Discovery of gamma rays from the edge of a black hole!
eurekalert.org — The astrophysicists of the international H.E.S.S. collaboration report the discovery of fast variability in very-high-energy gamma rays from the giant elliptical galaxy M 87. The detection of these gamma-ray photons - with energies more than a million million times the energy of visible light from one of the most famous extragalactic objects.

Previously, it was thought that the gamma rays could have originated from any one (or more) of many potential sites.

My professor talks like everything about the science is true, but then he goes into examples of how astronomers keep changing what they think is real. I'll talk to him on Tuesday about this discovery.

In this case, new evidence of the source of gamma-rays confirms the existing theory of a super-massive black hole in M87.
