http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=242380 - darkdaedra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Shift F-10. Sweet.
- quadvods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22So instead of clicking 3 links to find out... this is what you do:
SHIFT-F10 for command prompt (during GUI xp setup)
cd
cd "Program Files"
cd "Windows NT"
cd Pinball
pinball.exe - KineticFlow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15When you're on actual Windows GUI installation part (network settings, time zone, last minute setting etc), you can right click on language toolbar, go to "readme", then notepad opens. From the notepad, you can use file-open command, which allows you to browse My Computer.. Then you can play minesweeper. I haven't tried pinball though.
- awa1ct, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10nice to know, when I reformat my computers :)
- mingistech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8this is an important feature for an OS that needs to be reinstalled every 6 months. :)
- GarethSaxby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Hak.5 did this in it's first episode, all the way back in August, so I've known how to do it for a while. I'm sure there are a lot of people however that don't know, so it's good news for them really =)
- dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6theres alot of geeks here who install xp on a regular basis and its extremely boring and long to do it on older machines.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7it's on whirlpool.... which is awesome :D +digg
- pjkeyzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ctrl + Esc... I accept paypal :)
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6man I thought this was some way to get a hundred bucks for running XP....
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yeah. I could've sworn I'd seen it before. That's where.
- framitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"I will give $100000 to the first person who discovers how to open the start menu with out using the mouse or the windows key! "
Wish I could take this seriously, but it is just too easy. An alternative to Ctrl / ESC. Simply have all windows closed or minimized, then hit TAB, the start button is highlighted. Press ENTER to bring up the menu. No mouse, and no windows key needed.
Now get a life. - kacymartin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4this was on Hak.5 a while back. he played solitare while windows was installing.
- nathanx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The obvious idea of allowing a user to play games while something is loading was patented by Namco.
US patent 5,718,632
This is why nobody else does it commercially. - sidmystic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Crap, I was doing this on my win2k boxes during unattended installs in my lab when it was still called 'NT5'. It's also handy for quickly modifying the boot.ini in case there's something special you want the system to do after the final reboot.
Btw, you can open task manager w/ Ctrl+Shift+Esc and manipulate windows with Alt-Space. Who needs a mouse except to digg? :) - Ashex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Would have been nice to know a couple weeks back when I was doing a mass install of XP to 22 computers :/
Although, I'm fairly sure I'll be doing that again soon, so I'll be able to call upon this skill which I have learned! - gamer31, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wasnt how you do this on the first episode of hak.5? or is it just me.
- vash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I always leave the room when XP is installing. Also, if you have a WD Raptor, the install is quite fast, so there isnt much wait.
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Holy Shift-F10 Batman!!
- nonokiaboy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10EVERYONE KNOWS THIS WAS REVEALED IN HAK.5 !!!!

(I suppose this would be possible with something like espresso from Ubuntu... meh) - SouthernDigger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Install is about the only time i would play windows bundle games. usually i just watch tv... but this is good for those times when your waiting for end of a progress bar to type in more info. i digg
- tk16, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3 Digg for whirlpool. If people don't have anything to do except watch their XP install, then they need a life :P. Create an unattended XP install disk: http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/
- AttroPheed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4This is old. If i had a nickel for every game of solitaire I've played during a windows install i'd already have $100.
- thashiznit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I cant believe it ,when i started that thread i was hardly thinking it would turn into a month long event.. thanks to boofis for clearing this up for everyone..
Happy pinball to every 1 !! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you can use nlite to auto start pinball so you dont have to hit shift-f10

http://www.digg.com/programming/Long-hidden_cheat_for_MS_Pinball_-_with_newbie_reverse_engineering_tutorial - d03boy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Cool. I didn't know you could open a console from the installation screen. That could actually be useful.
- RockOfVictory, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2To save a couple of clicks, here's the direct link to the thread mentioned in this digg:
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=498320&p=6#r112 - peerk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is a known and documented trick. I have no idea why someone would offer a $100 reward for it.
I will give $100000 to the first person who discovers how to open the start menu with out using the mouse or the windows key!
And link directly to the thread people. - treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5OK, let's see some real games during the installation.
Halo, Quake4, UT 2005 .... hehe :) - LeeVal, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Play solitaire on my Dell XPS Renegade

- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2That's fracking awesome. I don't know why I didn't of that. The Vista install even tells you about Shift+F10 to get a command prompt.
Awesome digg. - unitedstatians, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6@Bigcat151 & dink87522 thanks
i currently trying the Windows XP CD "access hole" method has any one had any success with it. Guess what i have found in step number 10 OMG it involves Shift-F10 it been right under my nose.
As long as you have your Windows XP CD, you can get back into your system using a simple but effective method made possible by a little known "access hole" in Windows XP.

- bdpf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Youngsters, the thing in front of you is the keyboard, to the right, is the mouse (it your right handed). Both are input devices. Even thou it's hard to see in windows, you can use the tab key to move around the old desk top. :-) Of coarse there is always a command line, if you can get to it. :-(
Enough of the obvious. I wish to thank the posters of comments for teaching this old dog some new tricks. :-) The enclosed links in the comments were very interesting. Thanks again.
Now for a plug of a good mod. Please don't slam me for it. It deserves to be recognized.
Chaos Empire is a great mod to Diablo II Lord of Destruction which can be on or off line.
Thank you again!

- beaversit.com, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This to me looks like a feeble attempt to Digg a "semi" interesting hack in order to draw advertising revenue. And maybe get people to visit your forum in the process.
Kind of like the self-serving blogger-diggers. You know you who are. -
