- DJcrayon, on 10/12/2007, -16/+187Theres your problem right there, If I were a software program i wouldn't want to recognize an ABBA CD neither
- DoubtingThomas, on 10/12/2007, -11/+91Yup. Zune, Bush and the PS3. The holy trinity of digg bashing.
- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -15/+72You know, I'm not a Zune fan, but by now, even I am quite shocked at how much grass roots FUD has grown up against the Zune. I know I've participated in Zune bashing, and it is a rather bash-worthy brown brick, but really, of all the Zune stories you see, virtually every genuine story (a.k.a. non Microsoft astroturf) is negative.
Microsoft, if you're listening, take note: Grass-roots FUD is the consequence of pissing off many, many people for a long, long time. Astroturfing can't overcome grassroots FUD. - G_Raph, on 10/12/2007, -8/+57That is really really weird...when I installed my software it picked up all of my 2000+ songs on my computer.
It seems like with the zune software, its all hit or miss with people. Defiantly not a great start for microsoft. - Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -11/+52Oh, just a note. FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt) doesn't have to be made up or untrue; it just sabotages the product when it does come out. In the case of the Zune and PS3, the FUD are not unfounded; they are a direct result of their respective companies' hubris.
- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36Just as I suspected...
"No variable bit rate encoding support in the Zune software"
that is on the con list of every Zune review. Betcha this guy is using VBR mp3s - freff, on 10/12/2007, -15/+45Why do we keep linking blogs as if they were actual news sources?
- fr3nch13, on 10/12/2007, -8/+38Sometimes I wish digg required a credit card, so kids like you couldn't post.
- bohrhead, on 10/12/2007, -9/+34What, buying a Zune?
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -19/+42I see the problem:
"These were all songs ripped from one CD the user had purchased and owns."
Obviously he must've used to really f**ked up encoding to fit 3,000 songs on one CD :D - r121, on 10/12/2007, -8/+29"IAM NOT RESTRICTED ON WINDOWS"
Wow, that laugh just made my day :-) - shadus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25My original thoughts on the Zune still stand... Microsoft can't release new working products, it takes several years in development before their new things work as advertised. Look at any of their past product releases. Next version of the Zune will be far better than this one.
- neuropsychguy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27It's the future (well, actually the present); don't fight the future...
Some blogs are newsworthy, some aren't. Let the community decide. - strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Dancing queen, young and sweet, only 17
That'd get me arrested in my state. - noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Indeed. ABBA have a Greatest Hits CD ("ABBA Gold") that is as full as the CD format will allow (just under 80 mins) with genuine major hits (no filler, which is more than you can say for most "hits" collections), and they still had to leave stuff out.
ABBA were absolutely f****** huge almost everywhere except the U.S. (I think you guys were into Kiss or something at the time).
So there :-P - thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12@StevoCJ
I can. Windows ME. It never got to a release phase, no matter how many versions it went through. - chubbymidget, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16New product stuff like this is bound to happen.
Give MS a chance to do some patches and 1 or 2 new versions and it will be rock solid.
Just look at Windows, a couple of versions later and... ohh crap... - RuffRidr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12No it cannot.
- akinder, on 10/12/2007, -11/+23I think Digg needs a new category "Microsoft Bashing" so we can just put all the stories about Vista and Zune in there.
- marcusb, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17What exactly does this prove? My video iPod does quirky things like displaying album tracks out of order- and this is a product that has been out for a year. Am I to assume Apple is inept and can't write a program that can correctly order numbers ascending? It's a bug- every software and device will have them.
- xjimtx, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19Sounds like user error
- neoform, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Perhaps it's because this is Microsoft's standard business tactics.
They see another company make a product that makes money, they copy it, but don't innovate at all, they just make a straight copy. They incrementally make it just good enough to beat the competition while using their massive market share in the computer world to conquer and destroy. Once they then hold the monopoly in that market, they stagnate and overcharge until everyone gets sick of it and a new competitor arises, repeat.
So don't be so shocked when people get pissed off when they see Microsoft entering a new market where there are already some great products, because all MS does it kill that market and make it worse off than before. - RuffRidr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14No ***** sherlock. The Zune would have been quite ahead of its time then wouldn't it? Wireless was just getting started back then. It would have been quite extraordinary to see it in a MP3 player. Especially of that form factor. And a 30GB hard drive would have blown the doors off of Apple at that time. I bet if you took an Apache helicopter back into the days of the Wright brothers they would look a little foolish too!
- oswell, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15~$3000 spent on DRM encrusted music? The end is nigh.
- shadus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Maybe because so many journalists are in the pockets of the industries they report on 'unaffiliated' people are the only ones seen as reliable?
Fact is they can be just as bought and sold, perhaps easier since their career isn't on the line, but... shrug.
