NASA Photo of the Day: Aurora Persei

apod.nasa.gov — Dark skies are favored for viewing meteor showers -- so the best viewing of this year's Perseids will occur in the early morning. While the Perseid meteor shower is scheduled to peak over the next few days, bright light from a gibbous Moon will also flood the early evening and mask the majority of relatively faint meteors.

  • stmbtrtev, on 08/10/2008, -0/+0This photo was taken in Routt County, Colorado. I was living up there the night this was take and that night is one of the clearest intoxicated memories I have. In addition to the meteor shower and the Northern Lights display that night, there was also a brief lightning storm. Talk about amazing nature. And I can attest that the Lights were indeed that vivid that night.
