They saw the first one just south Cincinnati after sunset. They started seeing the rest about 30 miles south of Columbus. First two, then up two four at the same time...but they think they saw seven different ones.
One flew right over the car, showing the triangular silhoutte and lights shining down. The lights didn't blink, but were steady and seemed to change pattern from one vehicle to the next, and sometimes on the same vehicle. One even appeared to illuminate it's own body with an exterior lights on the "nose" and tip of each "wing". One had lights on the bottom in a hexagonal pattern. They all appeared to have a red light on top.
They didn't get an other-worldly sense when watching these craft. They were definitely moving much slower than single-prop aircraft and at first didn't appear to have a specific flight plan. But then they seemed to fly in pairs, in close proximity heading north; then split east and west before turning southward.
