- matt510, on 06/22/2008, -2/+19Cheaters, they used this back in 2005!! http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap050112.html
Ok, actually I don't care, this is an awesome image of a barred spiral! - BasicShape, on 06/22/2008, -1/+14What's amazing is that there are only four stars from our own galaxy in that picture. The ones with the spikes. Everything else are star clusters and other galaxies. Incredible!
- ryancawdor, on 06/22/2008, -0/+11Photos of galaxies BLOW MY MIND. The thought that these are real, physical objects is almost beyond comprehension. The distances and sizes involved completely dwarfs anything that average humans are used to thinking about. My mixed feelings range from awe and wonder, to a bit of dismay that these views are as good as it gets during our lifetimes.
- jamessavik, on 06/22/2008, -3/+11My favorite galaxy. Someday I wanna settle down and start a little farm or maybe a spoo ranch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoo%29 in one of those spiral arms.
- shawnsonium, on 06/22/2008, -0/+8Look at the distant galaxies in the background. Each with their own star/solar systems, and very possibly, life-bearing worlds.
I'll never get to explore those kinds of things. At least in my lifetime we've developed the tools to see distant shores across the tremendously vast ocean of space. (One of my favorite Sagan metaphors.) That alone is enough to fill my brain with wonder. - Micherik, on 06/22/2008, -0/+5NGC? OGC!
- k7jeb, on 06/22/2008, -1/+6APOD's dirty little secret: On the weekends you sometimes get reruns. Better get used to it. When Hubble finally bites the dust, we are going to have a major wallpaper shortage and a lot of retreads.
- LoveWidescreen, on 06/22/2008, -0/+4The detail in those photos is unbelievable. That Hubble telescope is one of the best things to come out of the space program. I hope its functionality goes on past its expected lifetime like the Mars rovers.
- banmaster, on 06/22/2008, -0/+3Pity those twerps who think the universe is under 6000 years old will never let themselves look at and experience these images like you do.
- Specializedone, on 06/22/2008, -1/+4Thats one thing that always gets me, I can never differentiate between things in the fore and background of the subject of pics of outer space. Very cool to know about that little trick now.
- Specializedone, on 06/22/2008, -1/+4I thought it was kind of weird also. I always thought super-massive black holes are what held most galaxies together, and often gave the distinctive spiral shape to many galaxies. Any amateur (or professional too) astronomers out there care to explain if in fact a galaxy can form without a black hole at it's center? Could it be because of the mass of the galaxy is whats acting as the gravitational force that's holding it together?
- trezegol, on 06/22/2008, -0/+270 Million light years 0_o . I feel incredibly small and useless .
- TannerPwnz, on 06/22/2008, -0/+2I'm not a fan of the series, but I took a few minutes to read through that whole wiki. Interesting stuff there.
- Vector713, on 06/22/2008, -0/+2Wow, hard to believe this beauty is only one of trillions... I can't wait to see them all as they're discovered! Our universe never ceases to amaze me.
- jamessavik, on 06/22/2008, -1/+3Massive black holes are the center of gravity for many galaxies- sort of like an "gravity anchor". You can't see them, you have to look for their gravity effects which cause stars close to the galaxies core to move at a frantic pace. When the black hole eats interstellar gas, dust or the occasional star, it emits radiation in the high energy bands like X-rays and gamma rays. Sometimes super massive black holes cause jets of escaping heated materials that extend for light years but you usually need a radio telescope to "see" them.

- banmaster, on 06/22/2008, -0/+2Not really. I mean, I'd be pretty pissed if my new digital camera could only resolve details large enough to be measured in Astronomical Units.
- 68024, on 06/23/2008, -0/+2Makes me think of Spore...
- matt510, on 06/22/2008, -0/+2Black holes are not required to be at the center of galaxies. There are still many questions unanswered about galactic creation, but there is enough mass to keep the galaxy together without having a supermassive black hole in the center.
- WMGoBuffs, on 06/22/2008, -0/+1This and NGC1365 are great examples of the range of Barred spirals
- chromehound47, on 06/22/2008, -0/+1I love photos like this. really great to center you - how small are we?
- Hellothere123, on 06/22/2008, -1/+2Stars orbit around massive black holes.
- pinguwin, on 06/22/2008, -0/+1It was recently discovered that the Milky Way isn't a traditional spiral galaxy, but is a barred spiral itself. Either type of spiral, it's cool. Here is an apod of what astronomers think the Milky Way looks like: http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap050825.html

- stephenhacking, on 06/23/2008, -0/+1Its a shame we will never know in our life time.
weather life exists in such areas of our universe. - matt510, on 06/22/2008, -0/+1I've got news for you: your complaining about APOD is getting old. You waste more time EVERY day making this SAME comment than it would have taken to scroll past the ONE article.
How many crappy articles are there out there? You scroll past all of them don't you? Or do you actually look at EVERY SINGLE digg submission? The APOD submissions are of benefit to digg because they have get stuff to look at and learn about. - matt510, on 06/23/2008, -0/+1I have a giant brain that is able to reduce any complex machine into a simple yes or no answer.
- Urbanninja622, on 06/23/2008, -0/+1How in the hell did you know that?
- matt510, on 06/22/2008, -2/+2What is it that you are confused about?
- Specializedone, on 06/23/2008, -0/+0Cool thanks for the info :)
- hrvat420, on 06/22/2008, -1/+1Milky way ftw!
- cjb651, on 06/23/2008, -1/+1that's ridiculous
- mxz800, on 06/22/2008, -4/+3Not known to have a black hole?
- GeorgeTirebiter, on 06/22/2008, -2/+0Run for your lives....It's the cosmic PacMan!!
- bouche, on 06/22/2008, -4/+1I've got news for you. There is an RSS feed for the APOD photos that you can subscribe to and spare us on digg from seeing APOD every single frikkin' day.
Who's going to help me bury these? I can't be the only one that sees how ridiculous the APOD post daily to digg is. - SpinCaster, on 06/22/2008, -6/+1Just a great and powerful looking galaxy
