- BigManOnCampus, on 03/09/2008, -0/+21I would do this.
- Flashman, on 03/09/2008, -0/+14I support the idea. History is replete with explorers who left everything behind and took enormous risks. Marco Polo left his home for decades. Polynesian sailors crewed rafts to distant unknown islands and started new societies. I like the idea of slowly building a colony on another planet and getting the world behind a project of unprecedented ambition.
- W00DR0W, on 03/09/2008, -0/+9Appendicitis? Come on.
Infection? It'd be pretty easy to sterilize you and the craft with endospore-killing disinfectants, so I don't think you could get infection if you wanted to.
And cancer... well cancer's a bitch, I'll give you that. - BigManOnCampus, on 03/09/2008, -0/+8I think that's the idea. If I went on such a mission, I wouldn't expect to survive, but I'd still want to go.
- Chaoticfist, on 03/09/2008, -0/+8I would go, even knowing it was a one way trip. What better way to go then ***** dieing on mars? I am sure they would send supplies and other people.. Also if they made it a two person deal then at least you would have company.
- jimmick, on 03/09/2008, -0/+7That would be the greatest thing anyone could ever do. Being the first person on Mars. Holy *****, sign me up
- fkr3, on 03/09/2008, -0/+7"Mars rover reveals bored man's ass to the world"
- inactive, on 03/09/2008, -0/+6I think a team of people willing to die, even if they all have cancer, to support each other emotionally.
Moral is important. - diggface5000, on 03/09/2008, -1/+6if you were running the show we wouldn't have went to the moon either.. go back in your bubble
- inactive, on 03/09/2008, -1/+6Imagine how ***** lonely you'd get. I would at least want a freind, to speak with and discuss my final days.
A female freind. ;D - W00DR0W, on 03/09/2008, -0/+4You know it's creepy enough you'd think you were going on a suicide mission from the get-go, but wanting to take someone along with you on this suicide mission is even creepier.
- betawarrior, on 03/09/2008, -0/+4You would go insane if you were alone on mars for the rest of your life
You would go insane if you were on mars with a woman for the rest of your life
Needs at least 100 ppl - diggface5000, on 03/09/2008, -0/+4A one-way trip wouldn't have to be suicide. I'm sure we'd send supply ships before and after and more people as we work out the kinks in the flight. Plus he/she'd have the rovers to keep them company.
- frogman54, on 03/09/2008, -1/+5My friend always told me it was stupid to think of 5 books you'd want if you were stranded on a desert island. Well...if I go to Mars, I'm going to be finding Waldo like crazy...and if he goes to Mars...he's screwed.
- inactive, on 03/09/2008, -4/+7I am always up for a cosmic trip!!
- inactive, on 03/09/2008, -0/+3Yeah, he's really not that funny. But...
"People and fish can co-exist peacefully" was a good one. - inactive, on 03/09/2008, -0/+3What? And lose the greatest comedian of our time?
- zephyear, on 03/09/2008, -0/+3it's an amazing accomplishment and paves the way for colonization of space.
a 1 planet species won't be able to survive for millions of years.
that. and it gets people interested in space. - johndi, on 03/09/2008, -1/+4Here's a secret for you. All people die.
- crash013, on 03/09/2008, -1/+3Yarr me mateys, time to fetch some pirate booty ya scurvy dogs.
- BigManOnCampus, on 03/10/2008, -0/+2Well, you're surviving responding to posts on Digg, I think I could survive on Mars.
- inactive, on 03/09/2008, -0/+2LIAR!!! Was a rick roll, this is a proper video of bush making an ass of himself:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2b1D5w82yU - BigManOnCampus, on 03/10/2008, -0/+2Remember though, they can always send you new stuff over downloads. The problem is they can't send you a new hard drive.