The media is bought. Not every blogger is. - PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Dog ***** > PlaysForSure
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"I can't think of a single MS product where that hasn't been true."
Keyboards - zaqintosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Neko, no the zune does not have a "storage device" feature (that even my Creative Zen Micro player does).
- blinky04, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Microsoft just killed their own "iPod Killer"
- mulling, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12WTF are you talking about? I didn't think MS fanbois existed until I came here.
- StevoCJ, on 10/12/2007, -9/+19But it still won't really work properly until version 3.
In MS-Speak:
Alpha = Version 1
Beta = Version 2
Release = Version 3
I can't think of a single MS product where that hasn't been true. - LtCarter47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10OK, so he starts out with "I installed Zune this morning and am quite happy with the performance of the software." Then the rest of the blog is "this didn't do that" and "I tried this but it didn't seem to fix this other thing." Why is he quite happy with the performance? Doesn't seem like it's working at all for him.
- hackmiester, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13ClassicJBC: You can use Winamp to export to iPods, which is what I do.
- Flamekebab, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12WTF?
No variable bitrate MP3 support?!
I thought this was a new product for 2006, not 1996! - thebrokenlight, on 10/12/2007, -10/+16It's really sad that you think that's all you can do on a Mac. Why don't you read up on these things before making an idiot out of yourself.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Dude, UR so right. The Zune definitely pwns the iPod, especially on Podcasting support. Oh, wait, seems they went with FM radio instead. Good move. Yep, good move.
- halleyscomet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Funny, this was posted a while ago, is about the Zune, has hit the front page, and yet flag564 hasn't logged in yet to tell us what Apple fanboys we all are for dissing the Zune.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -18/+26the big news here is that someone was actually silly enough to buy a Zune.

Don't be such a tool. Your entire post reflects exactly what I dislike when it comes to Apple Vs. Microsoft discussions. From either side. If you want to place an argument one way or the other, get the facts, ask questions, and make damn sure you know what you're talking about before writing or saying something.
IMO, there are two groups here. Those who have a preference, and those who are "fanboys", the latter of which, I and may others despise. Fanboys don't have the facts, don't know what they are talking about, and in general, are idiots. Those who have a preference, do so for a reason, and a good/valid reason at that. Sadly, all too often, I see the first group being mistaken as members of the second group.
I suppose that's just the nature of the Internet though, 'eh? - ryan27406, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I have a zune and it imported all 6,350 song out of 9000 songs from itunes
The rest of the 3000 songs were purchased in itunes
I think the Zune is as good as the iPod and i have both
I think the Zune will have a moderate success but nothing like the iPod has experienced - cleverhanz, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Radio? Like over the air radio? Do people still use that?
- uownedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Just when I think this thread can't get any more saturated with stupid, Vapid comes in and snatches defeat from the claws of victory.
I'll second the need for a subscription (even if it's a one time fee) to be able to post comments. It would greatly filter out the idiots, and leave more room for intelligent conversation.
I don't know about the rest of you guys, but when I click the comments link, I'd like to see: 1. comments about the story, 2. other users experiences with the product, 3. Solutions to the issue or problem at hand.
Is that too much to ask? Survey says: YES.
Witty banter is one thing, and I don't mind it...but the mindless namecalling and fanboyism is terrinble. Just terrible. - jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The xbox was superior to the PS2 in almost everyway: Live, internal HD, dolby digital 5.1 audio, almost every game supported 480p (some even did 720p/1080i), better graphics and load times. Wow, it feels like 2001 all over again.
I'm not a fan of MS (I have a Mac, and love linux), I think the Zune gets a lot wrong, but I LOVE my xbox and xbox 360. It's one product they got right (mostly, I hate MS points).
Try to remember that at a big company like Microsoft, there are different departments, with different people. The xbox people are probably the brightest people at MS. - PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Honest question:
Some of the first-rev bugs in, for example, Apple products stem from that the only testing is done by members of the dev teams because of secrecy.
Did MS try larger scale testing and still manage to suck, or did they make the same mistake? - atgunning, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@Cory - I take it you have never heard of the Unix kernel that OSX is built on? If you hack - which i severely doubt in your case - I would think you would prefer the UNIX command line instead of the windows pseudo-DOS.
But then, your Leet Hacking Programs won't run on a Mac ;-) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Zune sucks balls. Vinyl still rules.
(somebody shoot me) - PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Tell me how it's easier to hack pseudo-DOS than *nix?
Either way, listening to music and editing a movie generally makes my day ;-) - minhaferzz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The Zune does support playback of VBR encoded songs, but it does not support VBR encoding.
- neko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Incidentally, does it work as a USB Mass Storage device?
And will it play .mp3 files transferred to it via UMS?
Honest question. - QueenOfSwords, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yikes! Lets hope that one is only a firmware update away. Seems pretty silly.
