red sun: HOLY ***** ***** THE SUN IS EXPLODING - Ploosheeta, on 02/22/2008, -3/+77That's no moon...
- henhouse0, on 02/22/2008, -3/+33I got to see the eclipse when it happened 2 days ago. Took about 1 hour to fully cover, but it was really neat to keep checking on. Next will happen Dec. 21, 2010.
- KyjL, on 02/22/2008, -1/+28I find your lack of intelligent conversation disturbing
- imants, on 02/22/2008, -3/+20If anyone were to bother to take 10 seconds to read the caption, you'd know that it's a composite. So it is photoshopped (in a sense) after all
- LordStandley, on 02/22/2008, -3/+19What are you ***** retarded?
- coppyrightmind, on 02/22/2008, -5/+21"this is because the moon is half the size of the sun" Koranic science FTW!!!
- johnmatias, on 02/22/2008, -0/+13Ditto. Stupid life giving rain.
- lrdntwnd, on 02/22/2008, -0/+13The photo is not from NASA. They didn't take it. it was taken by Jerry Lodriguss and you can find his website here: http://www.astropix.com/INDEX.HTM

- Magillicutti, on 02/22/2008, -1/+10No they don't.. "They" say it's Dec. 21, 2012.. 2 years later... and "they" are idiots for not even understanding the Mayan calendar.
- SteveMax, on 02/22/2008, -7/+16Yeah, like, totally, yeah, lol.
How the hell did you come to Digg, even more: to an astronomy story? - cerealjynx, on 02/22/2008, -0/+9This way I can enjoy the eclipse I missed, because of ***** I FORGOT AND WAS SITTING ON MY ASS THE WHOLE TIME!!
- bittdude, on 02/22/2008, -0/+8No afraid not....it's the LUNAR eclipse from a few days ago
- Matteos, on 02/22/2008, -0/+8Problem is, if it does happen, your million dollars will be worthless pieces of paper.
- Gryffydd, on 02/22/2008, -0/+8Man you people are dumb. When you can see a Solar Eclipse, IT'S DAYTIME
- RavennX, on 02/22/2008, -0/+7God damnit.
- small3687, on 02/22/2008, -0/+7Who in gods name started this whole post that damn rick roll video trend. Can someone give me the history on it cuz I fall for it every freaking time and then I get the damn song stuck in my head the rest of the day.
- Kenzan, on 02/22/2008, -3/+10Shopped.
Everyone knows the Moon is a just a big hole in the Sky. - griz, on 02/22/2008, -0/+7No, the eclipse was quite real, I assure you.
- haydesigner, on 02/22/2008, -0/+7You *really* need to see a dermatologist.

- INDOAZZ, on 02/22/2008, -12/+18Another great photograph from NASA.
- SlowOnTheUptake, on 02/22/2008, -0/+5Do you accept PayPal?
- Zeusandhera, on 02/22/2008, -0/+5Since we're doing shameless plugs, here's the video I created with all the pictures I took.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49oXzNQS1Ac
The picture resolution and quality wasn't as good as the the photo NASA showed, but they were good enough for a Youtube video. - bittdude, on 02/22/2008, -0/+5No it isn't a solar eclipse for the following reasons:
1) The moon has a redish tint - This is by light from the sun being bent as it goes through Earth's atmosphere. This would not occur in a solar eclipse
2) The glow you see is the moon leaving Earth's shadow, so what you see is not the sun.
3) In that photo you can see both Saturn and Regulus. These were two major focal points in Wednesday's lunar eclipse.
4) Also, check the source. That photo is on Nasa's website. While it is possible that they could make mistakes, it is unlikely they will confuse a solar eclipse with a lunar one.
So uh yes, I did look at the picture, did you? - projjalc, on 02/22/2008, -0/+5I don't see what that has to do with this article, unless you're trying to say that Blu-Ray eclipsed HD-DVD completely. But then you'd still be buried for making a lame comment.
- jalagl, on 02/22/2008, -1/+6I liked this picture, taken here in Costa Rica (link to the newspaper article)
http://www.nacion.com/ln_ee/2008/febrero/22/aldea1 ... - inactive, on 02/22/2008, -0/+5The *****?
- blackkbot, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4The phases of the moon are because the sun is only lighting up a portion of the moon at a time that you can actually see. It is relative to where the sun is in comparison to where you are on earth. The lunar eclipse is because the earth gets in between the moon and the sun. Good enough?
- Zeusandhera, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4Here's an actual video I made with the pictures I took.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49oXzNQS1Ac - blackkbot, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4Solar eclipses are when the moon gets in between the earth and the sun. The moon would be black and the you would see a change in the brightness outside. Also it would be daytime.
- haydesigner, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4No need to call yourself names...
- Magillicutti, on 02/22/2008, -1/+5It's not even certain which day corresponds to the end of the Mayan b'ak'tun cycle. One method of calculation says December 21, the other says December 23. I'm sorry, but I refuse to accept such sloppiness in my apocalyptic predictions. Plus, did it ever occur to people that the Mayans didn't have much of a reason to continue writing the 14th, 15th, 16th and so forth b'ak'tun cycles? It's called laziness, not a prediction. Everything linked to 2012 is either a misinterpretation of fact, or complete baloney. To the people digging me down... I want to make a bet with you. I bet you one million dollars that nothing globally cataclysmic will occur in 2012. I'll even define globally cataclysmic to mean "causing the deaths of more than 10 million people, or more than $100 trillion worth of property damage." If it does, I'll gladly make you a millionaire. When it doesn't, I'll email you with details on how to make out the check.
- notahappycamper, on 02/22/2008, -1/+5whatever that was i hope it doesn't catch on.....
- IllBeBack, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4Some kalamari sounds good.
- edwartica, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3Jesus is coming back on December 20th anyways!
- tuumi, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3Did you mean, "Damn water cycle?"
- bbardlbradd, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3The new "Shopped" is now someone saying that they're waiting for the "Shopped" comment.
Not any better. - robbob, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3Clouds were moving fast, so I caught a few glimpse here and there within the hour. No one else in the neighborhood even cared
- Gryffydd, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3I was in Fred Meyer the other day and this song came on. It was a weird moment because I'd never even heard that song before I got Rick Rolled the first time, so it was associated just with digg, not with the 80's or the radio or anything else.
- SlowOnTheUptake, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3I think what appears to be a light from behind the moon is really the thin crescent shaped portion of the moon that wasn't in Earth's shadow when the picture was taken. It would be very over exposed compared to the darker red area so you don't see detail, just a bright area. Per the caption, they combined a picture of the surrounding star field and a picture of the moon itself because the photograph doesn't have the dynamic range that your eye has.
- HesNikke, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3and a solar eclips is when the moon gets between the sun and the earth
- gambl0r, on 02/22/2008, -1/+4I like this one better: http://www.flickr.com/photos/no3rdw/2280577485/ It's all about the foreground elements. (yes, internet detectives, that's my account)
