- byukid, on 11/26/2008, -1/+43This is like Old Yeller dying, but real, and with a giant camera.
:( RIP HST - AmyVernon, on 11/26/2008, -0/+41I still remember when it was all screwed up when first launched and how everyone clamored that it would never work and be a boondoggle. Thanks, Hubble, for proving them all wrong.
- tinybubs, on 11/27/2008, -0/+27Hubble is one of the few scientific instruments that produced results that the average guy on the street could appreciate. Instead of a shuttle mission coming back empty from a delivery to the space station maybe NASA could go retrieve Hubble and put it in a museum. It would be a testament to what human beings can do when they put their minds to a task.
- RIOGoose, on 11/26/2008, -0/+20Who can honestly say they don't love this stuff? I can't wait for all of the upcoming and planned orbital scopes.
- jerrolds, on 11/27/2008, -0/+16I remember when it was launched in 1990 - i just started junior high - has it been 18years already?
damn. - CosmicSombrero, on 11/27/2008, -0/+14Uh. While these are all great shots, I am 100% certain that picture #3 is not from Hubble. I'm pretty sure that there would be heads rolling at NASA if someone pointed Hubble anywhere near the Sun.
- andrewrchambers, on 11/28/2008, -0/+13No pic of the Hubble Deep Field?
Surely that should be No.1..
It's a photo of seeming blackness in space that showed what a crazy and expansive universe we live in.

if anyone is interested. - kd1s, on 11/27/2008, -0/+11Hubble isn't the only one. Look at the Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity. Not only did they rove Mars, they pretty much told us there was water there and still is water there except it's frozen.
And where there is water, even at freezing temperatures, there is not only the possibility but the probability of life of some sort. It may only be microbial, but it's life.
And those little rovers are a credit to the team that put them together. They were only supposed to last for 90 sols, instead they went for more than 10 times that amount. - alphgeek, on 11/28/2008, -0/+7Great images and an excellent instrument, but pic 3 is not from the Hubble. The Hubble doesn't take pictures of the sun. It would destroy the sensitive CCD cameras on the Hubble. Even aiming a little earthbound telescope at the sun - without a mylar filter or equivalent - can cause fires.
- robbiedo, on 11/28/2008, -0/+6Am I wrong, I thought the HST is set for a service mission #4 in 2009, and planned to to be functional for a number of years until at least 2014.
It would be nice to bring Hubble home after it completes is science mission but hardly plausible. - StarSaber, on 11/28/2008, -0/+5Great pictures. There is one problem (besides the sun picture not coming from Hubble), Hubble will continue to be used after 2010 if the service mission goes off as planned in early 2009. With repairs it should be able to function till, at least, 2013.
- greenish13, on 11/27/2008, -0/+3These pictures are amazing. Images like these from space are better than works of art.
It really makes you wonder what else is out there. - cddict1, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2Thanks a ton for link.
- danconia, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2Exactly. What's what I was looking for but didn't see... most important picture ever taken of the skies that's for sure (maybe most important taken ever).
- mrlivingston, on 11/27/2008, -2/+4Hubble schmubble...Behold the awesome pastacity of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
- inactive, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2#10 looks like a giant space *****/balls
- CenturionMonkey, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2It's sad to see Hubble go, but it's even more exciting to know a more powerful one is coming. But I think, as good as this list is, it's missing the two best shots Hubble ever took. One is widely considered the most important photo in astronomy ever taken (the second one).

Each one of those points of light is a galaxy (except the ones with 4 little points coming out of them and look like they twinkle like stars...those are stars.) - Telekenesis, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2Thanks alot.
- fightingforair, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2Because I like to start an angry mob. You know, the easiest people to get angry, religious folk.

