- malarkey42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Developer here. Wow, I'm quite surprised to see this end up on digg. Anyway, a couple responses and comments to people's comments:
1) Why isn't it a web application?
Well, because I didn't feel like writing it as one. I'm not really a huge fan of them plus I like using the developer tools that came on my Mac. Besides, where would I host such a thing? I just release these things a side hobby to my day job.
2) Is there something like this for Windows/Linux?
I'm working on a Windows version and most likely a Linux version too since I'm going to port my code over to those platforms using a cross-platform GUI library (most likely wxWidgets). Originally, I had planned on holding back the release of the Mac version until I got a Windows version up and running too but I wanted to gauge interest in such a tool (i.e., would it actually be worth my time to port it over) and it seems like there's enough interest so I guess I'm going to do one. - kfp40, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18they don't make it for xp users because most of them know how to remove a link.
- malarkey42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Forgot to add:
3) Why don't I make something like this for digg.
digg (as far as I know) doesn't have a public API that one can use to mess with one's account without logging into digg via a web browser. del.icio.us and Flickr do, which is why you have desktop apps to manage your accounts on those services. I suppose I could do something that would pull all the links from your account and check them all but then you'd still be left with the task of manually removing all of them from your account (instead of say, pressing a button and having the software do it for you). - clearrecrd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9This is an awesome idea! anybody know of something similar for us XP users?
- Nukem945, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yeah, I was just gonna say... NOTE: Mac Only.
- linkdj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Great idea, but why couldn't they write this as a web application?
- dstrube, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Cool idea.
If only there were something like this for the majority of computer users... - afrazkhan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6
Kind of pointless to alienate Linux and WIndows users when an online script could have done the job. - altcountryman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Ouch!
- robotsongs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6ZING!
- deusx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Kind of pointless to care about Linux and Windows users when you've got a Mac and felt like writing an app on it.
In other words: This author felt like writing a desktop app on a Mac. If you want to write an online script, go for it. If that makes you feel alienated, ask someone for a hug. - SecretFormula, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3EDGINESS APPROACHING CRITICAL MASS
- deusx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd guess because it couldn't *be* a web app. It would need to be a long-running or scheduled program that loops through all your bookmarks. I've got 7000+ bookmarks - how long do you think that would take to process?
A web app tends to be made up of little short-running bits of (hopefully) responsive pages. Some web apps are backed up by queues and long-running processes in the background. That starts to get complex, so why not just run a desktop app? - clearrecrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Make it a web app and then couldn't it easily work for digg as well? I think it would be great if it could go through my diggs and remove the ones that are dead, or maybe digg should just make something like this
- tiede, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hi there,
I have made a small Java application some time ago that checks the links in your del.icio.us account. You can see and download it here:
http://www.tiede.dk:8080/roller/page/kim?entry=del_icio_us_post_checker - clearrecrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That worked for me! Thanks
- dstrube, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Neat. Can you make the source code available?
- taude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He could have written the tool in Python and wxWidgets. Then he could have had his beautiful Mac app, and the rest of use could have had it in Linux and Windows.
(Oopos, I see someone below talking about wxWidgets.) - tiede, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yep - you can get it here: http://code.google.com/p/delicious-post-checker/

I use their link roll to post to my www.gamegoof.com and its been so easy, the title
led me to believe it was dead and shutdown... :p - slamilaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0whats really needed is not something that will like monty python "bring outcha dead"
instead it should edit my link to the cached version if available, so i can always get my stuff.
shouldnt be hard with google cache and everything (uh not like i program though so...)
call it resusci.licious
resuscitates your dead link - rnagibson, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Is there any financial advantage to making deadlicious available to XP users? Or is the developer working for Mac?
- Crass22, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2LOL XP users? what? They should make this for digg perhaps.
