- CourageousRobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+52After some searching, I managed to find the original *un-altered* image that the government doesn't want us to see:
http://www.opencircuits.net/phalien.jpg - geoffp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+52This is *obviously* giant, radioactive, spacefaring, superintelligent ninja-fruit from another dimension, and anyone who says otherwise is selling junk science.
See the tongue? - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+43This can only mean one thing...
Jesus is coming, act busy. - noswar45, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Look at us... bird of prey, star trek 4, hitchiker's guide and ninja's... I can hear the ladies banging down the door right now.
- Mattman723, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17I for one welcome our new orbiting pear-shaped overlord.
/I'm so sorry, I've never gotten to do that before. - grunherz5x5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15It's an uncalibrated image. It could be light refraction, a digital artifact ...
or an alien egg pod!
Occam's Razor ... save me! - TDot1980, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Whatever it is, it probably HATES FREEDOM and must be DESTROYED!
- Cander, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Our Humpback whales must be all dead. This is obviously the Whale aliens from Star Trek 4
- oakeybloke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Weebles orbit but they don't re-enter.
- reggiT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Hopefully a radioactive, spacefaring, superintelligent pirate-fruit from another dimension will save us!
- arpaagent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I'm pretty sure that this photograph has been overexposed...if you read the FAQ section on the page regarding many issues related to raw images, one of them states that in most pictures you cannot see stars because the exposure time is not long enough for them to become visible in the picture. They are clearly visible in this picture, which leads me to beleive that the rest of the picture is way overexposed, which is why this object (probably saturn's moon or whatever) looks extremely bright and distorted.
end of story. - nitsuj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I, for one, welcome our ... wait, this isn't slashdot...
- HarleyQuinn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Oh my god its XENU!!!!!
- domusvita, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"That's no pear. It's a space station." There. Said it. Bury away!!!!
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10It's pear shaped but looks like Mr. Potato Head?
- Hermitwise, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Perhaps a giant chunk of ice sent by kind aliens to cool down our oceans.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Did you get a load of those shades? The pear-thing looks so calm and serene floating out there. Or maybe he's just pissed.
- dannylewis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7No, no, no... the top of the object looks like one of those Easter Island statues.
- brhad56, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6giant, radioactive, spacefaring, superintelligent ninja-fruits from other dimensions are terrorists?
- geoffp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Well, the confusing thing is that Mr. Potato-Head is pear-shaped. Go figure!
- LtCarter47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wang! Pay attention!
- RabidNinja, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Hmm, perhaps Arthur C. Clarke was right...
- TheAnti, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Quickly, get into the Bird of Prey and swing around the sun to the past!!!
- OwdenBowden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Maybe it is L.Ron Hubbard coming back to save the world
- molsen311, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's obviously Rama
- slimer369, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It almost looks like a tiki head from Easter Island. Just the shape of the top and the dark areas look like eyes
- rprouse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Actually, I think it is the whale from the improbability drive in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. We were pretty lucky to catch it as it popped into existence then plunged towards Saturn...
- neave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4According to the description "The camera was pointing toward TETHYS...", and Tethys looks like this: http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/multimedia/images/raw/raw-images-details.cfm?feiImageID=76362 which isn't very pear-shaped. Or even potato-shaped.
The image is over-exposed and the big white bit at the bottom is just glare reflecting from the south of the moon. But it WOULD be much cooler if it was pear-shaped... - gaoshan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4As a professional photographer (photojournalist) I can guarantee you that that is so massively overexposed that it could be almost anything at all. Certainly not something to get worked up over.
- Drizzit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Heh just send in the Fruit *****
- aximbigfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it looks like a giant...
(cuts to control centere) captin i see something on the radar... it looks liek a large
you know the drill... - stosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3weather balloon
- cjdunn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Good one. "Rendezvous with Rama" was the first thing I thought of.
- gdfwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g1/gdfwilliams/raw-images-details_76730.jpg
- cjdunn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh dear, here comes the new interstellar bypass... and bad poetry. (Sigh).
- 60days, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Any confirmation that this actually is unknown? Since the camera was pointing towards Tethys, you would think it was, well, Tethys.
- jeaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dude, I believe the preferred nomenclature is "whalien".
- lefragileebouy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4damn, you beat me to it! i had a duck type monster complete with a mohawk and stripy socks all made up and everything :(
- dmron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Is there an associated story for this image? I dont see a link back to anything on that page.
- silent1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This just in: Chunk of matter found in space. News at 11.
- BritOverseas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Dude, I nearly blew chunks
Har Har - psbpv3o, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Its the Tralfamadorians!
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"This image has not been validated or calibrated. A validated/calibrated image will be archived with the NASA Planetary Data System in 2007."
As you can see, there is some transmission problems with that picture as well (notice missing areas). It can be pretty much anything, I don't understand why you guys think it's some special object. - iamtheratio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The truth is out there.
- sgreger1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Its time to kick pear shaped alien ass and chew bubble gum... and i'm all out of gum.
- sirius83, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's Darth Pear...contact the Jedi Council, quickly!
- Narrator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sorry earthlings, the aliens seem to think Saturn is much more interesting place than earth.
- Snyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sunglasses? I see big bushy eyebrows like the ones my granddad had, god rest his soul... Wait a second... Granddad?
- aprice2704, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OIC yes, it does look like a giant cylinder
- JoshuaWood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2According to Riley Martin, this is the spaceship that he was on with Tan.
