- scratt, on 08/11/2008, -7/+443The signal has been decoded..
Apparently Princess Azura wants to transfer 6Billion Billion Riles to your account as she is trying to get her recently deceased father's (The previous regent of her planet) funds out from under the newly imposed Military Junta on Sagitarius 19. What she needs from you is your Social Security number, address, phone number, bank details etc.. - fcrow, on 08/10/2008, -19/+362I want to believe.
- josepablos, on 08/11/2008, -10/+265the transmission says
"We are a very advance civilization ... but can't run Crysis". - ironeus, on 08/10/2008, -15/+247This is precisely what I've been waiting for!
- synystar, on 08/11/2008, -1/+168"Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: mankind. Basically, it's made up of two separate words- "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean ? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind."
-- Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey - inactive, on 08/10/2008, -44/+202Wow this is so awesome. Now we can kill them by broadcasting Bill O Reily on the waves or something

- HHP2K, on 08/10/2008, -9/+151So, what kind of questions are we asking here?
What does it mean - ? Well, to start answering that, we have to ask ourselves, what else BESIDES intelligent life can create radio signals of that strength? We've all heard about the WOW signal before, so this seems to be, in some respect, on par with that event. Given the rarity of these events, how likely is it that this is or is not intelligent life?
Lots of questions, not enough answers, unfortunately. - MuffinPatrol, on 08/11/2008, -3/+125Now what are you going to do?
- majordanger, on 08/11/2008, -0/+117Sorry to disappoint you all but this is not the "Lil Green Men signal". Just a dish marking a milestone in sensitivity.
1420 Mhz is a natural frequency.
Hydrogen gas clouds emit radio waves at a frequency of 1420 MHz.
That is why they call it the Hydrogen Line Frequency. - RogerStrong, on 08/11/2008, -3/+104Calm down - this is a NATURAL radio signal. They're not claiming a SETI contact.
- TheCollective00, on 08/11/2008, -1/+99Inconceivable!
- damnyooneek, on 08/11/2008, -2/+97no they'll just interpret it as no intelligent life forms on earth
- ZincSaucier, on 08/11/2008, -4/+97So did you call in to sagittarius and request a song about 30,000 years ago?
- majordanger, on 08/11/2008, -2/+87The article does not claim it to be an intelligent signal, just the first natural radio signal received by the Indlebe Radio Telescope from beyond our solar system.
The only intelligent radio signals received from beyond our solar system came from the Voyager and Pioneer spacecrafts. - Hyperion1144, on 08/11/2008, -1/+79Don't forget: Molds were recently discovered growing inside of the concrete containment shell around the remains of the old Chernobyl Nuclear Reactor; molds that were found to actually be using the radiation for energy. This is similar (as I read the article anyway) to the way green plants photosynthesize light to create energy. Proof that life (at least very simple life) can survive and thrive in radiation levels previously thought to be hostile to all life.
- Zorkon, on 08/11/2008, -1/+79Oh geez.
By "first", they mean it's the first signal they've managed to detect using *their* spiffy low-cost small radio telescope equipment. By no means are they saying it's a radio signal from intelligent life beyond our solar system.
On the door to the observatory at my university is a photo of M100, a spiral galaxy. The caption underneath says "First photo of M100 taken with the 14" Celestron telescope" followed by my name. I'm pretty sure some guy named "Messier" found it first ... it just happened that I took the first photo of it with our new telescope.
Same thing here. Sag-A is a big radio source. Sorry Digg, no little green (or grey) men. - WordsnCollision, on 08/10/2008, -8/+81The extreme intensity of the radiation at the center of the galazy precludes any possibility of life. Life as we know it, at least...

- modusop, on 08/11/2008, -3/+63someone call Jodie Foster pronto - we've got a machine to build.
- eeron, on 08/11/2008, -2/+60Hold on, 1420 MHz is a naturally occurring hydrogen emission. The report is not about alien transmissions.
- Beowulf2112, on 08/11/2008, -0/+54Sagittarius A is a known radio source...
if thats what your hinting at - Seaton, on 08/11/2008, -11/+65I, for one, welcome our new Sagittarian overlords...
- rentmitchum, on 08/11/2008, -2/+53I'm pretty sure you'll hear it go "One more time, mmmm.. I can feel it. Celebration.. tonight.. celebrate. We don't stop-UH"
Etc, etc.. - Osahar, on 08/11/2008, -8/+59The story doesn't say it's a 'natural' signal.

"Those green bastards." - malanic, on 08/11/2008, -0/+35As far as radio astronomy goes, it looks like small scale university experiment/exercise. The achievement is that they got it to work.

Congratulations! You have won 10,0000,000,000 Sagis of Opoxium Lottery. Please pay a small processing fee to claim the reward! VISA, MasterCard, Western Galactic Union accepted. - burjzyntski, on 08/11/2008, -1/+34Are any of those Rick Astley? I'd rather wonder than click...
- Cenobite, on 08/11/2008, -1/+32The only environment "hostile" to life (I believe), is an environment very different to the one in which a particular brand of life evolved.
I'm open to the possibility that a form of life could have evolved in the center of the galaxy. Life which would die when introduced to the conditions of Earth for the same reason we'd die if thrust into the center of the Milky Way.
Let's not forget the weird and wonderful creatures thriving in the world's oceans many kilometers below sea-level. - ZincSaucier, on 08/11/2008, -0/+31actually it appears that the aliens' transmission was a rick roll. and it's target was indeed earth
- RogerStrong, on 08/11/2008, -2/+33So do I. But this is a NATURAL radio signal. They're not claiming a SETI contact.
- venicerocco, on 08/11/2008, -0/+31Excellent documentary related to the subject. BBC Horizon's "Are We Alone in the Universe?"

Enjoy - crazycraka, on 08/11/2008, -2/+31Wouldn't it be ***** crazy if the aliens rickrolled us?
- koldmilk, on 08/11/2008, -2/+30Looking it up... might be a super massive black hole that released the radio waves.
- chevyorange, on 08/11/2008, -1/+28The joke has already been made with "x". Substituting a "y" and repeating the joke is not funny.
- inactive, on 08/11/2008, -0/+27You keep using that word...
- hpfreak26, on 08/11/2008, -0/+26Quick! They're trying to tell us something! What's that? They want us to turn off the LHC!
- Beowulf2112, on 08/11/2008, -0/+25Waiting for what? Someone to post a story about a known radio source emitting radio waves?
- boheme, on 08/11/2008, -0/+25For all the folks reading Digg who don't understand 'radio astronomy': This article is not claiming to have received an 'intelligent' radio signal. It is heralding the achievement of a group of students who have built a radio telescope sensitive enough to pick up the radio emissions of a star 30 light years away. Radio astronomy is the study of stars via analyzing their EM radiation expressed as 'radio waves'. This is not to be confused with radio emissions from intelligent civilizations.
Alien life has not been found, but there is about to be a new 'open source' radio telescope. That is pretty damn cool in itself.
