- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Google is your friend. Ever think to try looking on hubble's website?
http://hubblesite.org/gallery/wallpaper/ - node3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Better to accept reality that, to the universe, you are quite insignificant. However, don't fret. You are still significant to your own existence and to those close to you.
As Carl Sagan used to reply to statements like yours, (paraphrased) "If you wish to be significant, *do* something significant." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Whenever I see pictures like this, I think about the intro to Men In Black. What if we really are just microscopic particles of something much, much larger. Nobody knows. Cool to think about though.
- tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9What is this God you speak of?
- floodyberry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Thanks for all the generic low-res space images with "CRI Online" watermarks, you must have really worked hard for this gem.
- dan8302, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Wow, when I grow up I want to be an astronaut, but I'm afraid I might have to pick one or the other :-)
- CrasyMike, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12buried you as idiot
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Just makes you want to jump to the 24th Century and enlist in Starfleet, doesnt it?
- ChaoStar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6These pictures are stunning, but it's shame the colors don't really look like that.
- ChaoStar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The hubble takes black and white pictures and the color is added during 'processing'. A bunch of layers are used to make these beautiful creations, but you would never be able to see them in real life like they are represented here.
- einstevo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5ok we can be a little more specific here. all astronomical optical ccd cameras do in fact take pictures in black and white, meaning each pixel outputs a number proportional to the number of photons that hit it. The pixels are sensative to a wide range of wavelengths (colors) and the value that the pixel outputs doesn't reflect how many photons of a certain color hit it, only the total number. To get color images a set of filters is used, spanning the sensativity range of the detector. ie red green blue. In astronomy the most popular filter set is the johnson UBV system set up for photometry in 1965. Now i don't know exactly what filters hubble uses, but the idea is that you take an exposure in each filter band and then add them together. To get a colorful pretty picture for the web, somebody at nasa space telescope science institute goes into photoshop, colors the images to match their corresponding filters, and adds up the images.
- kevinmotel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5oh dude, you're going to be so buried...

lol, no wonder religion never dies. - ptcfast2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8It's amazing how small we are compared to the rest of the universe.
- kevinmotel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i was referring to kmk2006

- zip22, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4No, I love sluts. Sluts rock. It's just got to be the right slut.
- kurtu5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@glooper23,
Yeah thats the real problem with religion. As an atheist, I know how insignificant I am with respect from the universe. However, knowing this, I am extremely significant to this planet. This is my only home and any mark I leave on the universe is here, not some fantastic afterlife.
So I don't go off suicide bombing, or ameliorating my guilty feelings and comparing my clothes on Sunday. I don't need a made up volcano god(jehova) to tell me what is moral. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That's what Google Earth is for, ya perv.

I couldn't help but chuckle.. - M4tt3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You said that 2 hours ago. Spammlicious?
- cheez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3xinhua, providing chinese propaganda since 1931.
- NtHammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2im currently reading a book related to this matter, and yes the figures are beyond astronomical (pun?), i really couldn't beleive it when i read it.
the book it called "A short history of nearly everything" by Bill Bryson, i have just begun the book but it already very interesting. - EricCiccone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For those looking for HQ pictures from space try this link http://www.spacetelescope.org/images/archive/top100/
I highly recommend going outside sometime this week, while the moon is 'missing' and the skies are clear and really appreciate the beauty of nature. - kurtu5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well to be fair, sometimes the colors do look like that.
If you got one big eye and can gather a ***** load of photons. Otherwise you can barely see these things with the nakid eye. Even from 1 A.U. most nebulas and what not probably look like a slightly less dark sky interspersed with stars.
The planet images are farily much spot on. - never102, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5The glory of the big bang?
- kurtu5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm with dan8302, I would rather pretend that I'm significant than to actualy have to deal with the truth.
- ldavid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1read other comments before posting your own...it's already been said tunac.
- ldavid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1don't spam! you've already said this before...
*shakes head* - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think they're colored artificially.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, you're half right.. that IS about the actual size of his a-hole.
- kurtu5, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Because deep down you know that "Chinky McChinkster" appreciates beauty and the wonder just as much as us "Kikel Ojos"
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Chill - it's everyone's universe.
- thursvai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1NtHammer : I have that book and I'm nearly half way through it. Like it's titled, it goes through much more than just the universe.. basically everything science related. I'm sure there are better books for more information (or just ming-boggling numbers) on it.
- UrfTheWog, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Why on "earth" would I go to a Chinese website that ripped off pictures created by American ingenuity that are freely available in higher resolution without some LAME marketing overlay on it?.
How the hell did this make the front page? Uber-*****-lame. - ButterBuddha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The image of the green eye http://news.xinhuanet.com/photo/2006-12/18/content_5495732.htm is creepy....
- tylerjames, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2dugg you down

- SLH06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That green galaxy is false color right? Looks like it came from the last star trek movie.
- SLH06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oops i didn't mean to put my comment there. accidentally hit the reply button .sorry.
- sm3287, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh man that's beautiful, brought a tear to my eye.,,,,,
- smittyfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn, beat me to it.
From the gallery, the most important image ever taken by man. Ever.

(yup image already posted) - SLH06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That green galaxy is false color right? Looks it came out of the last Star Trek movie.
- skidzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Imagine that our galaxy is a pinhead...zoom in 20x...you'll see our quadrant...20x more...you'll see our 'local group' of stars...20x more...'Sol', our sun...20x more...Earth, a little blue planet with a few green continents....10x more...North America....And so on...
Compared to the vastness of the Universe, we are all smaller than an single atom on that very pinhead. - KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The FSM uses Opera! Your false gods and their false web browsers are lies! As are the claims of the Reformed FSM Church that the FSM has switched to Firefox since 2.0!
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Actually, what i personally find amazing is why people find it amazing that we are so small. It shows that even in this 21st century, humans have quite a big opinion of their place in the universe. It is quite an improvement that many of us can at least realize the fact that we are small, however.

"The green and blue regions show where the atmosphere is clear, allowing sunlight to penetrate deep into Uranus."
I'm 36 and still chuckle when I hear the word Uranus. Damn! -
