- Lane, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19To better explain, resonance in this case is referring to in this theory that the moon Mimas orbit is causing the tight grouping of the particles creating the ring because it is in an orbit of exactly a 7:6 ratio as compared to the G ring. Even though Mimas has a low density for a moon of its size; this is still plenty of heft to pull the billions near microscopic particles of dust despite the distance between them when the slightly faster speed of orbit or resonance of Mimas accounted for. You see it is with this resonance that Mimas is now able to create a larger gravitational field then if it was in sync with the ring because it has the effect of pulling it along.
- AriaStar, on 10/10/2007, -5/+18The title is misleading because it's not SOLVED, but Dugg anyway because the article is an interesting one. Please try to use more accurate descriptions in the future. Thanks.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8You should work for NASA.
- Heggy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Well first of all, it's incorrect title, even on the BBC's part. The mystery is not solved, they just think that the G ring is held in place because of the odd effects caused by the occurences of resonances, which result from Mimas orbiting six times for the G ring's seven. Personally I do not know why resonances work in this case, it's not explained, I just know of resonance in music. But this article is about a theory, that may need to be better defined.
- MrsButtersworth, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5"step forward" does not equal "solved"
- Pritchard, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It probably has to do something with gravity :P
- RawOysters, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The resonance keeps the material in place. The material is collected from moons similar to Enceladus on which volcanic activity is taking place resulting in ash. Until Enceladus it was believed that a moon could not produce volcanic activity. Saturn has 60 moons at last count.
- fredrated, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3G string, G ring, G spot, when will it end?
- hoovcluck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Making a significant step forward in understanding the dynamics of a mystery and solving it are two completely different things.
- jsleeman, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6wow I feel stupid I read the title as Satan's ring
- manicallday, on 10/10/2007, -5/+7Does this mean that we can finally pimp the earth with some rings?
- InfinitySnatch, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I'm afraid it's because of super science.
- tkotam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Sorry for comment hijacking. In case you would like to figure out where the heck are the rings are located, here it is. http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2002/images/rings/ringnames_big.gif
- fpcyber, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I am not sure I understand that picture. The article didn't help me much either. Anyone care to explain this a bit?
- jcaino, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2man, i could hear prof farnsworth saying just that.
- mountaincable, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Did that article not seem like they could have summed it up with one paragraph?
- jamin, on 10/19/2007, -4/+4Anyone else read the title as "Sauron's ring mystery is solved" ?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2yes we all know where its from
- Sdiggmatism, on 10/10/2007, -1/+07:6 eh? Sounds like ring management is as easy as a bendix on a starter.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1The G ring is one of Saturn's outermost rings
- saltmiser, on 10/10/2007, -6/+4I read that as G string...
- loganarcher, on 10/19/2007, -3/+1First you see the ring...then you DiE!
- usherzx, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1no no no the answer is on orion's bell, did u not watch men in black..wtf people
- Ai3d, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1Is it the red ring of death?
- DeathJux, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3Don't you get it, guys? It kind of sounds like ANUS which is where poop comes out! Who can "solve" that "mystery?" Certainly not movieguide!
- JDoms, on 10/10/2007, -6/+0damn, beat me to it by just a few mins
- Frosty122, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1no no we changed it....it's now called Urectum /futurama
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -10/+2They solved the G-Ring. Now, let's solve the G-Spot.
- BrapAllgood, on 10/10/2007, -8/+0Red Light Entertainment makes a DVD how-to. Sure helped my life out. :)
LOTS. - movieguide, on 10/10/2007, -18/+6Now only Uranus to solve
