- cliffr39, on 04/23/2008, -1/+4Don't forget all those damned ads that they cram down our throats all over pages nowadays - not only the images, but stupid ass video commercials embedded into the page - that add up on usage.

- bshock, on 04/23/2008, -0/+20Dealing with Comcast isn't difficult.
1) Gather the names of major Comcast executives, shareholders, and their family members.
2) Connect addresses with the names (zabasearch.com or some other service will probably do)
3) Mail them something that expresses your personal feelings about their unpleasant behavior.

- anonydigg, on 04/23/2008, -0/+5That's actually great news. They are subsidizing our downloads. If it wasn't for them, we'd have to pay dedicated prices for access. Do your own research and you will find that it is not cheap, even when bought in bulk from Tier1 providers.
- scott12087, on 04/23/2008, -0/+3Now they'll just start throttling streaming video traffic.
- telefunkin, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1like youtube needs more buffer time
- timlump, on 04/23/2008, -0/+6Only like 20/30 % of the worlds Internet infrastruture's bandwidth is in use, and as far as I know that includes telephones, so ***** them, if they dont like people wasting bandwidth, then they should rent some more, people pay enough for a ***** service.
- alexander13, on 04/23/2008, -0/+4I have read that phone companies have hard costs of anywhere between $.00004-$.0001 per minute so they make plenty of money yet still charge outrageous cell phone fees and now are wanting to do the same for internet. Can't fault 'em for wanting to increase their profits but we can fight back and tell 'em to suck it and 'leave our internet alone'.
- megablue, on 04/23/2008, -0/+2Internet enabled applications are using more and more bandwidth. ISPs will throttle everything soon.
- dannybuoyuk, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1The top 10% of the population probably own 80% of the wealth in the world too (guestimate).
I don't see the government scrambling to address this inbalance though... - rafter, on 04/23/2008, -0/+9For what we pay, maybe they should upgrade there systems and lines so that there isnt a bandwidth problem... Oh wait, but then you can't report your $million profits
- Thorpe, on 04/23/2008, -0/+2The Internet is evolving. If ISPs can't cope with the increasing bandwidth being used, then they need to do something about it (and I don't mean throttle speeds or charge by the byte). Not just P2P, websites like YouTube but also places like Xbox LIVE Marketplace are the sort of things some people will use on a regular basis.

- juusux, on 04/23/2008, -0/+4companies need to stop being greedy, and fork out the money to get faster backbones and faster connections. they're just putting off the inevitable, and avoiding progress.
- altjeringa, on 04/23/2008, -0/+2Actually there is not reason to regulate bandwidth at all. We tax payers already gave telcos and service providers money to run enough pipe to bring a 40 meg circut to every house in the country. Simply put, we paid for 40 meg circuts, if access providers claim they don't have sufficient bandwidth to support traffic and hence have to shape user traffic, they are simultaneously admitting the they stole 200 million dollars from the US government. This is all bu775|-|1t!
- laserblazer, on 04/23/2008, -0/+3Stealing money from U.S. taxpayers is quite the cottage industry these days - except by cottage I mean yacht, mansion and factory.
