Landing Sites on the Moon
time.com — Since the first lunar mission in 1959, more than 65 spacecraft have been launched to the Moon — some landed, some orbited and others brought back samples. Here's a closer look at the missions that have landed successfully on the near side of the Moon. Roll over the markers on the map for more on a given mission and to see its spacecraft.

- dullnation, on 05/12/2008, -0/+10You've been a member of digg since January and this is the best thing you can come out with?..
- Munden, on 05/12/2008, -2/+5I saw someone else do it in another thread that was off topic and they had a bunch of diggs. Clearly, animosity towards the RIAA isn't always appropriate.
- dullnation, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3Digg is fickle.

- rootsm3, on 05/12/2008, -23/+3it was a hoax!! we never landed on the moon! spread the word!!!
just kidding...pretty neat but the moon? old news i'd say haha- rootsm3, on 05/12/2008, -0/+5ooo tough crowd tough crowd
- mkay2008, on 05/12/2008, -31/+3Load of ***** *****
- thcobbs, on 05/12/2008, -5/+2Load of expensive ***** *****.
- JettaMan, on 05/12/2008, -1/+10You guys are seriously saying they didn't land on the moon? It takes a pretty low IQ to believe that.
- stevealford, on 05/12/2008, -23/+5Those landings were all faked. Buried as inaccurate. Everyone knows the moon doesn't really exist. SHEEP!
- stevealford, on 05/12/2008, -1/+1Is everyone's sarcasm detector broken? I thought for sure "the moon doesn't really exist" was a dead giveaway that I was joking...
- rideagain, on 05/12/2008, -0/+5who said no one got it? Maybe they just didn't find it funny.

- chanop, on 05/12/2008, -18/+71. Humans have never been on the moon
2. The moon is made of cheese
3. Mork went to the moon, before he came to earth - adml_shake, on 05/12/2008, -8/+15*waits for the army of tinfoils hats to come and tell us how silly we all are for believing the facts*
- chanop, on 05/12/2008, -1/+3Don't be fooled. The government is undergound....the tinfoil hat only acts as a parobolic dish for them to transfer their propaganda
- Spamcan, on 05/12/2008, -2/+10The landings were faked, but not for the reason most people believe. Space travel isn't accomplished by rocket power or any silly nonsense like that, instead the first successful human space launch happened in 1919 using a spherical pod and a gigantic slingshot. The first lunar colony was established in 1938 and today the moon has three colonial cities covered by large gray tents making them impossible to spot with a telescope. The landings were faked on the moon itself to stop people from discovering the truth. If the general population ever found out that you can breathe on the moon, there are cities up there and the apartments are rent controlled people would riot in the streets.
- sharkd, on 05/12/2008, -0/+6The real shocker is that everyone living on the moon has easy access to affordable healthcare that promotes preventative measures. Oh, and free astronaut ice cream every Tuesday.
- zadadka, on 05/12/2008, -2/+8No mention of Jules Verne's audacious venture...buried as inaccurate ;)
- MattFid, on 05/12/2008, -3/+13Where is the monolith we found in 2001?
- zadadka, on 05/12/2008, -5/+4That was 2010.
My username is based on the Russian name for the obelisk (enigma), as mentioned in the book.- MattFid, on 05/12/2008, -2/+3It was in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. It was a great documentary. Here is a photo from the shoot. http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1082497024/tt0062622
- IphtashuFitz, on 05/12/2008, -0/+7Actually the monolith on the moon was found, in the movie at least, in 1999. It was 18 months later, in 2001, when the majority of the movie/book takes place.
- rac1234, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Now we have to wait another millennium for more years with cool names.
- pushmouse, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3Tyco crater was where the monolith was found.
- zadadka, on 05/12/2008, -5/+4That was 2010.
- cmuwriter, on 05/12/2008, -0/+14"We've landed on the moon!" Over the weekend I watched the BBC documentary called "In the Shadow of the Moon." It was very good, and it made me realize how freaking sweet it would be to actually get to go on a moon mission.
- STKD, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4An excellent documentary, available on DVD and HD-DVD with around an hour or so of extra interviews and footage that is well worth the purchase.
- cmuwriter, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Some of that footage was just amazing in the movie. My only complaint was the fact that the text on screen, which narrated the film, was too small.
- tushyd, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1It wasn't the BBC, it was THINKfilms

