- AmyVernon, on 01/04/2009, -4/+27that's one of the coolest APODs yet.
- jboitnott, on 01/04/2009, -3/+22My brain hurts from attempting to understand the explanation. I know... I am not the sharpest tool in the shed.
- VanD, on 01/04/2009, -2/+11I thought firefox didn't load the image properly until I read the description.
How could I distrust you firefox, you would never steer me wrong. - k7jeb, on 01/04/2009, -4/+10That's because the extreme redshift "cools" the radiation (cf: cosmic microwave background radiation at 2.725 K). ;-)
- TSK05, on 01/05/2009, -0/+4That would be because it's not exactly an explanation. You need to understand a few things to understand this picture/article. First would be redshift. Then spectroscopy. Then Hubble's Law. There are wiki articles on all of those.
- emecks, on 01/04/2009, -3/+7Mental, that looks like a pile of coins.
- ScottyAnimal, on 01/05/2009, -1/+5Soooo red is a slow color?
- Totz83, on 01/04/2009, -2/+5That's Spectrumtacular
- cl2yp71c, on 01/05/2009, -1/+4Where's the machine gun on top? V_V
- TheRedFool, on 01/04/2009, -3/+6SICK!
- TSK05, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3Any redshift "cools" the radiation (reduces the energy, and temperature is nothing but an expression of internal energy) but I see what you did there.
- ThatGeek, on 01/05/2009, -2/+5please dont let this become a meme
- DirtyVicar, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3He cannot lie.
- TSK05, on 01/05/2009, -0/+2All that's missing is the explanation of spectroscopy (which is what the picture is of) and how that ties into the above.
- bbqsalad, on 01/05/2009, -0/+2Oh I love Joust!
- Pandalume, on 01/05/2009, -0/+2Better distant light than close wind.
- Virgule, on 01/05/2009, -1/+3Look like military ribbons.
- Phormium, on 01/05/2009, -0/+2The frequency of light is changed by motion, which is similar to how the frequency of sound is changed by motion. When a car drives by you the pitch gets higher as the car approaches, and gets lower as the car recedes. Similarly, since the universe is expanding, the other galaxies are moving away from us. This motion causes the light emitted from them to be stretched out to lower frequencies, also known as a redshift.
- avonwodahs, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1To me it looked like salty milk.
- frontaxle, on 01/05/2009, -1/+2Gotta use a tripod dude. Seriously. No flash? Tripod.
- Phormium, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1Spectroscopy is a method of dispersing light and measuring the intensity at various wavelengths. Once you measure the redshift, you can estimate the distance to other galaxies, because the distance is proportional to the amount of redshift.
- jemka, on 01/05/2009, -1/+2...but it's YOUR dog.
- Virgule, on 01/05/2009, -2/+2...but you are in the shed...
- EffinRiot, on 01/04/2009, -2/+2The universe is pixelated.
- Kev8888, on 01/04/2009, -4/+4She was lookin' kinda dumb
With her finger and her thumb - digitaljohn, on 01/05/2009, -0/+0fake
- Tophillious, on 01/04/2009, -5/+4buried for power user
- spyd3rweb, on 01/05/2009, -3/+2No need to send this junk to the front page daily, if you like APOD, bookmark it or something.
- inactive, on 01/04/2009, -3/+2OMG! I am in the Matrix!
- superspaldo707, on 01/05/2009, -4/+3buried...FPU!!!!
- bag2p, on 01/05/2009, -10/+4APOD is kinda lame.
- dreid1987, on 01/05/2009, -11/+4I LIKE