- ineptsavant, on 03/09/2008, -1/+3I think a country where it being a two way trip is not so important will probably get to mars first. A country like china will poor a ton of money into the mission and get lots of voulunteers even if the mission is likely to me one way only. As a citizen of the USA I'd like to see us get there first, but the beuracratic BS, redtape, and funds required, aren't likely to be met in our present science disinterested society.
- searcade, on 03/09/2008, -1/+3i would do this if you give me a girl :(
- justinx0r, on 03/09/2008, -0/+2You're an idiot.
- inactive, on 03/09/2008, -0/+2Comedian? Your a ***** moron mate. He just says stupud *****.
Anyway, he'd just double back and fly into Iraq or Iran or something. - inactive, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1I disagree, he'd find a way to stuff it up. $10 says he winds up on Io.
"I was trying to find and Hal and send him home. No one gets left behind" - macwac, on 03/09/2008, -2/+3Darn it you beat me to it!
- cerealjynx, on 03/09/2008, -1/+2How about a realdoll? ...Fleshlight?
- inactive, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1A bit longer but this is much better, 10min tho, just skip the first minute
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whhbPVrb5KM - Biks, on 03/09/2008, -1/+2So...we would be getting news reports on CNN: "MARS ASTRONAUT ALMOST DEAD!" There seems to be a whole bunch of touchy-feely type of people on this planet whose panties would get in a twist. Not that I'm against the idea.
- betawarrior, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1http://digg.com/general_sciences/One_way_trip_to_M ...
last year folks
maybe if i went to mars for a bit Digg would get some new stories when i got back.... - moneyswears, on 03/09/2008, -1/+2I would not do this.
- inactive, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1Check this out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moutUEfqUQ4
Not a rick roll. - HolyMan28, on 03/09/2008, -1/+2Sign me up.
- darlingt, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1*cough* Catch-22, anyone? *cough*
- Shogi, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1A manned expedition to Mars is rather pointless right now. It would have little to no benefit to us, at least no more than sending rovers at a fraction of the cost. Until we have a solid plan to terraform Mars, there's no reason to go aside from appeasing the masses. For the cost of one ultimately pointless trip to Mars, we could probably fund and launch multiple deep-space probes to explore other planets/moons like Europa, Callisto, Uranus, etc, and beyond the bounds of our Solar System.
THAT is what we need to focus on. The more of space we observe, the more advances we make in physics and chemistry, which even in the short term will be more beneficial than a trip to Mars. - blast_flame, on 03/09/2008, -2/+3Good idea but I don't think you'll be able to sell a one way trip. A much better way to present it would be to call it a "thirty year trip" and saying thirty years, after all those technological advancements we'll get him home. Of course by then a complication will probably have happened and he'll be dead but it'll be much easier to sell.
- wooFmeoWoinK, on 03/09/2008, -2/+3why do we need to send a person to mars? people get fixated on the idea of manned space flight, when in reality unmanned space flight is far less expensive and gives us just as much usable data.
- mrloco, on 03/09/2008, -1/+2As long as i can hotbox the space capsule, i'm in.
- croush1211, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1Not it! (Although I do think the idea of space colonies is cool.)
- inactive, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1With a single explorer, it won't take much of a mishap to wipe out the expedition.
- GramarNatzi, on 03/09/2008, -1/+2Me too, as long as they sent me with a lifetime's worth of porn.
- chip420, on 03/09/2008, -4/+4I nominate John McCain.
- pmace, on 03/09/2008, -1/+1Give him a female robot... ever see "The Lonely" Twilight Zone episode?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lonely_(The_Twili ... - inactive, on 03/09/2008, -1/+1Why not send Bush? If MuletThe Great is willing to send a chimp, that's pretty much the same thing anyway.
- Shogi, on 03/09/2008, -1/+1Personally I'd rather the hail of gunfire than ultimate solitude.
- plup, on 03/09/2008, -0/+0No.
- inactive, on 03/09/2008, -1/+1Hmm.. I reckon we send someone smart enough to navigate the ship. Like a chimp. or a something branded Intel
