- scottauth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26 Not really pushing the envelope...no Flux Capacitor in any of these vehicles.
- thefirelane, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15The Bugatti is truely the greatest car ever made. If anyone has seen the Top Gear episode on it, they'll remember some other fun facts:
-1 million to buy 4 million to build (they loose money because it is just meant to be a tech demo)
-Each indicator swtich (those things coming off the steering wheel) costs $4,500
-In a 0-200 mph race between it an a SLR, it can wait until the other car gets to 150mph BEFORE STARTING, and it will still win.
-At top speed, it drains it gas tank in 12 minutes. - jo42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Top Gear is a great show. And yes, the Veyron is just bloody amazing. Got to check the lottery numbers tonite - might be rich or not..
- beni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10That and the 150mph speed limiter...
- JSolo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Unfortunately, in the case of the Shelby Mustang, all that power does not necessarily translate into crazy performance. The car is a bit too heavy for it's britches and is beaten by the 400hp Corvette C6 in most speed benchmarks.
- Ibox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5gas guzzler huh, that Jetta Diesel get's better gas milage than any of the Hybrids.
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I like Top Gear too, great show.
Just wondering why the Koenigsegg CCR is on there, the new CCX is out, that is even faster than the CCR. With the rear spoiler, it gets really close to the Veyron in terms of top speed. My personal taste goes to the CCX, damn it's beautiful, and those doors... /drools
Oh yeah, who's on the leaderboard of the test track on Top Gear? Oh yeah, it's the CCX w/ rear spoiler. Wonder why they haven't tested the Veyron on the test track, I can't wait for the lap time... - IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I want paddle shifters damnit! Where's the McLaren?
- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"It looks kinda gay though."
So it suits you then. Thanks for letting us know. :-|
insensitive clod - chadwn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't want to start a huge argument but as far as dollar to dollar performance the WRX STI or the Lancer Evolution would have to be crowned champs. 350z is the same price but not nearly as quick or agile, granted it looks a hell of a lot better. Also I think these are all new cars that aren't out already.
- djblast, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4thats the bugatti veyron if anyone didnt know which one he was talking about (even thought theres only 1 that does all that)
- orenthal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2glad to see the diesels getting some love. i still cant figure out why more people aren't driving them. i go 600+ miles a tank in my jetta TDI.
- farhadG55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3oooh, safety and fuel consumption..cool!!
- TKDEE, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Hahaha I can see it now, you click next and see:
"Cool car number 4
BTTF Model Delorian
Cool Feature: Time Travel
Price: Not yet announced
Just make sure you don't damage your flux capacitor, and have stored up at least 1.21 gigawatts and you can be time traveling in no time. Just make sure you don't allow your own mother to fall in love with you wiping yourself out of existence in the process. You may not win any races from 0-100 but you only need to get to 88 anyway and you can get to the finish line before you started." - chatwithaninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed. There was a law just passed recently requiring cleaner diesel fuels to be produced. That in conjunction with all the latest diesel tech should turn around the diesel consumption in the US. I'm just waiting for ford to make the damn bronco turbo diesel they had on show recently. I'll be first in line for that bad boy.
- iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4QUOTE Unfortunately, in the case of the Shelby Mustang, all that power does not necessarily translate into crazy performance. The car is a bit too heavy for it's britches and is beaten by the 400hp Corvette C6 in most speed benchmarks. UNQUOTE
The Shelby is a four seater, the Corvette is a two seater, two totally different animals, so I don't get your point?
The 500HP Shelby (100 HP over) puts the Shelby into similar weight/power ratios than the 400HP C6 Vette, but you don't buy a Shelby Mustang to "beat" a C6 Vette, you buy it for much better reasons. - thefirelane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Cmain
You're probably either thinking of its variable timing or the spoiler which you have to lower to reach top speed - drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Doesnt the Jetta TDi get better gas mileage than the prius?
If so, it is the most efficient car on the road and the safest in its class, and is still several thousand dollars cheaper than a prius.
I wanna see some diesel hybrids though. - thefirelane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sorry, not SLR, I meant McLaren F1 :)
- Bensch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You think you're not a gas guzzler? I'll stick with my bicycle.
- Goatman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It only drains the tank in 11 mins at top speed. For all you know it's got a really small tank... and it is a V16 with 4 turbos, making 1000 hp....
Lets see a hack like H Ford come up with that. - sofong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll wait for the new common rail diesel engine in the 2008 Jetta TDI and some tuner parts. Pleasure to drive, safe and thrifty.
- carguy84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I saw that too. But what's even crazier is leaving off the new S Class. Now THAT has some cool features.
But I'm impressed they mentioned the Lexus. - dcipjr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was let down by this article. I thought this was going to be a bunch of cars that have wow-that's-cool features, like the ability to park themselves. I guess you could consider "fuel" or "performance" to be an awesome feature, but that's not what came to mind for me when I read the title of the article.
Am I the only one? - Sukino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wish cars in Europe were so cheap.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the veyron actually comes with a W12 and the W16 is an optional upgrade so i think they still got it right, sorta.
- weiran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Power isn't just about how good the power to weight ratio is. The Veyron gets the power down VERY well, and has parts that last. You'd be lucky to go 5000miles in that without needing a big service.
- christoscamaro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did anyone else notice that the Bugatti Veyron's description says "mating of two six cylinder motors".
Um, 6+6 doesn't = 16. Do'h! I recall hearing it has a W16. At least they got the 4 turbochargers part right. - 3adkied, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Obviously I can't verify it from personal experience, but it seems reasonable. The biggest factors are weight, aerodynamics, and engine size. This has all three with only 1000 lbs, presumably great aerodynamics, and only a 2.4L engine. Granted, the engine can make a ton of HP, but the potential HP isn't that important when figuring highway mileage. At 1/3 the weight of a normal car, and a sleek shape, it takes less HP to keep it at a steady speed on the highway than most cars.
