- ghanes14, on 08/24/2008, -1/+24This is cool, I like reading stuff like this. I find it interesting how they can tell the temperature of something so far away, the article says 230 million light years away!
I had to look it up, but light travels about 186,282 miles per second (yeah outrun that). There are 31,536,000 seconds in a 365 day year. If you multiply that together you get about 5,874,589,152,000 miles light would travel per year in a straight line!
Now if you REALLY wanna get into it, multiply 5,874,589,152,000 miles a year by 230,000,000 (light years away) and you have the distance to that image: 1,351,155,504,960,000,000,000 miles away (eh estimated anyways). I can't believe they can see something so far, let alone tell how hot it is, pretty cool!
If anyone is wonder, a number with 21 numbers behind it is called a Sextillion, so NGC 1275 is over 1.3 sextillion miles away :). - vawksel, on 08/25/2008, -1/+19It also means this image is 230 million years old.
It may not even be there anymore.
We seriously need to figure out FTL travel.

- mohsenxp, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5Here's another cool thing about space.
Travelling through an asteroid belt, you'll probably never see a single asteroid! Unlike what hollywood depicts. Not cool! - LongJohnSilvers, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5The universe never ceases to amaze me.

Not completely. Light is not immune to gravitational forces. A strong gravitational force can bend light, and when this is magnified over many millions of miles, and is affected by a plethora of gravitational anomalies, things get more complicated. Only THEN can we factor in all of the solid materials that a single photon must avoid in order to reach our telescopes; ie. this is truly magnificent. For more on gravity bending light, see 'Einstein Rings':

- QuixoticNoob, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3I always knew he was watching over us
- GothAlice, on 08/25/2008, -2/+5Rule of thumb: if something doesn't get in the way, a photon will just keep going. Not really as impressive as you think. (Space is vastly empty, thus nothing to get in the way.)
- neocr0n, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3It's a shame there is pretty much no chance of me being around at a time when Humans can start to fully explore space. I envy the future generations that might some day travel to distant galaxies.
- vawksel, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2@vawksel (myself)
I forgot, Gravity doesn't effect mass, it effects the space-time fabric which then changes the path in which matter or anything for that matter will travel on.
Doh. - mohsenxp, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2I hope not.
It takes one arrogant mofo to say the universe is not amazing. - inactive, on 08/25/2008, -1/+3raaaaaaaah men!
- yourmanstan, on 08/25/2008, -1/+2that would be a decent desktop wallpaper
- mohsenxp, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1^just that they are spaced out so much that the chances of bumping into one is pretty much zero.
- vawksel, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1Why, spaceships aren't allowed to have headlights on them?

- vawksel, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1It is amazing that gravity can affect something that has no mass.

- Dante001, on 09/05/2008, -0/+0Its pictures like this that make you and all that you think is important seem decidedly insignificant.
- Culero, on 08/25/2008, -1/+1I always think Space pics would be great as desktops...but then...they never feel right.

HUNH - smegmaslough, on 08/25/2008, -2/+0I'm not sure I would say that this is a monster. I mean, nothing monster-like in the traditional sense can be seen here.
- wontstoptalking, on 08/25/2008, -3/+1This picture is filling my lungs with a kind of innovativeness they've never felt before. I am going to digg this. In fact, I AM going to digg this.
