- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24This makes my tricorder tingle.
- shadowkiller137, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14this is not missile defense, it's for very small particles and EM waves
- theboozer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Beautiful! The only thing that could make me happier would be to find that female astronauts are now required to wear miniskirts during missions, and that the cockpits of future spacecraft will have a Captain's chair smack-dab in the center of the room.
- oxdeltaxo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You should die!
- jackkerouac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8You are wrong.

You had better stick with watching American Idol. - PotatoFro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6seriously, i couldn't agree with you more - well said.
- AtHomeBoy2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Better than they can do on Star Trek!
- tonyellard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5More importantly though, can this deflector's dish be "reconfigured" to emit phased particle waves and thetons and slice and dice and make julienne fries?
- AtHomeBoy2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I don't like the comment of the guy at the end. Yes material provides the ultimate protection, but if we don't experiment and see what the possibilities are, we never know what can be done. Who knows, this research could lead other cooler technologies like... real shields!
- fangor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sure. You just modify the phase variance.
- KamikazeeDriver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6ok, not quite what i was looking for. The next time I see 'news' with the word 'Star Trek' in it, I want it the headline to say something like, "Holodecks perfected"
- jnorris441, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7[NERD]The shields of the Enterprise were not made of Plasma[/NERD]
- m3sm3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5News headline from 2017: "Deflector shields cause cancer!"
- oxdeltaxo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Give it a rotating phase angle and a much much higher amplitude and you might just have a defensive shield capable of stopping solid matter. Although trying to fit the power facilities necessary onto a satellite would be near impossible.
- AdmiralAdama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The real question is: can you transport people thru Plasma Bubble Deflectors? That would be a real advance!
- bootfail, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@mrmagenta
Tricorders are star trek, not star wars. - Matri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Buried and blocked
- moocow1452, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Shield's Up!
- nathanwalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@mrmagenta
Considering you JUST watched it, I'm sure you caught the fact that they were talking about Star Wars, and not Star Trek when Randall made the LOTR geek puke. Were you high when you watched it?
In related news, this is a pretty cool read. - smokestack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sorry... but if "The Earth's magnetic field protects spacecraft in low-Earth orbits" why wouldn't a regular magnetic field of the relatively weak strength of earth's at orbital distances do the same if a spacecraft generated it itself? why the need for something so exotic?
- virinchi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I compliment the Scientists. This will eventually lead to right configuration of Shields in Space

Cosmology Interlinks many fields - Mc_Carter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Then how will a new and hip fantastic 4 save us from dr. doom.
- Wacer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I wonder how much energy it would take to put a shield like this around a ship the size of the shuttle. Or better yet is there a size per watt ratio? Anyone?
- lostr0gue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Thanks, HAL.
- V1ncent, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2It'll protect the crew by killing them.
- ablez3, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1resistance is futile......you will be assimilated.
- curbcheck, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Nerds.
- gquaglia, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Thats right, they don't consist of anything since they are not real.
- ablez3, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1there is something wrong with this idea.
space ship takes off.

(correct me if i am wrong) - trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1Lets see the Chinese shoot down a satellite equipped with this!
- mrmagenta, on 10/12/2007, -28/+1LORD OF THE RINGS FTW
