- DmtriPutin, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4Pfft, Let's pull the old guys back out of retirement, rip the ole spacecrafts from museums and give them a second go around! It'd be just like Armageddon!
- starmanjones, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2i like that idea. i love nasa- its one of humanities high points. they have done a great job on building the path to space... they filled the nitch when no one else could do the job. but still they are a science and research organization. nobody does that better.
but for politics and funding they have to work for zero losses. i think that has manifested itself as... over planning and over engineering... the shuttles was supposed to be safer and cheaper and it was neither.
the shuttles and crews were lost because the shuttle runs too close to engineering limits. when you run too close to engineering limits then every little mistake can cause the loss of a shuttle so you need over planning. when you add in stupid budget games- engineering and compromises because of it... complicated and expensive don't buy you safe and cheap. i keep thinking of the scene in armegeddon when they are sitting around the table going over ideas... contraptions... thats what happens i think.
the russians are using the same ol same ol... they have the market cornered on living in space. they supported mir long past its scheduled retirement. they didn't use a shuttle. they have lost very few and the cosmonauts that were lost happened as an odds thing... you fly enough jets someone is going to get killed.
bring back aldrin and give him a budget and he would get us to mars. soon. - starmanjones, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2hello... is this scaled composites? burt rutan? could we order a couple dozen of those fiberglass spaceships? the military industrial complex just can't seem to make a spacecraft that costs less than half the gross nation product of all the nations on earth...
- starmanjones, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1bush has spent everything for the next hundred years. all american science including nasa has been politicized. if you don't contact the whitehouse to find out the results of your research then you are of no value to god and support evolution.
- GunnarJ, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Uh oh... Budget is really a problem lately for a lot of people.... I didnt think NASA would have money problems though!
