I would also point out that even the headline is wrong. The image is not a map of Gamma-Ray Bursts, but actually a map of the Gamma-ray sky, which is a very different thing. Most of the stuff on that map is from our own galaxy (apart from 3C454.3 and probably a few other blazars off the plane), Gamma-Ray bursts are all extra galactic (i.e. not from "across the Milky Way") and so fleeting in nature that they wouldn't show up in a map like this.
