- blindhammer, on 02/19/2009, -6/+31Wouldn't it be awesome if we sent a manned mission to Mars and discovered that, under the soil, there existed a magical land filled with bunnies, cookies and hookers?
- StrangeFamous, on 02/19/2009, -1/+18QUAID... START THE REACTOR...
- Nintendesert, on 02/19/2009, -0/+14By forgoing pure research, technological advancement, dreaming of going to the stars and building craft, robots and the means to get there for the sake of focusing on "more important things" here on Earth, you absolutely condemn humanity to do exactly what you want to avoid.
- garryw, on 02/19/2009, -1/+11That's called Washignton DC
- BaoUnit, on 02/19/2009, -3/+11And ponies, rainbows, unicorns, and candy.
- inactive, on 02/19/2009, -0/+7I think we are going to find there is more water than they thought.
My theory is that it is locked in icecapped oceans hidden under a few feet of dirt....did you ever notice there are several areas that are suspiciously flat and level? - Gravey9, on 02/19/2009, -0/+6Wonder what it tastes like?
- grantmoore3d, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5Damn, I guess global warming is spreading faster than we thought....
- strictnein, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5Earth also has stable liquids.
Just because we're looking at Mars doesn't mean we're not also looking at Europa, Titan, etc. We can and are doing both... at the same time! NASA has more than 10 employees. - adiggityam, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5But it's really, really close.
- adiggityam, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5Yeah, but I think the word choice is meant to emphasize that it's not ice. The headlines for ice discoveries have been along the lines of 'Water on Mars?'
- entropysteak, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5ice and steam that isn't water also exists. also vapor = steam.
- inactive, on 02/19/2009, -3/+8and an unlimited supply of U.S. currency.
- MaxxusFlamus, on 02/19/2009, -0/+4you make it seem like we literally took $100,000,000 and fired it into space.
That money went somewhere. It goes to scientists, and engineers, and all the people involved in the program.
Exactly how do you suggest reinvigorating the economy if we just sit here and let the rest of the world pass us by? - TheInformer, on 02/19/2009, -1/+4"Emma, I told you to fix the sewage line Now those damn pesky humans have noticed us."
- Jektal, on 02/19/2009, -0/+3All of those are water. Just because it changes between a solid, liquid, and gas doesn't mean it becomes something new. If you melt some copper to pour it into a mold, that's still copper.
I'd put this in the category of "Basic science stuff lots of people get wrong for some odd reason", like thinking a scientific theory is the same as an wild idea. - Wargasmic, on 02/19/2009, -0/+3Steam can be made up of different substances, as can ice. Not all steam is from water, and not all ice is made from water.
- strib666, on 02/20/2009, -0/+2<Bender>
On second thought, forget the bunnies. And the cookies.
</Bender> - kraftj, on 02/20/2009, -0/+2I like turtles
- Jektal, on 02/19/2009, -1/+3@JRob0809: Good science-stuff is pedantic. And as pointed out above by adiggityam, most headlines/stories/conversations about water on Mars have been about it in ice/vapor form, so in this case it'd be more like talking about gaseous Sprite (the unnatural form of the substance given the context.)
- Wargasmic, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2Scientists like to follow the scientific method. That means they need evidence before declaring and assuming.
- kevine, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2Sigh, that's Venus you *****.
- blindhammer, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2Get your ass to Mars!
- slapthemonkey, on 02/20/2009, -0/+2Liquid water??
- oderdigg, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2Free your mind!!!!
- FXNGLAS, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2I was gonna ask the same thing.
- inactive, on 02/19/2009, -2/+4That's not the way science works. Scientists just don't go around "admitting" and declaring things without proof/data. Religion works that way though.
- adiggityam, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2I love you.
- krets, on 02/19/2009, -3/+51. "Mission Accomplished"
2. WMDs
3. FEMA and Katrina
Shall I go on? - AladinSane, on 02/19/2009, -3/+5"Liquid water"? As opposed to what? Solid water? We call that "ice". Gaseous water? That's "vapor", or maybe "steam". The only way you ever find "water" is in liquid state, because that's the name given to H2O when it's in a liquid form.
- mulock, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2How could NASA admit it is abundant when we havn't actually physically witnessed or detected it. Imagine they declare it is there, and then it isn't.... that would do little but fracture nasa's credibility.... Which has been attacked as the rise in conservative politics has happened.
- krets, on 02/19/2009, -1/+2Which question are you answering?
- adiggityam, on 02/19/2009, -3/+4What say the morning dew?
Settled on the dead red hue
of a brother lost, but not out of view.
Can we visit, old friend,
to share a drink?
Let slip the evening
into pink.
Tell me, tell me:
What would the hidden tadpoles think? - spo0oky, on 02/19/2009, -2/+3It's just the T-1000 putting itself back together again. Skynet really messed up the co-ordinates on that attempt.
- owlsley, on 02/19/2009, -3/+4Well I'm convinced. Let's fly out there today.
- inactive, on 02/19/2009, -1/+2not if i kept it a secret
- frostbyt, on 02/20/2009, -0/+1Trust me they are not going anywhere without us at the front.
- onionoino, on 02/19/2009, -1/+2it is just space fungus, deadly deadly space fungus.
- DoTheFandango, on 02/19/2009, -0/+1Hi, I'm a nitpicker. I find stupid things to argue about in people's posts.
- frostbyt, on 02/20/2009, -0/+1Bush had 8 years to fix it. I do remember the Clinton Years being the best economic years this country has ever had.
- Wander, on 02/19/2009, -0/+1Maybe you've never heard of FROZEN water?
- mulock, on 02/19/2009, -2/+2There is water on Mars. I have seen it - tasted it. There are many things humanity generally accepts as truth, that soon will be shattered.
Om nom nom nom - 1ncu3us, on 02/19/2009, -3/+3Why can't NASA just admit that life should and for all intensive purposes, IS abundant in the universe!!.. We are spoon fed this "new" information in tiny tidbits so that there's no shock to the masses and especially to religions... but COME ON!... this is ridiculous!.. humanity desperately needs a new perspective on itself and it's future as a species!.. we can handle the truth!
- inactive, on 02/19/2009, -1/+1"If you make the case that life could have started on Mars and could be hiding out somewhere," Tosca said, "it's not likely to be in this cold, salty water."
I'm certainly no expert but I do believe that there is a significant amount of life in the very cold, very salty, and very high pressure depths of the oceans, no? Just saying... Wish I could ask the guy to comment on that. - Wargasmic, on 02/19/2009, -1/+1Which is the default position....Lrn2skeptic
- ShimmyDigg, on 02/20/2009, -0/+0your post is just all wrong
- frostbyt, on 02/20/2009, -1/+1Sending someone to mars is not going to fix the problems here. Tell us, when you have a problem here do you just move to another house? Or do you face the problem, fix it, and move on?
- inactive, on 02/19/2009, -0/+0Chikn?
- flpunk, on 02/20/2009, -0/+0We have to look at Mars. it's the only way we'll ever discover Martians. The thought of Europans, titans and IOans just doesn't have the same ring.
- 1ncu3us, on 02/19/2009, -1/+1I'm saying they're keeping the evidence away from the general public, and only giving us the evidence/information when we're "ready" for it!
