- October, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6pffft... a bunch of old software and vsts... Appreciate your enthusiasm and all but maybe you should do some more research before you put up an ad-blog on digg.
The only place to go for VSTis (yeah, the majority ARE free):
http://www.kvraudio.com/
Zynaddsubfx: Killer crossplatform stand alone soft synth: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Audio/Audio-Mixers-Synthesizers/ZynAddSubFX.shtml
Buzzmachines: Excellent FREE music creation suite including vsti HOST:
http://www.buzzmachines.com/
Gungirl Sequencer: http://ggseq.sourceforge.net/HomePage
Audacity sound editor (can work as a multitrack too): http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Kristal Audio: 16 vst enabled multitrack studio: http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/index.php?section=news
ASIO4ALL: Universal ASIO Driver for all soundcards: http://www.asio4all.com/
Crystal VSTi: Possibly the coolest vsti synth that money can't buy: http://www.greenoak.com/crystal/
But hell, if you really want to make music without spending money you should see all the cake the linux guys get to play with:

Caio! - TomRitchford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not particularly comprehensive. Doesn't bother to tell you what platform the software is for: lots of musicians, including myself, are on Macs. Not particularly up-to-date. no digg.
- trqy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Free OSes with all needed apps here:

Free LiveCD for music production here:
http://turkay-live.blogspot.com/2005/12/free-software-dynebolic.html - svartling, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1Uhm.. You go to the creators web page via the "Via" link, and download the software from there. FL Studio is a commercial soft, so you have to buy it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cubase SX3 is free on BT. Enjoy.

~walks away~ - darkalias, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This comes from a Windows only world - no digg.
- Killerah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know, I just had a cool idea, what if somebody took a bunch of the software from this page http://www.linux-sound.org/one-page.html got the author's permission and strung it all together to make a really nice integrated open source audio editing suite? Is that an impossible idea? I think that would be completely awesome. I mean, that is one absurdly long list of software! I'm sure if you took the best of the best and strung them all together with a nice gui you could have something pretty close to professional grade for free!
- Dhalamar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg for the comments, not the article. heh
- Killerah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg for all the awesome programs people are complaining about not having made the list. I didn't know so many existed!

- October, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Huh? Buzzle???? Looks like some sort of spamfest links page!
Tell me you posted that wrong, that in fact there is a life-after-buzzmachines project going on somewhere?!
Now give me the right link!!! :P - ArthurSucks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Free music software is awesome. I hate some software is like $200+. If your studio is a garage, you obviously can't afford that.
- Zissou79, on 01/24/2009, -0/+0Have you checked out www.themusicboard.co.uk They have thousands of music software downloads listed.
- Killerah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"anyone know of a program where you can mix mp3s and 'scratch' them?"
Get TerminatorX, I think that's what you're probably looking for. http://www.djcj.org/LAU/quicktoots/toots/tx_toot/tx_toot1.html I think it's linux only though. - thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Dizz05

- petestv, on 03/06/2009, -0/+0Yeah I tried musicshake and its fine, founded some other ideas at http://www.artistsmusicians.com/blog
- manbag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0alrighty, I need something that is free, not a gay trial or demo, and no virus... here is what I want to do
What I was thinking is that it have a list of instruments and when you click on it, you can drag the notes into the music where you want that note played. I have no idea what most of the stuff here does though.... I just want to make my music... - Voofighter, on 04/23/2009, -0/+0what about the music maker...my personal favourite
