- vroom101, on 10/11/2007, -5/+35The Hubble Space Telescope is still alive and sending us stunning images.
- orientis, on 10/11/2007, -4/+29Yeah but it's on the internet which was created by Al Gore.

I hope you mean "successor" - AstroSnail, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22While the Hubble telescope is still in orbit, the ACS camera (the one that has been taking all the amazing pictures) is broken.

- NSMike, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16So, a year's worth of work, specifically for Kevin Rose, and he didn't prepare the site for the digg effect?
- ChronicColonic, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16Defiantly? Ah, so no one is going to tell you where or when you can look at the website! Good for you! The Assertiveness Training class has paid off nicely.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -8/+21I bet this guy probably beats off to pictures of kevin rose.
- naio, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17What a Kevin ballwasher! :-P

- lament, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10and... site's down.
if you have ads on your page, you might want to consider using that revenue to pay for a better webhost. - loneBoat, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Comment abuse!
Here's a megaupload of all the images:

PW for zip file is "voteforbush" - Treshnell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8NASA Image of the Day (http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/index.html) is a great way to find new, cool space themed photographs. Digital Blasphemy (http://www.digitalblasphemy.com/dbhome.shtml) also has a lot of space themed images designed for wallpapers, but you have to pay for full access to all of them.
- kirkouimet, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10My host's reply:
"It appears that the apache services on your server are up and running, but not parsing anything. I've let an admin know, and they're working on it! I'll let you know when it's back up." - Harbinger67, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8One of the best wallpaper sites I've seen; this one isn't just an archive of the same crap from every other wallpaper site with a mess of ads thrown in.
I hope this really takes off into something great. - caffiend, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Really nice site. I like you method for using filtering options, and you have lots of dual monitor wallpapers. Thanks!
- phatt-matt, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9What does Kevin Rose like? Long walks on the beach. Rainy days and hot chocolate. Manlove from some stranger on the Interweb.
- frith, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Too bad the site is riddled with errors, the pictures are amazing!

- jdpalite, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Some of us still visit sites for the content
- thcobbs, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9That's why I contribute $5 from my tax return to NASA every year... It's not much with just me, but it's still money they didn't have
- loneraven, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8The site isn't bad, nice concept overall.
But you need a more creative name for the site.
Social Wallpapering doesn't stick, and socwall isn't a domain name that many people will remember.
Just a suggestion - Harbinger67, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8*sorry, didn't have time to edit this into my last comment*
One thing that I personally would like to see is a better system for giving credit to artists/photogaphers. After about 3 minutes of wandering your site, I saw several images that I KNEW I had seen on the Astronomy Picture of the Day site. Here's an example:
Sombrero Galaxy on APoD, posted January 21, 2007 : http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap070121.html APoD gives full citation of the images origin.
Sombrero Galaxy on socwall.com, uploaded by Anonymous with no citation or credit given : http://www.socwall.com/browse/index.php?wpCategory=Space&wpSubcategory=All&wpLimit=9&wpSortby=0&wpFilter=0&wpQueryType=0&wpMarker=10&PHPSESSID=248627084ba403c3f09a266481fb2192 (that is the page with the image linked)
The second image is clearly edited a bit, but there's no doubt that it's the same thing. I saw this several times, but I'm too lazy to show more examples.
Maybe I'm just being anal, but I'd hate to see so many great artists/photographers/astronomers not get credit for their work. I'm just pointing this out, I'm not trying to be a dick. If I'm off my rocker, digg me down and I'll shut up :p
Oh, also, a way to filter wallpapers by resolution would be awesome. - andydumi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Are those actual photos from space or just art?
- llbbl, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Next time if you use (quotes) make sure to put a ( space ) after the last quote so the URL works.

http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/ - kirkouimet, on 10/25/2007, -9/+13Yeah I'm working on getting registration working, I have a local copy of the site that has a ton of new features I just need to polish it up. Let me know if you have any suggestions.
- vagarach, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Icarus' Wish is by Alyn over at deviantart, so if you like it, he has many more absolutely stunning celestial (and other) illustrations in his gallery.
http://alyn.deviantart.com - pabloD, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Yup, the site looks great (what I could see before the Digg effect got to it), and it's a wonderful idea. However, I have to agree: Image attribution and otherwise crediting the creators of the images is a must, and should be more prominent. If we enjoy these images so much, we should give mad props to the people who give them to us. Other than that, great work.
- Antietum, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5This is a cool site, though it does feel like it lacks something. Wallpapers are super high quality, definitly bookmarking and keeping an eye on it
- bbjohnnyt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I don't understand how some can bag on kirkouimet. Digg inspired him to make a kick-ass wallpaper site and then share it with us. How about some of you elitist nerds make a better site? Just first heat up a Hot Pocket for strength.
- 1021, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4oh man, mind blank, predecessor = hubble, successor is at national mall...
/me wacks myself with a bat. - vroom101, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@AstroSnail
Indeed, portions of Hubble's ACS (Advanced Camera for Surveys) are still offline:

APOD - Astronomy Picture of The Day - I have hundreds of great wallpapers from this site - check it out every day... if you like the picture, save it - it is that easy. Though nice to see a bunch in one spot - and the thought of social promoting the best is worthy... I still recommend a daily visit to APOD. -
