***** YEA! - saleem, on 02/22/2008, -4/+266it's hard to record 1080p at 30fps while tracking a 17,000 mph missile in the upper atmosphere?
- Topher06, on 02/22/2008, -63/+303Wow, you would think the military would invest in better video equipment. 1 billion spent to shoot down the satellite but they could only afford a Sanyo VHS Camcorder, priceless.
- Dradis, on 02/22/2008, -10/+203BOOM HEADSHOT
- stevenscorsese, on 02/22/2008, -5/+121That's great footage. But I was expecting to hear the Death Star explosion music.
- pearlfender2, on 02/22/2008, -5/+116still wondering who got to push the big red button?
- inactive, on 02/22/2008, -6/+116I'm Ron Burgundy?
- redbenn, on 02/22/2008, -1/+98Fire Controlman 2nd Class Andrew Jackson pushed the final controls that sent the Standard Missile-3 from the guided missile cruiser USS Lake Erie screaming into space to strike the dead and spacecraft.

I'm looking at you Hollywood. - BrendanSheehan, on 02/22/2008, -5/+97They should have mounted a Hi-Def camera on the rocket.
- inactive, on 02/22/2008, -1/+90Thanks, Topher06, for not comprehending the complexity of the focal lengths, imaging devices and tracking equipment necessary to record an event of this nature. In case you weren't following along:
The satellite was moving at 17,000MPH. The missile was moving at 5,000MPH. The intercept took place at around 130 miles above the Earth.
People have enough trouble getting decent images of stationary subjects on the ground in full daylight. - Typhoon2009, on 02/22/2008, -1/+81Damn, and I had my "POOL'S CLOSED DUE TO HYDRAZINE" sign ready and everything.
- dotlizard, on 02/22/2008, -11/+85that was friggin' awesome. great shooting there.
- poonaka, on 02/22/2008, -9/+76Goodbye fox news satelite!

- thespudmall, on 02/22/2008, -0/+61wait.....Andrew Jackson????
- rhinopig, on 02/22/2008, -1/+49He thought the satellite was some sort of space indian.
- thestuffmeister, on 02/22/2008, -3/+50I'm an aerospace major in college, and here's my take: to have any sort of viewing equipment on a missile you would need a rounded nose on that missile. When a round nosed missile travels at supersonic speeds enormous pressure-drag is created, which means the missile has to be much larger (bulkier) to produce more thrust to counter that drag. Also, a high-def camera would require some good transmitting equipment which takes up much more space and payload. Adding such modifications would probably make the missile project an order of magnitude more expensive and only result in a few frames of decent video.
- lovestospooge, on 02/22/2008, -4/+45Coming again, to save the mother ***** day yeah
- DannySpace, on 02/22/2008, -3/+43"Great shot kid; that was one in a million!"

- Cl1mh4224rd, on 02/22/2008, -1/+33> "wait.....Andrew Jackson????"
Secret government cloning project. Shhh... - OpenFuture, on 02/22/2008, -1/+29***** RICK ASTLEY IS NOT A SATELLITE!!!
- inactive, on 02/22/2008, -1/+27Great shot kid. That was one in a million!
- airwalkery2k, on 02/22/2008, -3/+28It disappears of course! Haven't you ever blown anything up? I have blown stuff up.
Conservation of mass? That's heresy. - inactive, on 02/22/2008, -1/+25Yes we are thank you. It's one of our many talents. What is your species good at?
- fauxtank, on 02/22/2008, -2/+24Well, in this case, almost all of it will, considerably less at least than the Chinese anti-satellite launch in 2007 (where "millions" of pieces of debris were put into orbit). Apparently for this launch they hit it at very low altitude, at the point when it was about to reenter anyways.
Having said that, if it ever happened that a lot of satellites were blown up in some sort of conflict, it would seriously ***** up our chances of even getting to space safely, let alone staying in orbit for any amount of time. It's a really bad idea to develop weapons like this, especially given that our leaders have shown their willingness to use them. - TheNik, on 02/22/2008, -3/+24I thought movies were recorded at 24fps. :(
- DoMaGe, on 02/22/2008, -0/+21Well, some of it does.
- reeds101, on 02/22/2008, -0/+21No Scope?
- BrendanSheehan, on 02/22/2008, -0/+21Because it would be cool. And yes.
- centran, on 02/22/2008, -2/+22OMG! haX0r!!!
- davidwasman, on 02/22/2008, -1/+21maybe not, but he is a heavenly body.

- jaydoj, on 02/22/2008, -2/+19IN MY DAMN POOL!!!! THATS WHERE!!!! DAMN YOU UNITED STATES NAVY!!!!!
- wakefun, on 02/22/2008, -12/+29Does anyone actually buy the reason we shot this satellite down? This was, 100%, practice for future military satellite killing... not ours... our future enemies.
- alanocu, on 02/22/2008, -9/+26that is pretty darn incredible
- DeskFlyer, on 02/22/2008, -0/+16Damn E-5s have all the fun.
- Mootabolife, on 02/22/2008, -2/+18He was expecting a scene out of Armageddon.
- jaymzdean, on 02/22/2008, -8/+24Wow. Humans are very good at amusing themselves.
- ThetaDot, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1524fps is "cinema" speed (TV, movies, etc). Just about any digital video recording device these days can record in excess of 30 or even 60 frames per second. If an editor wants to create a 'cinema' feel in digital video they can purposely drop frames to bring it back down to 24fps.
- Typhoon2009, on 02/22/2008, -2/+16Yeah, the moon landing was faked too right? And the Jews did 9/11?
- brentinkc, on 02/22/2008, -2/+16How awesome is it?
- Durrok, on 02/22/2008, -1/+15Well there you go ruining the first rule of Usenet.
- legendxx, on 02/22/2008, -5/+19These small triumphs really do restore the patriotic pride back into the american people. We've had enough ***** in the last couple years.. let's hear about some of the amazing things we can still accomplish.
- sputza, on 02/22/2008, -1/+14Awesome!
- yacks, on 02/22/2008, -0/+13You should just change your sign to "Pool Closed due to Dihydrogen Monoxide" and hang that, sit back and laugh.
- oxdeltaxo, on 02/22/2008, -1/+14Hello planet to satellite missile, you are the first in a long line of space weapons...yes you are. Coochi coochi coo
- yacks, on 02/22/2008, -2/+14nonono Jaws did 9/11... The Jews.. they shot JFK from the grassy knoll
