- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11i have an article for them: stop making blogs for no reason.
- Biskino, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Heavy on the fluff, light on the actionable substance. Here's a tip from someone who makes a tidy living writing online ad copy, emails and loads of other lovely marketing bumph I know you all enjoy so much.
If you really enjoy writing for others and want to make money at it then blogging probably isn't the best way. Blogging for dollars is the Amway for the wanna-be literati set. From what I can see there are two ways to do it, neither of which have much to do with the formulaic approach to writing the author advocates...
1. Deliver really useful/insightful/exclusive information. Look at the most popular and influential blogs out there - what makes them stand out is the highly unique (and desireable) information they deliver. These guys aren't sweating over style or writing the oh-so-perfect headline, they're pounding the pavement, making contacts and shifting through research to find content that their readers want.
or
2. Spam the f*ck out of social networks like digg. This is what 99% of bloggers that make money do. If the idea of scraping a living by being a pest appeals to you then blogging for $$ should really make your eyes light up. - brettbum, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I noticed that the author followed their own advice in this article. The content was very scannable. :)
- vhold, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3A list of 10 articles, 5 of which advertise they are lists themselves. So it sounds like the real key is to just make lots of lists.
- ladyarcher85, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7Some people just blog because they to have space to get rid of the things cluttering their mind.
They don't give a damn if people would read them or not.
If people read their work and agree then its good if others don't then that is fine also. - JernejL, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2WHO BROKE THE BLOCK USER BUTTON?!?
- wattznext, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2it's a good thing "at least once" is part of the title.. before i got to the end of said title, i was unsure as to what the minimum amount of times i would need to read this article was.
- h0dg3s, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I agree about the grammar, but remember their target audience is going to be just as dumb as they are and won't really care.
- h0dg3s, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Here's a website all bloggers should see.
http://www.nobodyreadsyourstupidblog.com/ - fuze44, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2What should have been #1 on that list is "Learn to spell and use correct grammar." That is the starting point for any type of writing. To disagree is to equate finger painting with master artists.
It does matter if one knows the difference between lose and loose, between your and you're, etc etc. One may be able to communicate one's message without said knowledge, but one looks illiterate doing so. Besides, if communicating one's message in any manner one wishes suffices, the English language would have never been developed to the extent that it has. We'd simply grunt and bang on rocks. - Milamber, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Really? Nothing better to do with your life than to ruin other peoples' pleasure? Man, I almost feel sorry for you. I don't really care about Harry Potter but even I think that this is stupid, childish and nothing but offensive for people who are fans of the books.
Grow up. - jeston13, on 10/26/2007, -0/+1seemingly that would be a key digg is proof of that
- h0dg3s, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It appears we are like-minded. People digg us down for this. The simple-minded majority is ruining our internet and we need to do something about it.
- sexybobo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1this is cool and all but i think xkcd needs to redo it. who ever made this didn't spend enough time on it. (having several categories labeled misc. come on) xkcd would put alot more thought in to it and make it alot better. kinda like the map of the internet.http://xkcd.com/c256.html
- spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I agree with this 100%. The beauty of blogging and the internet is that you're free to publish whatever you want. If you're blogging for money or a corporation it's important to stick to readability and usability guidelines, but if you're doing it for fun then don't let structure stifle your creativity.
For instance, in addition to my regular blog I just started a new blog which I'll be using in an unconventional fashion as a content management system. I'll be using it to host music and organize it into categories. Check it out at http://mixtapes.demodulated.com if you like. No ads, no fees, no donations, not for profit - just giving away copies of my old rave tapes at my expense. - spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1What's your URL?
- nobody98, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2burried as lame.
- h0dg3s, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I burred it as spam
- quigles3000, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I've noticed people on Digg complaining a lot about "pointless blogs that nobody reads". Well, I have a blog (psst - www.QuigSpot.com ), and I post on it less for other people than I do for myself. It's just something to have fun with, and I'm pretty sure that's the mindset many other bloggers have as well.
So what's the big deal? Even if the blog sucks, it's not hurting anybody. - kdehead, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2when submitting to digg and its a picture , always use "[pic]" in the digg title.
- ItsTheSun, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2blogging is the death of the internet and news as we know it.. just stop please
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2too much hardcoding rules is one way ticket to failure.
stop using rules so much .start learning sixth sense. it sounds like a joke but it's true. the best works are done by a combination of logic but also what sounds right, what seems right. - spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3I thought this killer article was killer.
- JDRay, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0I would have liked to see something about generating ad revenue. I don't want to put massive display ads in my blog, but I sure wouldn't mind getting a few dollars every time I reached a thousand hits based on displaying a small banner ad. I looked into it once, and all the ad providers I found required proof that you have thousands of hits a day before they'll talk to you. Why would that matter? If I get 10 hits a day, that's still 10 ads they're displaying, right?
Okay, shameless plug: http://somethingstirring.blogspot.com. I rarely add content, but try to make what I do put up there worth reading. - forthamiltonhs, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0I found the list of articles helpful for a newbie blogger.
- Lucky7Star, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0I've already found some very useful along with some deja vu moments type moment... Like "I really should already know this!" Maybe I did, and just forgot:)
- lauch, on 10/26/2007, -3/+1I'd like to know, as a blogger, how many "10 things every blogger should know" articles I need to read?? It seems that every day, there are "10 things every blogger should know", or "10 design tips every web designer needs to learn" or "15 things that you must do to your blog, so that you don't spontaneously combust and your wife runs away with a stripper and your car breaks down on a deserted road and your house is flooded and nobody reads your blog because you're a loser"
Really, if you're a blogger, there are only a few things to remember:
1. Keep it SIMPLE
2. If you don't have anything to write about, it doesn't matter what you do to your blog, NOBODY WILL READ IT.
3. Keep it witty, even if you have things to write about, nobody will read something that makes them fall asleep.
4. Finally, network....tell your friends. If they like it...they'll suggest it to their friends..and so on and so forth. But again, if you don't have the first three, networking can't resurrect your site. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1getting paid to blog? wow, what a concept!
- latest, on 10/11/2007, -4/+0Thanks kittyroy. Good one
