news.cnet.com — In Northern California, among the Cascade Mountains about a 90-minute drive from Redding, is the Hat Creek Radio Observatory, the home of the Allen Telescope Array. The ATA, as it's called, is a collection of radio antennas, that together make up the world's first telescope dedicated to the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) project.

    The universe is huge. Huge. Huge. I cannot stress this enough, the universe is huge. It is massive. MASSIVE. The idea that our planet is the only one with life is almost laughable compared to how huge it is.

However, if someone did design it all, i think there must be life on other planets. Seriously, who would waste all their time making such a big universe for such a small planet?

  • one1plus1one, on 12/13/2008, -1/+2I'm just reading a SF book by the Hugo award winning author Robert Charles Wilson called "Blind Lake".

    It's about a project in the future, in which humanity launches an array of space telescopes, past Jupiter, so that they can image Earth-like planets.

    However, as usual, NASA screws up, and there's a glitch in the array's software, causing blurry images.

    So they use one of the worlds most powerful mainframe quantum computers, to try to enhance and clean up the image. This future-computer kicks total @ss and is the size of several buildings. The computer is too complex to program manually, so they use evolution-self-programming software, so that the computer can "evolve" several test programs, and use the program that works best to clean up the image.

    However, the computer goes way beyond what they expected. It takes blurry images from distant planets, and somehow becomes quantumly entangled with them, and is able to zoom into any detail on the planet, almost to a microscopic level.

    At that point they begin finding life on other planets, and start following the daily life of individual alien creatures.

    But of course some of the aliens "sense" they are being observed (perhaps their alien biological brain has quantum abilities that the human brain does not)... and so they become quantumly entangled with our quantum-computer, and the alien consciousness begins affecting our Earth based computer...

    Anyways... it's a damn good book, is all I should have typed, instead of this quick plot summary.

    Premise: at least 1 in 100 solar systems has a small body in an orbit similar to Earth's with a similar yellow sun and a type M atmosphere.

    Guarantee: some forms of life must exist elsewhere.

    Now the real question is: what defines intelligence/sentience and is that guaranteed to exist elsewhere?

  • inactive, on 12/13/2008, -8/+2Until proponents of intelligent design can explain why believing in an all powerful being who just is, who is far more complicated and intelligent than us makes more sense than us evolving over billions of years (of the universe), then I have no time for any of them.

    If you accept for a second that we had to have been aided in order to make us what we are then you can't just answer that with a being who is even less likely to exist due to an increased level of intelligence and beauty with no clue as to its origin. The answer intelligent design gives to the question of existence is essentially the same question but even more complicated and unlikely.
