- RapidEye, on 01/08/2009, -0/+9When I first read the headline, I assumed this was just another pass at the cosmic microwave background radiation done by WMAP and COBE. It wasn't until I clicked through that I found out it is a new phenomena and not reacquiring the CMB. I'm looking forward to finding out what mystery we have just stumbled on to.
- noahhoward, on 01/08/2009, -2/+11You mean after all this time there are STILL people who don't know how Digg works?
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -1/+9Somebody got out of the wrong side of Jupiter
/You see what I did there... ***** brilliant. No doubt. - noahhoward, on 01/08/2009, -3/+11… … … hmm… just static, he must not have anything useful to contribute.
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -1/+8I get it. Radio, 'first stars.' That has, like, multiple meanings.
- andytronic, on 03/25/2009, -2/+9Snotty sarcastic retort.
- Tonelico, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6yeah I was about to comment, "isn't this just the CMB radiation story?" But you're right, it's something entirely different. Similar concept, but of course radiowaves and microwaves have fairly different frequencies. I wonder what will come of this?
- L0NER, on 01/08/2009, -4/+10The universe killed the radio star
- whitehatlurker, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6TFA says "Dust grows over time as stars manufacture heavy elements called metals, like carbon, silicon and oxygen, that make up dust and then spit them out into space."
I had thought that C, Si, and O were not metals. Metals would be like iron, lithium, sodium, etc. - Ozzsanity, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6"He said in the cosmos is a single sonic sound
That is vibrating constantly
And if we could grip and hold on to the note
We would see our minds were free...oh they're free"
Dreamer Deceiver, Judas Priest - MikeSD34, on 01/08/2009, -3/+7Anal retentive comment nitpicking prior commenters time estimate
- tekism, on 01/08/2009, -3/+6someone call jodie foster quick!
- RapidEye, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3No, for astronomers, "Metals" are anything heavier than Helium.
Don't ask why, its just the venacular they have used for decades. - hippykiller, on 01/08/2009, -1/+4Comment about how all of you are fags.
- pln2bz, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2So, the universe sounds like plasma spiraling through coiled magnetic fields? Within the Electric Universe paradigm, the CMB is a thick fabric of locally-generated cosmic fog that's the byproduct of charged particles traveling through coiled magnetic fields. As noticed in this new finding, the spiraling charged particles would not necessarily generate any infrared heat. That's because plasma can conduct electricity in a "dark mode".without releasing any light. We see this behavior in the laboratory. If astrophysicists would consider this alternative paradigm, they might find new ways for interpreting the CMB that are a better fit to our observations.
- bstockwell, on 01/08/2009, -1/+3You lump Kenny G and Pink Floyd into the same genre?
So, by the same trian of thought, Muddy Waters is punk. - johnomaz, on 01/08/2009, -1/+3***** AWESOME.
- AddiKT1ve, on 01/08/2009, -1/+3Dugg for “Early black holes are generally cool!”
- Thousand, on 01/08/2009, -2/+4As a massive, interstellar-dwelling, planet-devouring cosmo-snake, I say that the world has way too many problems going on right here at home to be worried about a little hissing noise from the other side of the universe. Please, everyone, move along and forget what you think you've heard.
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -1/+3Grammer Nazi meaningless contortion away from the original comment
<whinge> You didn't start your sentence with a capital letter </whinge> - noahhoward, on 01/08/2009, -1/+3In my defence, he did make me in his image.
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -1/+3Do people really still say "really?" to emphasize how unfathomably incredulous they are?
- dafragsta, on 01/08/2009, -1/+3I think that she's learned to call a poet instead.
- diskit, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1"Do people really..."
Gotcha! - inactive, on 01/08/2009, -2/+3The black-body cavity may be thought of as containing a gas of photons.

- esoxLucius4, on 01/08/2009, -0/+1Interesting point, crackerjack. But it seams to me that scientists have been doing things in the same manner for some time now. So why become astronomer in the first place?
- Testiculese, on 01/08/2009, -2/+3Damnit, I was trying to get a comment in before the religious morons showed up...
- evilregis, on 01/08/2009, -2/+3He's a very poor communicator.
- RCourtney, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1Thank you for changing professions. Go earn your money and leave enlightenment to people who at least try to appreciate its significance.
- 5xSTUN, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1Make me!

How exciting! And new! - LinMorel, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1I liked that last comment. Would be great if folks collaborated.

- 5xSTUN, on 01/08/2009, -7/+6Wow, the very first stars, six thousand years ago. I wonder which one is Jesus.
