- Tabou, on 02/23/2008, -11/+175According to the BBC, launch and operation of the satellite is estimated at US$480m. We spend 4 times that amount each week in Iraq. Sorry, I had to make that comparison.
- likwidfuzion, on 02/23/2008, -0/+114100 Mbps is Asia's dial-up.
- evilbunnys2, on 02/23/2008, -0/+95Don't they already have 100+ mbps fiber optic for $30/month?
- Feep, on 02/23/2008, -0/+86I love you, Japan.
- inactive, on 02/23/2008, -1/+84Super Giga High-Ultra Speed Lucky Internet from Japanese Saterrite! Buy now!
- inactive, on 02/23/2008, -0/+58So lets get this straight, in the usa, they try every trick possible to limit bandwidth but in japan they just keep speeding things up? humm
- danielplainview, on 02/23/2008, -3/+56The Japanese, kicking your ass since the bomb dropped.
- MajorOutage, on 02/23/2008, -0/+50Pings to the moon and back...almost literally...
- robotosaurus, on 02/23/2008, -3/+39Japan rove you rong time.
- inactive, on 02/23/2008, -2/+34Porn for the masses
- crinzema, on 02/23/2008, -2/+34Japanese's people are aliens! They have alien technology!
- TobiasParker, on 02/23/2008, -2/+32So this is what the NAVY was practicing for last week...
- Jaliyl, on 02/23/2008, -0/+30I think so, and not just japan, other Asian countries too. And where I live we don't even have FIOS yet
- csb92376, on 02/23/2008, -1/+29The problem with satellite internet is latency ... speed is almost irrelevant, except for capacity sake. Latency is a physical problem due to the distance from the earth -- signal is beamed up to the satellite, then back down to a ground station ... then the response is sent back up and down again to your computer. So for each packet, that's 4 hops between earth and geostationary orbit. Latency. So yeah, it might be 1.2 gigabits, but the ping times are going to suck.
- robotosaurus, on 02/23/2008, -0/+25YOU WANT MIRRION KBPS
- DocumentEd, on 02/23/2008, -0/+22Japan gets it.
- fkr3, on 02/23/2008, -5/+26I don't think most of digg's users could get permission from their mommies to go to your house.
- Celeron, on 02/23/2008, -0/+19That explains everything now. Especially, with their hentai porno having alien tentacles and all.
- inactive, on 02/23/2008, -2/+20I'm sorry, "diggiot" is not a word.
- MaskedSlacker, on 02/23/2008, -0/+16It would be terrible. Satellite is the WORST form of broadband.
- Tanktunker, on 02/23/2008, -0/+14It says gigabyes, that's 8 times as much, but yeah, you can't really use it for VOIP, IPTV or online games.
Still good for warez though, Megaupload and Rapidshare are going to have to upgrade their servers. - Gojirra, on 02/23/2008, -1/+15Well blowing things up makes the internet faster too, right?
- JinnRikki, on 02/23/2008, -1/+14Yep, since they don't have to pay for all that defense crap (you're welcome Japan).
- EtherGnat, on 02/23/2008, -1/+14Believe it or not some people don't care about online gaming.
- robotosaurus, on 02/23/2008, -0/+13Dugg for reference.
- Tanktunker, on 02/23/2008, -0/+13Well when you have ground based internets you need expensive equipment at each end of the cable, and it's much cheaper to just ***** your customers than buy more equipment.
- MaskedSlacker, on 02/23/2008, -0/+13Its terrible. I hate my satellite internet. The 35,000 mile signal path creates obscene latency. Further, satellite companies impose invisbile data ceilings, if you exceed 200 MB in a day, then until midnight you no longer have internet.
- fuckingusername, on 02/23/2008, -2/+14 to funny my parents live in USA and they don't have cable or DSL offered due to their location,
but Bush is destroying and then rebuilding Iraq with their tax dollars... - cidman2001, on 02/23/2008, -0/+12This just highlights how bad we are getting screwed with high priced, crappy speed service here in the US....didn't we invent the internet?
- drizzlelicious, on 02/23/2008, -1/+13Tell that to China
- robotosaurus, on 02/23/2008, -0/+11Japanese's people?
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 02/23/2008, -1/+12You should read the comments above your's.
How many people have to bring up latency before YOU realize we've already discussed it? - Typhoon2009, on 02/23/2008, -2/+12I'd like to say I have bad memories of slow slow satellite internet in the early 2000s but alas, I went straight from dial-up to DSL.
- MellerTime, on 02/23/2008, -0/+10Cleans out the tubes?
- bs0l, on 02/23/2008, -1/+11Dugg for Simpsons reference.
- euro22, on 12/17/2008, -0/+10I can believable!
- tcpip4lyfe, on 02/23/2008, -0/+10Forget gaming on it.
- Jaliyl, on 02/23/2008, -0/+10Sad but true, The cable companies like their money too much to spend it on upgrading infrastructure.
- nospinhere, on 02/23/2008, -1/+11Neither is "digg."
- orangefly, on 02/23/2008, -0/+9you a winner hahaha you a winner hahaha
- KNon, on 02/23/2008, -0/+9Dugg for South Park reference.
- Ploosheeta, on 02/23/2008, -0/+9Ok, Japan. You win. Now would you please stop making us look bad?
- MaskedSlacker, on 02/23/2008, -1/+9They do. Its terrible.
- inactive, on 02/24/2008, -1/+9Will it run crysis?
- SolitarySoviet, on 02/23/2008, -2/+10BREAKING Japan launches one satellite that defeats the problem of LOS (Line of sight) and is able to "deliver super high-speed Internet service to homes and businesses around the world." with a super satellite SOMEHOW... it is to be dubbed ULTRA MEGA MEGA GRAND FI-MAX and it has unlimited bandwidth to still oversell, also cooks you breakfast and air drops an Asimo to serve you in bed and has a kick ass hello kitty paint job..... seriously enough of the sensationalist crap ok... every ***** day its someone created something that is lightyears beyond what our primitive little minds have come up with in the past.... I suggest this title instead...
Japan Launches Satellite internet that is much better than Direct-way but still has ***** latency making it worthless for games and still pales in comparison to the already awesome LAN to houses that already exists in japan, you can go back to sleep now, thank you.... - shinythingy, on 02/23/2008, -0/+8it would suck for gaming
- inactive, on 02/23/2008, -2/+10Why do the japanese invest so much money by launching a satellite in order to get super-high-speed-internet?
Two words: HD Porn. (They want to see Fujiko in HD) - UtopiaInTheSky, on 02/23/2008, -0/+7I'm feeling super rucky.
- EXTER, on 02/23/2008, -2/+922233 miles to the satellite
round trip = times 4 = 88932 miles
speed of light (wave propagation) = 186282 mi/sec
latency = 88932 / 186282 = 0.477 seconds (or 447 ms) - barandon0D9, on 02/23/2008, -0/+7The Japanese don't care about Halo.