- bakagaigin, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2Who's to say you can't make a visible picture out of infrared light? I've done it myself, look it up.
- wizzroom, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1well, they can disassemble it and bring it down in pieces. expensive, but you can't put a price on a piece of human history and ingenuity
- inactive, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1This is a decent top ten. The dust cloud images are a little over represented, considering the Spitzer Telescope has some even better images. The only shots missing are Eta Carinae and the Hubble Deep field. The Eskimo Nebula is my personal favorite.
- drgruney, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1Not sure if a fully laden shuttle can make the return trip.
- Izzardo, on 11/28/2008, -1/+2And behold Xenu shed his bathrobe and walk around once again in nothing but fluffy slippers.

- Impressa, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1Well, the blogger/writer just got owned there on the comments of the article.
- Telekenesis, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1 I can`t wait to see what the new telescope will bring us!
Does anyone know the name of it - RIOGoose, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1You do understand that none of the pictures from the Hubble look like they do while being taken, right? The colors have to be reconstructed?
- inactive, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1You do understand the difference between a photo taken in the visible spectrum versus one created from infrared, right?
- thegrantman, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1I went back to see if I had scrolled by it.
Danconia's right.... The Deep Field photograph has been billed by many astronomers as the most important photograph ever taken. - xister, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1Actually....
From the comments of that blog page:
"Howard Bond Says:

Thanks for putting together this collection.
Two small corrections:
1. Hubble is NOT being decommissioned in 2010! During a shuttle visit scheduled for spring 2009, astronauts will install a new camera and a new spectrograph, as well as repair two of the existing instruments, making Hubble more powerful than ever. We hope it will continue operating for at least 5 years after that.
2. Photo 3 of the Sun, while spectacular, was not taken with Hubble. We never even point within 50 degrees of the Sun!

Space Telescope Science Institute" - santiago1, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1 Hey, since you're getting a nice new fancy one, can I have your old one?
- Nonlinearity, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1Seriously! If these pictures don't move you and leave you in awe of the universe, what will?
- Myztry, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1Decommissioned a year prior to the launch of the replacement. Seems stupid to me. Launch the replacement THEN decommission.
"A large object is heading towards Earth. We need to get a detailed view of it's structure and possible weaknesses ASAP"
"Sorry Sir, in between telescopes...Could you come back in a year or so..." - SquidLips, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1
Wow, what an amazingly uninformed article.
What new telescope? The Webb scope is strictly infrared and is not designed for taking such crisp pix. There will be a huge gap in spaceborne telescopes.
And that picture of the sun could not have come from Hubble; its elements would have burned out. What rubbish. - byukid, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1Well then this is in no way like Old Yeller dying at all.
- leonadik, 9 hr 57 min ago, -0/+0@Engine24
Yes, that's for real, silly and surreal too!
I'm gonna include this in my lesson plans for our Astronomy topics in class... Thanks!
http://www.teachersparadise.com/ - fightingforair, on 11/28/2008, -1/+1Why must we rely on religion for our fascinations when there are real beauties to behold and discoveries waiting to be found.
Why must we be bound to religion which says we should Not wonder and question things around us when we see images like Hubble that prove there is indeed a sea of questions awaiting us.
Thanks to the men and women who made Hubble possible!
A true show of the beauties that surround us. - SpinAlley, on 11/28/2008, -1/+1Why must we bring religion into every conversation?
- Greenergrass, on 11/27/2008, -2/+2Good work Hubble! Amazing shots.

http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_eye_of_go ... - carflo, on 12/01/2008, -0/+0It makes me sad to think that Hubble will be gone. My logical scientific mind understands. The romantic side of my soul will mourn. Hubble has given the world so much beauty. Sometimes I feel as if the pictures were painted by the hand of God - and I am an agnostic. :~) I don't think younger people who were not old enough to remember a time before Hubble understand the power of the original pictures. They were beyond anything we could ever imagine. The only thing close was the earth rise over the moon during the Apollo missions. The magic of Merlin could not have produced a more wondrous sight.
Sorry if I sound corny., but this old lady feels fortunate to have lived long enough to have seen them. - danconia, on 11/28/2008, -1/+1Too big to return it anytime soon. Either leave it up there or push its ass down to Earth so it can fall on some Somali pirates or something.
