- AdamTReineke, on 05/12/2008, -3/+61Congrats to the XBMC team for porting this amazing program to Mac. I've had it running on my Xbox for nearly a year, and I couldn't live without it.
- Ocelot13, on 05/12/2008, -1/+54xbmc is the only reason my regular xbox gets any use anymore.
- maxrogers, on 05/12/2008, -0/+44Why throw your XBOX out and use OSXBMC you ask?
Well 1080p HD of course!!!
Have it, Love it!!! - deadbaby, on 05/12/2008, -3/+34Sweetie, XBMC isn't a DVR app. Please let the grown ups talk now honey. Go play with your firetruck and action figures.
- jordn, on 05/12/2008, -0/+30Once again a big congrats to the dev team behind XBMC. Just given it a quick run to see if it stands up to the Xbox legacy, and it's doing pretty damn good.
On a related note, has anyone heard any news on the Linux port? - jihadjohnson, on 05/12/2008, -1/+27Me wants an good Ubuntu version (there is one but its buggy), but this is cool too. :-)
- Jeffler, on 05/12/2008, -1/+25....
....
brb buying mac mini - Acglaphotis, on 05/12/2008, -2/+20There is also a Linux port, for those of you who care.
- kris33, on 05/12/2008, -2/+18The team didn't port it, a single guy (Elan) did (with a lot of help from the LiNXBMC project ofc).
- alittleroy101, on 05/13/2008, -0/+12Your xbox can't play HD movies.
- codelogic, on 05/12/2008, -0/+11The team ported the Xbox version of XBMC to Linux using SDL, OpenGL and other platform independent libraries. That's how it got ported not only to OS X but also Windows. There are now Linux, Mac and Windows builds of XBMC. So, a single guy didn't really port it.
- veriix, on 05/13/2008, -3/+15Vanity, thy name is an apple customer.
- AshsToAshs, on 05/12/2008, -1/+13Cant wait for the Linux port to become final.
- FDL1, on 05/12/2008, -0/+12I guess everyone forgot the Linux port?
http://xbmc.org/wiki/?title=Linux_port_project - BLKMGK, on 05/13/2008, -0/+10This is an SDL port of the Linux version! The Linux version ain't that buggy - I've been using it for HD content for months now!
- monkeyman67156, on 05/13/2008, -0/+10They're 99.9% exactly the same. If there's a bug in one, it's most likely in the other
- xdeliriumx, on 05/12/2008, -4/+18Now officially jealous of 2 mac programs... this and Connect 360 (or Rivet).
- slothlovechunk, on 05/12/2008, -2/+15buy the mini
- shtonkalot, on 05/12/2008, -0/+10Yep, finally playing back high def should be doable with XBMC.
Won't be throwing out the xbox but I may move it to an older TV and finally have a good excuse to purchase a mac mini. - carlosos, on 05/12/2008, -0/+9The program exists also for windows, linux (the osx version is based on the linux port) and the xbox.
- BLKMGK, on 05/13/2008, -0/+8This is a port of the Linux SDL port. This in a sense IS the Linux version. The Linux version works well, plays HD, multi-core decoding, Lirc runs the remote fine, and you get 5.1 surround. Is hooked to my TV right now - LOVE it!
- happycat, on 05/12/2008, -2/+12I use Front Row mainly to play vids and some DVD's, and my music is handled by itunes. These are two apps that are simple to use and do what I want without adding layers of complexity. Although it looks great, what advantage does XMBCOSX give me over FR & Itunes? (ya I'm being too lazy to look it up myself)
- carl689, on 05/12/2008, -0/+8You can watch MythTV in XBMC, dont think the plugin is finished but it is there. Consider XBMC more of an enhanced front end.
- PabloMac, on 05/12/2008, -0/+8It's the basement mold, I tell ya.
- PainToad, on 05/12/2008, -5/+14Me wants PPC port :(
- TechCF, on 05/13/2008, -0/+7Your 733mhz celeron is keeping you back
- kris33, on 05/12/2008, -0/+7or just try the windows port
- codelogic, on 05/13/2008, -0/+8Mac mini can handle most popular 1080p content. Some scenes that are extremely high bitrate can give it some trouble but for the most part it does a good job.
- lonelycoo, on 05/12/2008, -0/+8It does in the most recent version, im pretty sure.
Updated mine yesterday.. - marx2k, on 05/13/2008, -0/+6Sorry, you have to mention Airtunes 4 times in order to gain support. 3 doesn't cut it
- arcticblue, on 05/13/2008, -0/+7The xbox version of XBMC does not require you to install Linux. It runs natively on the Xbox. The Linux port was actually the first port. The others spawned off the Linux port.