Doesn't this seem like a much more fun way to save the environment than a 3500 lb. electric car that has awful performance and gets similar mpg? - EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2In reply to tsupersonic
They did test the new CCX http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koenigsegg_CCX (info at the bottom)
Dont hold me to this, but I think it was the first episode of the 8th season (it may have been the second...cant remember). Because it has no spoiler for downforce, it didnt perform as well. In fact the Stig wrecked in it that was fun to watch...and slightly painful... :-P
Anyway Koenigsegg said "lets slap a spoiler on and see how it does" and Top Gear is going to redo it later. - Cmain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You cannot reach the top speed on the road unless you know what you are doing. The car requires a computer/software that you plug in and make adjustments. If I remember correctly the car adjusts itself when it gets to a certain speed so that it can increase speed faster. Truly an amazing piece of engineering.
- EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ tsupersonic
Your completly right. I read your statement as a question, I apologize. I am afraid that I haven't had a chance to watch most of the new eps yet, so thanks for giving me a heads up on which ones to watch first! :-D - anti-net, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think the Ariel Atom (don't know it? google it!) should be on that list. amazing car. simple but amazing.
- tomciob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i just want to clarify what paddle shifters are since most OEMs don't know (lexus)
sequential has a clutch, except that the computer controls it.
automatics with paddle shifters are AUTOMATICS ! - tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@EdLesMann:
Yeah, I know they tested the CCX on the 1st episode w/o the rear spoiler. The stig went off the road, he didn't have the grip... They also got the CCX from Koenigsegg w/ rear spoiler on the 4th episode (Season 8) , I think it was. It set a new lap record, and I think you read my post wrong, but that's alright :)
"Oh yeah, who's on the leaderboard of the test track on Top Gear? Oh yeah, it's the CCX w/ rear spoiler. " - To0n1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You are by no means the only one.
But do keep in mind that this is Business Week, which in my experience, equates to a neck and neck tie with The Economist as the "Newsweek" for people in a slightly higher income/education bracket (I personally subscribe to the Economist as a way of studying for the Foreign Service Entrance Exam, but that's just me). In a sense, it's a fluff piece. I'd expect a better written article on the "wow-that's-cool" features from Road & Track or Car and Driver, but that immediately doesn't have the same cross over appeal to major business types (you think a guy in sales is going to understand an article that has more in depth in fuel cell technology?)
I think it's a good jumping off point to check out the auto-zines that would have more information about these features, and would have relating articles on more up and coming features. - legopacific, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Am I the only one who thinks it's nuts to be bothering with a hybrid SUV? If you really have to haul that much crap around with you all the time, then sure use a truck/SUV. But for most miles are driven with only one passenger and no gear. Get a Honda Civic (no hybrid), pull the wheel off the bike and put it in the trunk and you'll have better performance, save $8k and get better mileage.
- Yamanba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The McLaren went out with crystal pepsi, its just vanity.
- mydiggname, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Personally, I'm partial to the Ariel Atom: http://www.arielmotor.co.uk/04/frames.htm
- gsoftcomputers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2where is the s550????
- aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1count again, it's 10 cars. the first slide is an introduction slide.
many of these cars have overlapping features. so it's kind fo bias. - sunilvarma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this article is blogged here - http://sunilvarma.com/wp/automobiles/cool-cars-with-awesome-features/
- tiptone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1chadwn: Definitely got it right on that one. I drive a 2000 Mustang GT with a few mild upgrades, not a monster but certainly no slouch. It will, and has, run all over multiple 350zs. Two weeks ago on the way to work (long highway stretch) a WRX STI ran dead even with me from ~70 to 100mph then actually started pulling on me. Not to shabby at all for a car with 4 doors that you can actually put 4 adults in.
- Goatman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"The 500HP Shelby (100 HP over) puts the Shelby into similar weight/power ratios than the 400HP C6 Vette, but you don't buy a Shelby Mustang to "beat" a C6 Vette, you buy it for much better reasons."
You want a slower, unrefined brute that requires a Supercharger to make power?? Versus a NA Corvette that even gets decent gas mileage. I would prefer the vette.
Also... the Mustang is a Pony car, not a muscle car. The Charger and GTO are not it's competitors they're Muscle Cars. One of the reasons the Mustang is selling so well is there really isn't anyone else for competition.
Also, the 350Z is a overrated, heavy and slow piece of crap that should burn.... - chatwithaninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1number of seats doesn't matter? yeah it does. Apples to Apples, my friend. The corvette is a sports car (2 seats, 2 doors), and the mustang is a muscle car (4 seats and 2 doors). Sport Sedans are right out!
The corvette competes with the viper and the GT, while the mustang competes with the GTO and charger. Muscle vs. Muscle, and Sports vs. Sports. The reasoning behind this is that people are either in the market for back seats or they aren't... - Jerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They really need to get writers that know something about cars to write their car articles. FTA:
The Veyron's factory figures are enough to make even the mildest car fan drool: 1,001 horses, 922 foot-pounds of torque, 16 cylinder engine -- the product of a Frankenstein-esque mating of two six cylinder motors and four turbochargers.
Apparently, they're using the new car math. - Ibox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ chadwn
did you see the top gear episode with the EVO9, hopped up by ( some british company ). they took a corner with it and picked up the left front tire, and didn't hardly squeek a tire. - chatwithaninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have to agree with chadwn, the Evolution and the STI beat it pretty badly. The 350z is still a cool car in its own right though... Lucky for me I'm in a wrx... :D
- rkauto1, on 10/18/2007, -0/+0Some of those cars just look way out there.
