- br00n0, on 01/29/2008, -8/+296After him! Xenu's running away!
- meshman, on 01/29/2008, -6/+288Yeah, it realized there were humans in this one and ran screaming into the cosmos.
- expo1001, on 01/29/2008, -1/+244I for one propose we build some kind of border fence around our galaxy to protect ourselves from these illegal alien stars.
- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -3/+148"only 35 million years old"
Such a young pup..... - RealmDown, on 01/29/2008, -21/+126When I read the headline, I thought this was about Brittany Spears.
- sockpuppets, on 01/29/2008, -6/+80..but in space, no one can hear you scream.
- Moshcrates, on 01/29/2008, -8/+71While the article is a very interesting read, the title seems to be mildly misleading
- gkiltz, on 01/29/2008, -5/+60As long as he's a LEGAL alien, what's the problem?
- repairman2003, on 01/29/2008, -7/+61Alien as in not from our galaxy, not alien life form. But I do agree that the title is bs and misleading
- TinPig, on 01/29/2008, -0/+46ejected from the galaxy... man, that's harsh....
- Sornos, on 01/29/2008, -2/+46Look at it is this way. We know stars and the motions pretty good. Now imagine your observing people tossing a few baseballs around. Nothing out of the ordinary, and easy to track. Suddenly, a baseball comes flying out of nowhere. Where do you think it came from? Did someone else throw it, because it sure doesn't look like your baseballs? Or are you a liar for supposing someone else threw, because you didn't see that person throw it?
- ryan83189, on 01/29/2008, -2/+42But they do the jobs our sun won't do.
- tylerwest70, on 01/29/2008, -2/+34Your username makes this comment all the more funny
- justok, on 01/29/2008, -2/+26and a good fart can affect your delta v
- MorbenDK, on 01/29/2008, -2/+24Xenu? please.. that is clearly a Spirit Bomb.
- tattertech, on 01/29/2008, -4/+26Wow... It's really not that hard to figure out. In fact, the headline actually pretty accurately tells you the point of the article.
- Samsong, on 01/29/2008, -9/+31You = Stupid
- techeric, on 01/29/2008, -2/+23Alien: "stranger: anyone who does not belong in the environment in which they are found"
- sl9sl9, on 01/29/2008, -3/+20Who is to say that the star is not completely stationary, and it is us in the Milky Way, that are speeding away from this star at huge speeds? Relativity FTW!
- bjornski, on 01/29/2008, -0/+16I, for one, am tired of people telling other people how to play with their memes.
- resplence, on 01/29/2008, -0/+16Like getting jokes.
- alkajazz, on 01/29/2008, -0/+15That doesnt look like a dc-9 intergalatic space cruiser.
- h3lx, on 01/29/2008, -1/+16It's paramount to use 'for one' to make it sound exemplary. The "I propose" simply states it as an individual, but when you tag the "for one" onto it, it implies he is one of a much larger group of like minded individuals with a similar purpose or goal. Politicians do this ***** all the time. Surprised you didn't pick up on it. The issue is the lack of dramatic pauses... a couple of commas could really set that sentence off! In sum, the "for one" acts like 'Hamburger Helper' to complete unadulterated, undeniable *****.
- TheShom, on 01/29/2008, -16/+30Damn, when it said "Alien" i thought it was about actual aliens.
... -_-
C'mon, u guys thought the same thing too!!! - fluxion, on 01/29/2008, -0/+13a star 9 times the mass of our sun flying through the universe at 1.6 million mph. that's pretty sweet. hopefully it's not headed for an inhabited planet. ouch!
- krebcycle, on 01/29/2008, -0/+13In Soviet Russia memes play with you.
- pardonmedoug, on 01/29/2008, -8/+21I like turtles
- Nevarius, on 01/29/2008, -0/+13Think of it as a sling shot effect
- RedRummy, on 01/29/2008, -2/+14That "artists impression" is classic!! Airbrush Tool FTW!
- Kerrigore, on 01/29/2008, -2/+14Exactly. I can't believe these "scientists" missed the most obvious explanation: God is messing with us.
- MorbenDK, on 01/29/2008, -0/+12Alien is a relative term. from the right perspective, any star that is not our sun, is alien.
- SSUK, on 01/29/2008, -1/+12I did, but then I quickly realised in what context "alien" was being used and thought nothing of it.
- ieataquacrayons, on 01/29/2008, -0/+10Just like my ex-girlfriend....
- yeti22, on 01/29/2008, -1/+11It's not a matter of "they had no f'ing clue", it's that the team that discovered the star didn't have precise enough techniques to determine the composition, and therefore the galactic origin, of the star. They put forward a couple reasonable hypotheses to explain how a star of its age got to where it was, going as fast as it did.
The second team (the one the article is about) set out to make a better measurement of the star's composition. They came up with a new technique for doing this, and were able to confirm that the star's composition is consistent with its coming from the Large Magellanic Cloud. One hypothesis refuted (the "blue straggler"), one confirmed. Now, there's a new, better hypothesis that predicts that there is a supermassive black hole in the LMC (this is necessary to fully explain the star's speed). Other scientists will set out to find this black hole, and they either will or they won't. And so on. That's how science works.
So, in short, the team that discovered the star couldn't be sure where the star came from, but they did have a ***** clue. Someone else picked up on that clue and ran with it, and found more clues in the process. - directive0, on 01/29/2008, -4/+14Both of you please STFU.
- russ3, on 01/29/2008, -1/+11But no one wants to.
- johnnick, on 01/29/2008, -0/+9Maybe I'm not sufficiently imaginative, but I interpreted the headline to mean exactly what it was - that the star came from somewhere else.
- Tippis, on 01/29/2008, -1/+10Well, that solves the mystery. Someone gave it too many sweets before bedtime.
- RealmDown, on 01/29/2008, -4/+13Don't worry, it'll all make sense soon. Here -- have another cup of kool-aid.
- krebcycle, on 01/29/2008, -0/+9He doesn't trust stuff that people figure out with that unpredictable method, "math".
- UnstableMind, on 01/29/2008, -0/+8TEH STARZ HATE OUR FREEDUMZ!
- octophobic, on 01/29/2008, -0/+8"...have determined that it came from our neighboring galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC)."
It's in the first paragraph! It's even in larger print than the rest of the article making it that much easier to spot. - bjornski, on 01/29/2008, -0/+8Send a probe!
- nVoy, on 01/29/2008, -0/+8I LOL'D.
- drakenlot, on 01/29/2008, -1/+9Then that's a case of over-active imaginations.
- Kerrigore, on 01/29/2008, -1/+9Well, you're in luck, because it's turtles all the way down.
- Tippis, on 01/29/2008, -1/+9Bah, he's speeding, so obviously he doesn't know how we do things around here...
- xmrkkr, on 01/29/2008, -1/+9yea, Dinosaurs walked this rock long back.
