- idesign562, on 11/30/2008, -4/+244May 24th, 2004... and it just got onto digg?
This cylindrical-projection view combines several frames from the navigation camera on NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity. The rover acquired these frames during its 115th martian day, or "sol," in the Meridiani Planum region of Mars, on May 21, 2004. The rover was near the edge of "Endurance Crater," which dominates the right half of this view. The crater is about 130 meters (about 430 feet) in diameter. - ericjbolt, on 11/30/2008, -4/+221What is that shiny thing way off in the distance, behind the "wood" piece?
- javy925, on 11/30/2008, -20/+231M.A.R.S.
Mars, bitches. - davidbarnes, on 11/30/2008, -12/+206As a physicist and geologist, that is certainly not wood. Instead it is a geoformation of most likely silicates, andesites and rhyolites, all of which have been seen and examined on Mar's surface before.
- JoeSpaceTime, on 11/30/2008, -0/+190That would make a great film.
- ThePhotoBoy, on 11/30/2008, -10/+185Mars Bar???
- dtele, on 11/30/2008, -3/+167The locals have lit a fire using the wood I guess
- Baronvontito1, on 11/30/2008, -2/+161I don't like you because you're probably smarter than me.
- Krumm, on 11/30/2008, -4/+146Further in the background is a Gloop/Gleep, looks like he made himself a campfire with some more of that wood...
- sanman, on 11/30/2008, -5/+144It did. It was called Adam's Ark, and it was written by Glen Larson.
They later renamed it Battlestar Galactica. - pyrotoad, on 11/30/2008, -2/+125It's gold.
Combined with the wood, we now have enough resources to build a barracks on mars. - bigyellowverdi, on 11/30/2008, -1/+123And a penis joke.
- silfiriel, on 11/30/2008, -1/+112and it's BREAKING!!!
- jc7012, on 11/30/2008, -2/+104So, "broken"?
- msmeagher, on 11/30/2008, -10/+112 At first, I thought the NASA folk had a sense of humor and were talking about the metal rod sticking straight up in the foreground!
BTY, it's a railroad tie, not a 2x4. They used to have trains. - bonkerz, on 11/30/2008, -58/+159That is crazy. Some people say it could be rock... sure doesn't look like rock to me.
- nunlover, on 11/30/2008, -13/+110i bet they'd find wood on uranus
- Surferess, on 11/30/2008, -6/+103The only rock it looks like is petrified wood.

- wonderbriefs, on 11/30/2008, -0/+84#1. This pic is from 2004 and is hardly "breaking news."
#2. We have already confirmed that Mars still has an atmosphere, albeit a thin one.
#3. We have already confirmed water in the form of icecaps, massive underground glaciers, humidity in the atmosphere, and even falling snow.
#4. Yes, sedimentary rocks occur on all scales. - 8bitflu, on 11/30/2008, -23/+104I for one welcome our wood overlords.
- wildest, on 11/30/2008, -6/+86Jettisoned captains log from an apollo mission finally landed somewhere
- tobidashi, on 11/30/2008, -1/+80That's not exactly 'breaking' news...
- had3l, on 11/30/2008, -2/+75So Venus is wet?
- diggeek82, on 11/30/2008, -4/+67Some men in a pickup truck drove into a lumberyard. One of the men walked in the office and says, "We need some four-by-twos."
The clerk replies, "You mean two-by-fours, don't you?"
The guy scratches his head and says, "I'll go check," and goes back to the truck.
He returns and says, "Yeah, I meant two-by-four."
"All right. How long do you need them?"
The guy pauses for a minute and says, "I better go check." After a while, he returns to the office and says, "A long time. We're gonna build a house." - shunban, on 11/30/2008, -2/+61no Uranus is.

- sonofashoe, on 11/30/2008, -5/+61As a stoner, rock musician and tree hugger, I am 100% certain that is not a rock, it is wood. A cedar-like species indigenous to the low albedo region and given the genus Woodicus Marticus. This one appears to have been personally hand crafted by the famous interplanetary whittler Cydonia (I ain't got no BODY) Mensae.
