- iggee85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2About time. An asteroid hitting earth along with climate change are the two biggest single events capable of threatening human civilization.
- breakaway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So we can colonize planets, but can't blow up a rock thats about to destroy most of our civilization?
- DisgruntledDave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We don't have the technology to do anything like this yet, and it doesn't seem as if we are going to in the next hundred years or so. Right now we're at a time with the greatest technologies we have ever known, however we still aren't advanced enough to do anything about this sort of situation (The size and speed of the asteroid that hits is unknown, and we can't bank on expecting it to be a certain size. If it turned out to be the size of the moon, good luck, it's over.)
- Greyarea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Our best bet is colinization of other planets."
Er...they also get hit by rocks. Learning how to stop planets getting hit by rocks is our best bet. - skilletsavior35, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ok well first if theirs going to be a rock hit us and kill us i wouldnt want to kno. if everyone else knew then theyd probably burn ***** and tare down sites b4 it gets hear for fun. second if its going to do lots of damage to us then its probably going to be big witch i dought we have anything that can deflect it...i say that we all just spread out between planets so if one dies out their are others..and i think that we would be able to set up settlements on other planets easy just take a while ....we would just live in a dome.
- rderveloy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, we can't do either. We can't colonize planets yet because there are no known planets suitable for supporting human life by themselves and terraforming technologies are almost non-existent. Even if terraforming technologies were up to snuff, it would still take years and years to terraform an entire planet.
- FlintZA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sure, other planets also get hit by rocks, but the more planets we're spread over, the less chance of all of them being hit all at once. One colonized planet=one shot kill.
- doldr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Carl Sagan used to argue that while the risk of being hit by a civilization destroying asteroid in the next hundred year is something like 1 in 2000, the risks involved in developing, testing and using counter measures might be even greater.
- jmbillings, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0true - but I think it's inevitable. I don't believe in God, but I do believe in something that keeps stuff "level". Look at the recent natural disasters - tsunamis, earthquakes and so on. Is it weird they all occur close together? I think not. As world population increases exponentially perhaps it is just inevitable, as planet earth tries to keep a balance...
Just my tuppenceworth - and ignoring the moral question of why a bunch of innocent Indonesians suffer when those more corrupt can continue... - CadMasterAdam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2don't fo-get yo mamma
- overlordmead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why can't we colonize other planets right now if we sent men to the moon 30 years ago? I can't believe that the two most difficult parts of the trip have been solved (take-off--->land--->take-off) and we're still stuck earth-side. Let's start sending equipment to the Martian polar caps and have robots build a solar powered electrolysis plant so we have a tank full of hydrogen and potentially habitats built before we get there.
Hurry up! Earth is a ***** hole and I, for one, cannot wait to get off it.
PS - on that note they disbursed a Heinlein Award(Commercial space initiatives) the other day. Best tribute would be to name the human carrier element the Lewis & Clark - Greyarea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The third being mime artists.
- FlintZA, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Easy, just put Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck on it with a nuke and some drilling equipment. The down side is no more Die Hard movies, but at least we won't get any more Ben Affleck/Jennifer Lopez collaberations..
Seriously though, what can we possibly do? If a rock the size of a small country is headed in our direction do we really have the technology to do anything about it other than hide? Our best bet is colinization of other planets.