- roxics, on 05/12/2008, -6/+3Moons are such silly things.
- element444, on 05/12/2008, -5/+6If the moon was made of spare ribs would you eat it?
- Balks, on 05/12/2008, -3/+1I know I would! Hyuk Hyuk Hyuk ^^
- JeffreyLloyd, on 05/12/2008, -0/+9It's always fascinating to see exactly where all these historic events happened on the moon!
- KyleRayner, on 05/12/2008, -8/+13The moon was an inside job! What happened to Lunar Base 7? WAKE UP SHEEPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- g00dbye, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Dugg for "Sheeple".
- JeffreyLloyd, on 05/12/2008, -0/+13http://www.google.com/moon/
Make sure you zoom way it, you can see footprints!- MacParrot, on 05/12/2008, -2/+2Pics or it didn't...oh, never mind
- jjustice, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1"Did I hear footsteps?"
- summercrush, on 05/12/2008, -4/+0anyone want to see my moon?
- borez, on 05/12/2008, -7/+5I'm really looking forward to the day that another country goes to the moon and flies past those sites taking pictures.
/did or didn't it happen- rideagain, on 05/12/2008, -1/+5Other countries have already verified that both the US and the then-USSR landed on the moon: see the Lunar Ranging Experiment at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_Laser_Ranging_E ... . That page explicitly mentions that France was able to participate in the experiment (and I would expect many other countries did).
- borez, on 05/12/2008, -3/+2That could've been dropped by any number of probes predating the Apollo missions. It's not proof man actually got there.
All I want is actual third party photos of the spots were the USA claims to have landed.- rideagain, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Well, these spots could have stuff left by probes, too. And the lunar rocks we got back could have been brought by probes as well. It's just not very likely now, is it?
- insonh, on 05/12/2008, -1/+3the Titanic never existed either
everyone knows every picture or film done on it was done in a big water tank at universal studios.
same for WW2
Never happened just smoke and mirrors
and no one ever climed Mt Everest

- Barakolypse, on 05/12/2008, -2/+5That's not a moon, thats a space station.
- 0011002, on 05/12/2008, -2/+1you tried to hard
- Andrevan, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1http://www.lunarrover.org/
- Zippo, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3When you look at this, and then look at what we know about space, you realize just how little of our universe, or even our solar system, we've seen... Sure, we've sent a ton of probes and rovers to our solar neighbors... but as far as manned missions go, we've still got a long way to go.
Also kind of sad that we haven't stepped foot on another moon or planet in over 30 years. - edebolt, on 05/12/2008, -3/+2wait I thought the moon landing was a hoax. Aren't all the moon exploration photos just shot at Area 51. Come on people wake up..... it's a grand conspiracy designed to get you to buy more fast food and watch tv.
- glowfood, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Why can't I find these photos the Lunas took?
- PDF84, on 05/12/2008, -3/+1Didnt know the moon sound stage was that big
- insonh, on 05/12/2008, -6/+412 men walked on the moon
all Americans
when China finally get there they will remove all the evidence that we got there first and claim they were the first to land on the moon
and the leftards here will go along with it 100%- sharkd, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3Wow. I never thought I'd see a NEW moon landing conspiracy theory.
- thescimitar, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2Was that a pro-NASA right wing conspiracy rant about China on the MOON?
You, sir, have won the internets. - britoca, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1lol, that was awesome
- jlcotton1968, on 05/12/2008, -4/+1The Van Allen Radiation Belts- nuff said sheeple.
- britoca, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2balls of steel and a drive to actually risk yourself to go there. Enough said as well.
- rockefeller2, on 05/12/2008, -3/+2*****, all I want to see are pictures taken from earth of objects on the moon. Then I won't have any doubts US astronauts landed on the moon. Camera, or Telescope technology can not do this?
- britoca, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3not yet, no telescope has such a resolution.
- rockefeller2, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1How about satellites that orbit the moon? We have satellites that orbit the earth that can take high res pictures of vehicles and equipment. Why not the moon?
- PigGeneral, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1No orbiting telescope has a low enough sensitivity that it wouldn't damage its optics if it points at an object as bright as the moon.
- britoca, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3not yet, no telescope has such a resolution.
- 0011002, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1The moon has been ignored for to long. It could be such a good stepping stone for further exploration and at the same time cut down on the cost of launching new probes. Could you imagine mining the moon and building the actual space craft there where there is a much lower gravitational pull?
- hlcno, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Still no pictures of any landers.. sup?
- ianhl, on 05/12/2008, -1/+4I must have been sleeping for 10 years. I thought the first moon mission was in 1969.
- britoca, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2first humans to land on the moon, yes
- Moonman13, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2I would like to go to an observatory and view the original moon landing.
- tushyd, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1I read somewhere that they left reflectors on the moon, if you had a powerful enough laser (and the money to buy one) you could theoretically reflect your beam
- jlcotton1968, on 05/12/2008, -4/+1Think about it. Come on now, just think about it. The space shuttle, that has exponentially more advanced technology than that little LM, HAS NEVER BEEN MORE THAN 300 MILES ABOVE EARTHS ATMOSPHERE. Are people really the ***** stupid???
I guess so.- tushyd, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3The shuttle wasn't designed to go out to the moon. The Apollo LM were.
- jlcotton1968, on 05/12/2008, -0/+0Ok.
- tushyd, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3The shuttle wasn't designed to go out to the moon. The Apollo LM were.
- britoca, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1dugg, dugg, dugg, anything moon-related i shall digg
- Whoopteedoo, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1Bunch of crap. We've never been to the moon.
- neonsox, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1I suspect the only people that really know if we went to the moon or not are... THE HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THE MISSIONS! Don't you naysayers think somebody would have spilled the beans by now? Money talks.
