- nullcodes, on 04/27/2009, -11/+875At least the general public doesn't get to decide important things like who becomes president.
- Arsenard, on 04/26/2009, -19/+720The dummy does not know that the moon has its own gravity? May the Lord save us from such as he!!!
- temujin2012, on 04/26/2009, -4/+629The ignorance is painful.
- aralls, on 04/27/2009, -6/+379A well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the center of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy. At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: "What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise." The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, "What is the tortoise standing on?" "You're very clever, young man, very clever," said the old lady. "But it's turtles all the way down!"
From Wikipedia's "Turtles all the way down." - TrouserJazz, on 04/26/2009, -4/+352I thought it was common knowledge that on the moon you weigh x% of what you weigh on earth (20%?). They still teach that in schools right?
- iamaelephant, on 04/27/2009, -16/+344America. ***** yeah.
- lewystud, on 04/27/2009, -13/+330even dumber - about 20% Americans have doubts we ever went to the moon
- fury420, on 04/26/2009, -4/+286"The big popular choice of this group was (c)...33% chose heavy boots, followed closely by safety ropes at 27%."
so, 7% of his physics class believed that the apollo astronauts were held down to the moon by safety ropes rather than by gravity? damn, so much for the education system - chupavacas, on 04/27/2009, -8/+278Pens float away here on Earth too, that's why I can never find one.
- S1ngular1ty1, on 04/27/2009, -4/+207Considering they actually did an experiment on the moon showing how a feather and a hammer fall at the same velocity with the lack of air resistance, I would tend to say the moon has gravity and that is why the astronauts didn't float off of it.
- Altair27, on 04/27/2009, -14/+210Thank God for Science.
- S1ngular1ty1, on 04/27/2009, -14/+207Oh wait...
- dingedarmor, on 04/27/2009, -5/+183Ah, nothing like living in the new dark ages.
- justok, on 04/27/2009, -12/+1891/6 not quite 20%, but close enough for govt work, unless you're a rocket scientist with NASA, then you'd problem mess it up by converting to different units.
- DouglasQ, on 04/27/2009, -10/+175Of course, in reality they faked the moon landing because the boots were to heavy to send into space.
- dsmx, on 04/27/2009, -3/+149No the moon moves to the pen.
- WIT415, on 04/27/2009, -7/+138They don't, the electoral college does
- sepelester, on 04/26/2009, -2/+133Most of us don't _care_ if an article or post is on digg later. We're here because we like the basic design of the site, the recommendation engine, and the community. Why do you even come back here? Only to tell us that we suck?
- Zera, on 04/27/2009, -9/+134For the first time in my life this week, I met someone younger than 60 who did not know who Charles Darwin was, nor the general definition of Evolution. He is 25, with a Construction Engineering Degree from Kansas State, did not have any Chem or Biology in college, and wen to a private religious (surprise surprise) high school.
I was absolutely shocked, and the importance of good science classes really struck home to me. It's hard to put a real impact to things like this story, or Texas voting to add "Intelligent Design" into biology class, but when you actually meet someone who is young, smart, and accomplished who doesn't know these basic things, I have to admit it is a very uneasy and disappointing thing. He was interested, and I have him a 30 minute explanation about how evolution works, and how Darwin came to propose it, and he was receptive, but WTF. Really, how can High Schools and Colleges be failing students so badly.
It's very disappointing. - Hoogie7Dowser, on 04/27/2009, -9/+121I can has gravity?
- chadsexingtime, on 04/27/2009, -2/+111You're the best in the world
Brace yourself cause there's no gravity.
You're in the ***** space olympics - nem0, on 04/27/2009, -0/+94Here's the video clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5C5_dOEyAfk
- walshgopher, on 04/27/2009, -0/+87They had this neat setup in the Ontario science center last September. The did an exhibit about mars. In order to give you an idea of what its like to walk on mars they put you in a harness attached to a frame. You stood on a scale which weighed you and then the harness lifted you up until you were only 38% your original weight. Then you got to bounce around on a cushy runway until you wanted to leave. Which was pretty quickly because the harness effectively redistributes 62% of your weight to your crotch. My boyfriend didn't last a minute.
- NMed04, on 04/27/2009, -5/+91Please use proper grammar when calling someone "dumb."
- bguven, on 04/27/2009, -2/+85It's the terrorists, they make the pen float off.
- convergent, on 04/27/2009, -39/+121I'm pretty sure that's not the case.
But hey who am I kidding any bash against religion will be dugg up here. - Wrake, on 04/27/2009, -1/+78I thought the plate rested upon four elephants riding on a turtle.
- CrazedLeper, on 04/27/2009, -30/+107Because they didn't really go.
- abanana, on 04/27/2009, -1/+77I once asked ten kids what language they spoke in England, 3 said American...
What's scary is i learned that the moon has its' own gravity, about 1/6 of Earths, from freaking cartoons when i was like 9 years old. The simpsons had an episode where Lisa watched a film strip about it... - FDDIcent, on 04/27/2009, -0/+73I think that level of ignorance/stupidity would cause me to go silent from shock. I'm assuming that's what happened to that guy.
- xrv1ck, on 04/27/2009, -2/+74except for the fact that the moon's gravity is weaker than the earth's.
FAIL. - AlienMushroom, on 04/27/2009, -5/+75The pen would just float toward Earth, wouldn't it? /s X-D
- votewhig, on 04/27/2009, -3/+73I'd like to know of this magical time in history when everybody was literate and enlightened.
We just have more sophisticated forms of stupidity now! - alpha88, on 04/27/2009, -3/+72Actually.. everything has gravity, just often the amount of gravity is negligible.
- hummstheword, on 04/27/2009, -3/+72Thats embarrassing.
- inactive, on 04/27/2009, -5/+71we obviously didn't go to the moon. do you know much gasoline it would take? the MPGs are terrible for american transportation. the moon is at least 10,000 miles away. that would be over 50,000 million gallons of gasoline just to take you there, there are no refueling stations there. how would they get back? none of it makes any sense
- brycehebert, on 05/03/2009, -1/+66That teacher's head would explode if he saw this:

- S1ngular1ty1, on 04/27/2009, -4/+67And the Lord said "Let there be Gravity" and it was Heavy.
- Mothrog, on 04/27/2009, -3/+64"I decided to settle this question once and for all. Therefore, I put two multiple choice questions on my Physics 111 test..."
Fail. - BlackJackJester, on 04/27/2009, -20/+80Obviously the moon is outside of god's embrace. His muscly arms are what keep us stuck to this planet!
- nullvector, on 04/27/2009, -24/+83Sadly, most of the kids in High School today would say.... "What's a moon?"
Either that, or they'd say "WTF does that say, I can't read it"
Our education system sucks....because when a kid fails, or is an idiot, or is just plain stupid, we give them a smile and say "but you're special!", instead of hitting them over the head with a book. - hagerman, on 04/27/2009, -6/+64On reddit's homepage now:

Just saying... - arnmsctt, on 04/27/2009, -0/+57I hope Electoral College has smarter TAs than the University of Wisconsin.
