- spdorsey, on 04/18/2008, -0/+9There's no mention of the James Lick observatory in San Jose, CA!

Epic fail. - almostspastic, on 04/18/2008, -0/+5One day I will have visited them all.
- BQ27, on 04/18/2008, -0/+5Cool, I live near Mt. Wilson.. In fact I saw it from the desert last weekend. Must go visit :)
- rblancarte, on 04/18/2008, -0/+4The photo gallery is ok, but misses most of the telescopes from the actual article - Ten great observatories in the West:
http://www.chicagotribune.com/travel/la-trw-telesc ... (no formatting)
The 10 were (not they said great not Best):
Mount Wilson Observatory
Big Bear Solar Observatory
Griffith Park Observatory
Lowell Observatory
Lick Observatory
Kitt Peak Observatory
McDonald Observatory
Mount Graham International Observatory
Jack C. Davis Observatory
Goldendale Observatory. - spdorsey, on 04/18/2008, -0/+3There are "star partys" on top of Fremont Peak in Monterey county. They take place on new moon weekends each month. Amateur stronomers get together and gaze at the heavens. Quite a show, really.
There is also a 30" telescope that opens up to the public. I saw the sombrero galaxy through it, WOW!!!
http://www.fpoa.net/tips.html - inactive, on 04/18/2008, -0/+3This is better then all of those http://uploadingit.com/view/541751_sfqmm
- majordanger, on 04/18/2008, -1/+4There are mountain top scopes..uh..Got any mountain tops?
- tidu, on 04/18/2008, -0/+3omg, did you see him there???
- spdorsey, on 04/18/2008, -0/+3I must say - Griffith park?
Its that really considered a great observatory? It's really just a movie set now, isn't it? - gkwillie, on 04/18/2008, -1/+3Dugg down for not including Palomar, which in almost every respect is better then any of these. Hubble used it to confirm the theory of other galaxies and universal expansion, the use of type 1A supernovas to determine distances was also perfected and the damn thing was built partly during the depression by CalTech, of all places.
Not to mention the fact that the 200 inch mirror is one of the largest single pieces of Pyrex glass ever cast and engineered to optical precision, and then the mirror was retrofitted with adaptive optics 70 years after it was cast.
In other words, epic fail - inactive, on 04/18/2008, -1/+3Thanks for all the support, everyone. Once I saw this gallery I knew it was Digg-worthy!
- twertyto, on 04/18/2008, -0/+2Most of these were made in the early part of the 20th century. During that time there was not much development in the West and so dark skies were a plenty. East doesn't have many observatory due to the fact that light polluion was significant factor back then.
- inactive, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1Thanks, guys!
- skeen07, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1Just to go Soviet Russia. :)
- spdorsey, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1I drove up there last weekend. Awesome telescope!

- spdorsey, on 04/18/2008, -1/+2I totally agree.
- spdorsey, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1ColnelTribune? Are you associated with the paper?
If so, why aren't there pics of the Lick and the Palomar? Just curious.
------S - fishbulb95, on 04/19/2008, -0/+1I live in San Jose, it's so fun to go up there the view is absolutely stunning.
- Chris63084, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Am I the only one that thought this was a monument to the great droid, R2D2?
- proliance, on 04/19/2008, -0/+1"The Alvan Clark 24-inch refracting telescope is so powerful that it was used at the turn of the century to look for life on Mars."
We were still looking for little green men in 2000? - meeks82, on 04/20/2008, -0/+1Buried for leaving out McDonald Observatory in Jeff Davis County, Texas: the best observatory in North America.
- meeks82, on 04/20/2008, -0/+1Dugg down for misspelling and not capitalizing 'buried' and for unnecessary capitalization of 'no'. The 'check spelling' button can be useful. ;)
- drcreek, on 04/19/2008, -1/+1berried for No Greenwich Royal Observatory. Probably the most important in the world at one point. has lasers and everything. It's the reason with have time zones.
