- bananapatch, on 09/15/2008, -1/+44Looks like the Nexus Ribbon from Star Trek Generations.
Yes, I'm an incorrigible dork. - bananapatch, on 09/15/2008, -1/+10If you think stolen panties smell good, wait until you find an actual girl -- who showers!
'Course, judging by how easily intimidated you are by words you don't recognize, I suspect you have a bit of growing up to do before you're likely to be taken seriously by a woman of that level of sophistication. Keep an eye on your testicles; when they descend, you'll know that adolescence is almost upon you, and you'll be ready to start trying to approach human females!
When you first start out, don't be discouraged when they dismiss you as a joke. Fair or not, that's just part of the life of an intellectually underdeveloped douchebag with delusions of adequacy. You'll get used to it, and as you approach the age of 12 or 13, girls -- well, realistically, teenage boys with no self-esteem, when blind drunk, or filthy old pedophiles, also drunk -- might notice you. The key is persistence.
And if not, I've heard that desperate losers such as yourself can usually get their little monkeys spanked by other, equally desperate losers down by the docks, or wherever junkies congregate in your neighbourhood.
But then, I'm probably not telling you anything you don't already know. - MacBookForMe, on 09/15/2008, -2/+10Good morning mother Nature.
- housewarmer, on 09/15/2008, -2/+9Well, better than you who's only smelled pussy by sniffing stolen panties.
- bluekangaroo, on 09/16/2008, -0/+5One NASA engineer to the other: "Hey, has anyone seen my pink highlighter?"
- DrVoltron, on 09/16/2008, -0/+5Almost everyone says "1006 AD"
- paulieslim, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4what is it full of fowl mouth racist 13 year olds

- darkjolt, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4I just had the image of a 13 year old with a duck for a mouth.
- Walgreenz, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3When I see things like this, it makes me sad. Sad because I know in my lifetime I will never be able to explore space...
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -1/+4Time has no meaning there. The predator has no teeth.
Most. Obscure . Reference. Ever. - snds, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3"Someone once told me that time was a predator that stalked us all our lives. I rather believe that time is a companion who goes with us on the journey and reminds us to cherish every moment, because it will never come again. What we leave behind is not as important as how we've lived. After all Number One, we're only mortal."
Yay for nerddom *highfives* - peestandingup, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3Cool, its got a sorta champagne rosy color to it. Champagne supernova??
- webwulf, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2Truly amazing. We need to get out there. I know the expense is going to be huge to get us out there on a permanent basis (living in space). But it is something we as a race need to do. I think we have only scratched the surface of what is out there.
- aforsberg, on 09/16/2008, -1/+3I love watching people argue on the Internet.
- scoottie, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2at least its not halo 2

- xister, on 09/16/2008, -0/+1"Time is the fire in which we burn..."
I thought the exact same thing when I saw that ribbon. ;) - LilRabbitFooFoo, on 09/16/2008, -0/+1No one said it is coming DIRECTLY towards us. Ahem.

NASA Graphic Design Element of the Day: Supernova Ribbon From Hubble - gdonald, on 09/16/2008, -0/+1Perhaps a little..
http://startrek.wikia.com/wiki/Image:Nexus.jpg - LilRabbitFooFoo, on 09/16/2008, -0/+1Next time, you might want to post a link for the 96% of the world's computer users instead of the 3% of cliquers.
- scoottie, on 09/15/2008, -1/+1it looks like someone smudge some chocolate on the picture
- JBabin3xB, on 09/16/2008, -1/+1I'm going to laugh if they find out its something on the lens
- alfunso3, on 09/16/2008, -0/+0And here's the link to picture of the ribbon from the movie:
http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/memoryalpha/en/i ... - alfunso3, on 09/16/2008, -0/+0That was my first impression too- the ribbon that Soran desperately tries to get into. The ribbon is the entrance way to the Nexus. Nexus is where your desires become reality, or rather your wants and desires shape the world around you.
- downer1, on 09/16/2008, -0/+0Where's the giant 64billion ounce Coke that stream is coming from?
- Deadguy71, on 09/16/2008, -0/+0C'mon NASA.. it's just the hubble camera strap.. sheesh!
- thatsnoname, on 09/22/2008, -0/+0Also if the ribbon travels further, it gets stretched out a lot (due to velocity differences within the ribbon), and thereby becomes more tenuous. That's also why we don't see old planetary nebulae etc. - they simply dissolve into their surroundings!
- pwrblnc, on 09/23/2008, -0/+0How fun. Like a giant slide in the universe ready to be enjoyed. What a ride that would be. "Fun"
- erdna1010110, on 09/16/2008, -1/+0Download APOD viewer for more, much better astronomy photos.

This picture simply doesnt compare to the others you see on the widget day by day. Like the one below, it was posted this morning.
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/image/0809/w5wide ...
Also the widget allows you to read about the picture and provides various links for each shot, its pretty cool. - Palscience1, on 09/15/2008, -3/+2It looks like DNA folding. What a Mystery Universe
- theotherkiwi, on 09/16/2008, -1/+0So the ribbon has travelled 7 light years since the super nova was observed one thousand years ago and it's one thousand light years away from us (so the nova occurred two thousand years ago), so if we wait about 142 thousand years then we'll all be wiped out by the "death ribbon" when it reaches Earth. Yes?
- theotherkiwi, on 09/16/2008, -1/+0Oops, I mean the ribbon has travelled 60 light years 1000 years after the nova, how many years before it gets here?
- michelenixon, on 09/16/2008, -2/+1Wow, Bananapatch. I was thinking exactly the same thing. You're not the only dork. :)
- ElHubcapo, on 09/16/2008, -2/+0Mmmmmm... strawberry liquorice.....
- abajaj2280, on 09/15/2008, -7/+5IT'S A HALO!
