- AdmiralAdama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11We need a magnetic surf vs. solar sail race
- WickedDrag0oN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I'm having ST: Deep Space 9 flashbacks...
- Dynamosa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Boats + sail + wind = The way man traveled on water for a long, long time
Space ship + sail + solar wind = The way man travels through space for a long, long time?
This type of article just reminds me of the brilliance of science fiction writers who thought of solar sails in practice so many years ago... - ST0N3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4solar sails are not science fiction, nor is that what this article is talking about.
solar sails have been around for a while now. - tenrec, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Does worrying about the radiation from your home smoke detector keep you up at night?
- Ngai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that would be intense....
- sp3kt4r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm going to become rich and famous after I invent a device that allows you to stab people in the face over the internet
- Asdfglpwglion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The thought that there is an unshielded 2e30kg fusion reactor only 8.3 minutes away fills me with fear!
- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you all whine about not mutating into super heros.
As soon as a chance comes along all you do is bitch. - dvpdziyn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I was hoping to see pics of someone dressed in a silvery costume on a surfboard-like device, but I guess I'll have to wait until Fantastic Four 2 comes out.
- JorgeGT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I suggest Count Dooku's interstellar sloop as the solar sailer contender...
- ( http://www.starwars.com/databank/starship/solarsailer/index.html ) - Spyder810, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Its a nice concept but, "After reaching orbit, his present design would be off to a slow start, taking about a year to escape the Earth's gravity." its seems pathetically slow compared to other concepts.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2OH NOES! Radioactivity!!!!
I guess you really don't like those glow-in-the dark patches on analog watches that help you tell time at night? - jedioniram, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well, that's if CGI can be considered being "dressed". Anyway, you're probably better off not seeing it.
- ekay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1we already have radioactive stuff floating around above us..... space is full of it.. there would be no problem from this extreamly small amout.
- jdodd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1shades of the Ehrenhaft Drive ... a staple of old time science fiction called the gausenjammers (think I got that right) and based on the theories of Felix Ehrenhaft who believed that there was such a thing as magnetic current.
- neuroticus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I, for one, welcome our new outer-space surfing overlords.
- deknmike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Think of the possibilities for monitoring space events. Set in equilibrium where the solar wind exactly matches the gravitational force in geosynchronous orbit around the sun or in front of a black hole (http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/space/images/wallpaper/solarwormhole_med.jpg). Continuous monitoring from a distance impractical for humans. Early warning of incoming solar flares in time to shield the affected systems or reroute communications traffic!
I don't think we have any of these in space right now, but they're in the labs now. maybe in a decade or so... - ekay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0this is what we need to be spending our war budget on ..not fighting over oil. maybe get off this planet before we kill it.
- Lane, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1man this is exactly what Morglack has been telepathically implanting into my subconsciouses for the last decade.
- Sortaburnt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yeah, the idea of a 2.5 mile long "stocking" composed of polonium is not particularly appealing. On the other hand, as long as we "don't lick it," we should be alright.
- rcran, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1riiiiiight...
- orlyfactor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I'd like to see someone surf on Stephin Merritt - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephin_Merritt. Bury this as inaccurate!
- ChiGGz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Anyone else fear having radioactive stuff floating above you?
- Lutraphobia, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0...but will it blend? ha, right guys?
