Yahoo! Spider wrecking havoc on website guest tracking

suggestions.yahoo.com — Many web apps track users by IP. Previously, like every other spider out there, Yahoo used one IP to index sites during a given session. Yahoo has recently changed this and is now sending out hundreds of spiders to sites at once, inflating guest counts by as many as 2000 online at times. Forums are being hit especially hard according to IPB & VB

  • AmDebate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'm the one who originally posted the suggestion to Yahoo, and then a follow up. To reiterate what I consider to be the most important part of my comment:

    "Y! could retool to add a site queue utilizing one IP per crawler session, not a separate IP for every request." "In the interest of being a good Internet citizen, Y! should accept the burden of spider management, and not shift that burden to site owners. Expecting site owners to custom-code around Y!'s flaws is unreasonable."
