- chromevinyl, on 06/20/2008, -0/+14Sure, APOD has gargantuan pics of space, but why is this so lo-res?
Me wanty wallaper. - mhanley, on 06/20/2008, -0/+7high resolution/widescreen please!
- inactive, on 06/20/2008, -1/+6Damn it is so beautiful!
On the 18th, I was climbing a high mountain here to watch the solstice moon at sunset. Everything went perfectly fine until I looked up to the sky... What I found next disappointed me so much that I just wanted to jump off the cliffs. I did jumped off and literally I was cliff-hanging. (To be continued) - centran, on 06/20/2008, -0/+5This is a good reason to always have a camera handy.
A couple of days ago I was close to downtown Chicago. The moon was just on the upper edge of the sears tower and it looked awesome. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me. - baylat, on 06/20/2008, -0/+5That's new.
- silfiriel, on 06/20/2008, -1/+4ha, ha you're all really funny, now lets get serious..is it just a photoshop edit or what?
- H3000, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3Beautiful picture.
Summer is officially here! Yippeeeee! Let's all bust out the sunscreen and eat some peaches on the beaches. - inactive, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3If you're cliff hanging too in my previous comment, I can tell you that there was a patch of clouds just at the right size to completely cover the moon until 9PM when the moon size went unspectacularly tiny.
Never mind, the solar eclipse on August 1 will compensate it. Hopefully I will get to see the moments like here: http://images.google.com/images?q=solar+eclipse+su ... - ReisenInaba, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3Related:

- far2fargo, on 06/20/2008, -1/+2I hear it's made out of cheese.
- edwartica, on 06/20/2008, -1/+2They do a special chant before hand which brings the moon closer to the Earth.
- silfiriel, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1was it the photo, the story, or the unbearable heat that hinted the summer....
- forthegift, on 06/22/2008, -0/+1haiku seems right
- Heavypettingzoo, on 06/22/2008, -0/+1Cape Sounion is much closer to the moon than I am... look at the size of it!!
- mhanley, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1That is very cool!
- obeythefist, on 06/20/2008, -1/+2It's taken with a telephoto lens. Everything gets bigger, but keeps the same proportions so the moon on the horizon, compared to the objects on the horizon, seems gigantic.
You can also accomplish the effect with a high res digital camera. Take any picture of the moon on the horizon. This for example: http://www.mikelevin.com/OsornoMoonrise.jpg
If you crop it down so you only see the moon and what's directly in front of it, then blow it up to the original size of the whole photo, the moon will seem huge. - brewer, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Should've sent a poet.

GIobal Issues!
http://forums.cozay.com - silfiriel, on 06/20/2008, -3/+2OK, so how exactly do they make the moon so large on photos? I've seen a lot of moon risings, but none with this big moon.
- matt510, on 06/20/2008, -4/+2They don't do anything. The is how big the moon is. The theory is that because you are comparing to objects you are familiar with, it looks bigger whereas high in the sky you can't compare its size to anything. But it is actually always the same size.
- bouche, on 06/20/2008, -3/+1I've got news for you. There is an RSS feed for the APOD photos that you can subscribe to and spare us on digg from seeing APOD every single frikkin' day.
Who's going to help me bury these? I can't be the only one that sees how ridiculous the APOD post daily to digg is.
