- Kucher, on 02/06/2008, -4/+61Xenu sent many to their deaths in this volcano as well.
- enivid, on 02/06/2008, -2/+40It's also the highest volcano in the solar system (I thought that's what it was known for).
- asauterChicago, on 02/06/2008, -1/+21To give you an idea how huge this is (for us not on metric system), Mount Everest is 29,028 feet, or about 5 miles high. This is 22 Kilometers high... in miles, about 14 miles high, almost 3 times as high as Mount Everest....
- jrak, on 02/06/2008, -0/+10On Mars, unlike larger Earth, there is essentially one huge tectonic plate that was fixed relative to the mantle. So once the volcano started, it continued to grow in one place to its massive size. Contrast with Earth where crust plates travel independently of soft spots in the mantle, creating strings of volcanoes such as Hawaii. Plus there is obviously more erosion on Earth.
Great picture! - gachamp2, on 02/06/2008, -4/+13The highest Volcano on Mars...try the largest in our Solar System!
- zaldoe, on 02/06/2008, -4/+11that volcano is nearly triple the height of everest
- tman84, on 02/06/2008, -2/+9Send the Exofleet to wipe out Phaeton.
- grenden, on 02/06/2008, -0/+5This makes for an awesome background.
- nerdvernacular, on 02/06/2008, -0/+5Where's the NeoSapien base?
- Rhendal, on 02/06/2008, -0/+4So I'm assuming this means that the Mars core isn't made of ice.
Which means Douglas Quaid won't be activating that ancient alien machine to terraform the planet.
Which means eyeballs won't be popping out of their sockets while people gasp for air there.
Man, reality sucks. - VeryBoredNow, on 02/06/2008, -3/+7It's the butthole of Mars.
- ZionicIon, on 02/06/2008, -1/+4Nice reference! Best cartoon ever....
- inactive, on 02/06/2008, -1/+4but there's no sea level on mars tho... so i assume that if there are still oceans on mars, this volcano wouldn't be as big as it looks. why is there a -5 km? is 0km the proposed sea level? or the average height of the entire mars surface.
- tman84, on 02/06/2008, -0/+3Without Torrent, this show would have been lost forever to me. Only cartoon where people actually got blown up and didn't just "eject" at the last minute. The writing is brilliant too.
- rameznabel, on 02/06/2008, -0/+2nice resolution
- shauncullen, on 02/06/2008, -0/+2That's groovy man: it's like totally psychedelic.
- jamangold, on 02/06/2008, -0/+2The square mileage of the volcano covers an area roughly the size of Texas.
- onionoino, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2most excellent pixies reference, first thing that popped into my head when i saw the title
- Moshcrates, on 02/06/2008, -5/+7Thats awesome. The highest volcano on earth, above sea level, is 2km. The highest volcano, starting from the ocean floor, on earth is 22km appx. Olympus Mons is definitely massive
- inactive, on 02/06/2008, -0/+2http://lifeonmarspart6.ytmnd.com
- Thezeppelin62, on 02/06/2008, -0/+2It's actually dormant now.
- illt, on 02/06/2008, -1/+3i hope mars gets hit with a big asteroid.
Would be cool to see it erupt - ropers, on 02/06/2008, -0/+2Heh. Funnay. :) But even more funny to see how people have dugg you down because they didn't get the joke. Apparently Digg has become abundantly populated by blithering eejits who wouldn't recognize irony if hit over the head with it.
- cheesecake42, on 02/06/2008, -1/+3i became completely obsessed with olympus mons about 6 months ago and named my new jazz/metal/stoner improv band after it.
- jkahrs595, on 02/06/2008, -0/+2eh, what can you do...
- obzidian, on 02/06/2008, -1/+3Awesome. You should dig for fire as well.
- donjuan571, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1The peak of Olympus Mons is 300 miles wide, if you were to stand on top of it, the peak itself would block out the horizon, and you would not be able to see down
- ubuwalker31, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1Flaming Lips = Mons Venus?
- jrak, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1Most opinion is that Martian volcanoes are all extinct. But that would be cool.
- allywilson, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1That's why I knew it, yeah. Anyone else stare at it for a sec and think "...looks kinda like a cell being attacked by a virus/other cells?" like in movies? Maybe me just being random...
- typicalusername, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1This is totally the domain of Queen Dopopopulous.
- AshsToAshs, on 02/06/2008, -1/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympus_Mons
- abatch, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1It's also as big around as the state of Missouri. Lots of prime real estate for distant future ski resorts.
- kaffelars, on 02/06/2008, -1/+2Kilimanjaro is almost 6km and is a volcano. It's not active at the moment though.
- thespursfan, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1Finished Red Mars, now I'm in the middle of Green Mars. I'd like to visit Olympus Mons one day.
- Merendino, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1Its not only the highest volcano in our solar system... its the highest Mountain too. Over 88,000 ft high. That my friends is over 3 times the height of Mt. Everest. Damn thats cool.
- dsendecki, on 02/06/2008, -2/+3Dugg for Flaming Lips reference
- jdhoover, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1From http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2001/MarinaTsukerma ... "Olympus Mons: the largest mountain in the Solar System rising 24 km (78,000 ft.) above the surrounding plain. Its base is more than 500 km in diameter and is rimmed by a cliff 6 km (20,000 ft) high …"
- angstd, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1"Mars is amazing! What are the reasons?"
Good memories.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3U49S5NltM - sanman, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1Mons Veneris is much more popular
- MovieQuest, on 02/06/2008, -1/+2Dugg for fire. [also for above Pixies ref, and even cooler that the Lips got a ref as well. Go Mars]
- Grok22, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1seems to have several culdura
- fixty, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1Judging from the elevation legend at the bottom of the picture it looks like the cliff on the western edge of the large caldera is 3 MILES deep.
- Dyssolve, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1Talk about a good place to go hang gliding.
- inactive, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1I would love to see a high quality, ground level picture of that. Top down is cool, but really hard to visualize.
- Mushroonaut, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1How long will it take to see ads that say: " Go climb Olympus Mons, the highest volcanoe in the solar system"
- Dyssolve, on 02/06/2008, -1/+2I could climb it in a day.
- laceration, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1I rotated it, so it fit the widescreen better. It has a great effect w/ semi-transparent panels.
- NDUO, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1Also check out the color change of the crater. It's several kilometers deep I believe.
- MarsSentinel, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1dugg for "mons"
