- thegamingguy, on 09/06/2008, -0/+29I couldn't imagine much more risky than being out in space, outside of the spaceship, working on old machinery.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -0/+27Reminds me of the dreams I had as a child of being an astronaut.
Then I saw Apollo 13 and said ***** that, paleontology is next up on my list!
Then Jurassic Park came out... etc etc. - LucasVB, on 09/07/2008, -2/+27Good content = dugg

- trogdor282, on 09/07/2008, -0/+12I think NASA says there's a 1 in 12 chance that another shuttle will blow up. So, only half as risky as russian roulette.

Meme senses are tingling... - AlphaFreak, on 09/07/2008, -0/+8Not enough resolution.
Take a look at:
http://www.nasa.gov/vision/universe/solarsystem/hu ... - ben_nushmut, on 09/07/2008, -1/+7not to burst your bubble, but Apollo 13 came out in '95 and Jurassic Park came out in '93.
- Wamzlee, on 09/07/2008, -0/+6Ouch....that was a burn.
- aptanalogy, on 09/07/2008, -0/+6Even if they could image an Apollo site in enough detail to resolve the descent stage, those people would just claim that the government fabricated the photos.
- Yetisquatch, on 09/07/2008, -0/+6you underestimate my imagination.
- superfuxxorr, on 09/07/2008, -0/+5Mainly because when NASA launches the James Webb Space Telescope in 2013 Hubble will seem like a toy. http://www.jwst.nasa.gov/
- insertcleverid, on 09/07/2008, -0/+5Dugg just for the soundtrack. If NASA can make geeks sound exciting then they can probably do anything.:)
- spacester, on 09/07/2008, -0/+5JWST will be awesome, but it will have NO observation instruments working in the visible spectrum. Some will argue that the small band of EMR from UV to Infra-red is 'just a small portion of the overall spectrum', which is of course true. But that doesn't mean that the visible spectrum is unimportant. There is important science to be done in that spectrum, and IMO NASA's obligation to the Public includes providing real-life imaging along with all the (beautiful and important) computer-generated displays of data.
- mrsammercer, on 09/07/2008, -0/+5Why did they article say they can't go back to Hubble ? Monetary constraints? Or are we sending it out of our orbit?
- Scaryclouds, on 09/07/2008, -2/+6Dugg for Jerry Bruckheimer esq. soundtrack and astronaut giving the thumbs up.
- Shaggy3, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4More advanced cameras.. God is going to be PISSED.
- nathanww, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3As I recall, Hubble is so sensitive that pointing it at the earth or the moon would wreck its sensors,
- vuzman, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3Jerry Bruckheimer Esquire?
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -1/+4This is not risky because it's specially dangerous (although it is, since they are going to be more exposed than normally). This is risky because if it goes wrong, it is one shot only and Hubble may not live for another 10 years.
In other words, RTFA. - Tomholius, on 09/07/2008, -3/+6Wow that sounds slightly complicated, so complicated that I ***** bricks.
and for good measure there is always room for: ***** THE CRIA! - JorgeGT, on 09/07/2008, -1/+4Gladstone from Hate by Numbers would have a field day with the Hollywood editing of this video and how middle aged NASA managers have to look like CIA operatives xD
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -6/+9Risky? I thought the Hubble Telescope was in space not in Detroit.
- tomz17, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3AlphaFreak is correct... the Hubble primary is too small to ever resolve a landing site on the moon (google diffraction limit to learn more about the physics involved).
- LeviTheSmith, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3Hey I know that solar system
- takeo1775, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3*hopes for higher resolution desktops*
- spacester, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3Good article, but another example of where spell-checking is no substitute for knowledge of the subject.
"Space Telescope Imagine Spectrograph (STIS)"
'Imaging', not 'Imagine'
"Wield Field Camera 3"
'Wide', not Wield
"Ten times better"
By what measure? - jimmyp80, on 09/07/2008, -0/+2Why is this more risky than usual? I thought the purpose of this was to tell me.
- s4g4n, on 09/07/2008, -0/+2If anything its the editor who added action-like movie music.
- palehorse864, on 09/07/2008, -1/+3I thought MIke Nelson killed this thing back when the MST3K movie came out.
- marillion, on 09/07/2008, -0/+2Because the shuttle program has already started spinning down. The remaining flights have all been booked.
- rdolishny, on 09/07/2008, -0/+2I was thinking the same thing. I guess Jerry B had some time on his hands. I was waiting for Bruce Willis to come in and flip the switch.
Sha-bam! - kd1s, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1I think it's fantastic that Hubble is getting upgraded again. Our first orbiting telescope has brought us stunning views of the universe around us.
Sure it has some false starts but it just keeps going and going. The other thing is I note the capture adapter to de-orbit. You wouldn't care about de-orbit if you didn't intend to put that baby in a museum where we can all oggle the several decades old technology that gave us our first clear view of the cosmos. - ChinezePanda, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1If I was an astronaut... and in the name of science told to go repair and upgrade Hubble... the greatest telescope and scientific instrument mankind has ever conceived... It would be an honor... If I somehow was killed doing it... It would be an instrument worth dying for.
Hubble carries the weight of all scientific research of the Universe.. I can only imagine what is going to be put up once Hubble's life comes to an end. - Kinsbane, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1Here's hoping all the fixes go smoothly and the Hubble will continue providing us the secrets of space for the next ten years.
- cornerback42, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1Then you havent been to Cleveland on a Saturday night in the flats.
- cyberalpha, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1I can't wait for more breathatking images from Hubble! :)
- RobotCitizen, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1I had no idea HST was getting such an extensive overhaul. Only thing missing is Xibit and the Pimp My Ride camera crew.
- Merp08, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1Damn. I wonder if they'll actually be able to pull this off. I really hope so. They are kind of screwed if they mess up.
Godspeed to those brave Astronauts.... Dying out there were ***** suck. - inactive, on 09/07/2008, -3/+3• They also are going to install a refurbished fine guidance sensor.
You'd think, given the time and expense, they could have ponied up for a new one. Now is not the time to be rooting around the spares bin looking for that certain part. - thrillki1l, on 09/07/2008, -2/+2I have always wondered one thing. why in the hell don't they just point the hubble at the moon and take a picture of the Apollo 11 landing sight and prove to all those crazy people that think we didn't land on the moon that they're wrong.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -2/+2I am burying this cause of babyman
- VIJoe, on 09/07/2008, -10/+5Space+People=Dangerous=Not News
- BobTheChainsaw, on 09/06/2008, -51/+3MrBabyMan = buried.