- khaavren, on 05/13/2008, -0/+6I agree its absolutely awesome still to this day.
- harryterry, on 05/12/2008, -0/+9Connect 360 is an awesome program. The only problem that I have is that it doesn't sort with folders... :(
- inactive, on 05/12/2008, -1/+9For those who have never tried out or used XMBC... it is awesome. Once you use it... you will never go back to Windows Media Center or any other media center for that matter.
- AzzX, on 05/12/2008, -1/+7There is also ports for Windows, Linux as well as the original xbox one.
- srg13, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5There is a Linux version - it's very, very similar to the Mac OS one - in fact, without the Linux version (which came first), the Mac OS version would not have been made.
- ferrite, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5Ok, you're a bit arrogant, but I'll feed the troll.
1)There already are ports for Windows and Linux and have been for some time, this article is comparing it to Apple's Front Row and why they believe XBMC is better (read the article or other people's posts here on digg and you would have learned that ages ago)
2)NASA doesn't upgrade their CPU's in the shuttle's very often, most of them still use 386 processors (mostly because they're pretty hardly, but also because they don't wanna ***** with it if it works just fine and making custom parts is a PITA). A good size chunk of the ground computer linux (as well as much more modern hardware)
3)Again, there is a windows and linux port available if your dumb ass would even bother looking.
4)Media centers are pretty useful for people who use more than one computer (or for families) since you can SHARE movies, TV, music, etc... without having 5 or 6 copies of the same file spread across your network (it's less "wasteful" than copying everything everytime, it adds to wear and tear and wastes time). Just because you don't need it doesn't mean it's dumb.
5)I have an HDTV and an SDTV, and several different monitors of different sizes, if my media is in the best looking quality possible on all of those, I'm happy.
6)Running a Pirate TV Station is a really bad idea. A prison rapable idea. Plus you can only watch one thing at a time.
7)You are an idiot. - mattd, on 05/12/2008, -1/+7XBMC + AppleTV = I'm Sold
XBMC on my old xbox was a goldmine of usefulness. It played every format of video/audio you could throw at it. DVD Menus right out of dvd isos. - bobbarkerbilly, on 05/12/2008, -0/+6XBMC is not a DVR app. It's interface is smooth, responsive, smart, and plays any music or video file you throw at it. Playing old school Sega, Nintendo, TG16 Roms is also a hell of a lot of fun and easy to do.
- theaverageidiot, on 05/12/2008, -1/+6YES! I've been wanting this for forever!
XBMC is the best thing. Ever. - whahaa, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5i downloaded and installed the windows version just now via a self-extracting exe.
took about 5min. easy breezy. runs great. - bobbarkerbilly, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4Ignorant speaking ignorance.
- zoid, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4Same here.. would let the old mini have a new life.
- BLKMGK, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4The old Windows port was designed for Skin builders ONLY. The current Windows port is an SDL port to Windows from Linux just like the OSX is an SDL port from Linux. I've nto tried it myself but it's apparently decent - probably not quite as good as the OSX or Linux port though. It's coming along though so if you "must" have Windows try it out. Personally I find the Ubuntu version easy to install and I'm *not* a Linux pro...
- monkeyman67156, on 05/13/2008, -1/+5Yes, we've been working for some time to port it to other platforms. (It's not LiNXBMC, its XBMC for Linux).
- BLKMGK, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4Why in this world wait for the final?! It rocks pretty good right now - there's even a package install version if compiling from SVN is too hard for you. I am fairly poor at Linux but I had no issues setitng it up on my system - love it. Rip HD-DVD and BD all the time and play them from my server. Works great!
- codelogic, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4XBMC can stream stuff to the 360 FYI. And Winamp? Seriously, that's like comparing iTunes to XBMC. They're totally different.
- whahaa, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4and here's the windows installer link btw
http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=32973 - systimax, on 05/12/2008, -1/+4The only thing it doesn't have going for it is iTunes integration. No daap support with iTunes 7
Sure you can get to a samba or other share and browse the itunes dir.
But its nice to be able to get podcast in a neat order with descriptions plus play list and other items supported by things like the apple tv.
FYI I know its not xbmc's fault its apple. Just pointing it out. - Tenoq, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3Winamp doesn't have a 10ft interface. Even in super-happy-large-icon-mode it's still not very good as a media centre - and it can't easily be controlled and manipulated with a remote.
Completely different products, actually. :p -
