- saysaknow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Make sure to backup.

I don't see how phpMyAdmin is absolutely necessary if the Wordpress back up way works. - ctheory, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Well, at least they patch. Cheers to that.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wordpress is the best CMS. So easy to use and so userfriendly.

http://xtaur.us - Scourge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4WordPress has one of the easiest and straight forward upgrade procedures.
- TugsMcgroin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I don't have that problem. But I'm happy wordpress is releasing their fixes when they need to. Instead of every 4th Thursday or whatever MS does.
- Bassguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree. I dislike updating, but I feel good knowing that the CMS that I use patches as much as they can, as soon as they can.
- Vortech89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Updated this morning. I really like how WordPress has the latest news right in the admin panel.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"The problems addressed are unannounced XSS issues privately discovered and reported to the WordPress team. Thanks to Mark Jaquith, Robert Deaton, and David House for assisting with this release."
- peorth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why is the parent buried down? It's a known bug, which has been fixed...
- BillyG123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thx Lord (lol), not sure I want to go there...
Mark, as I said, the backup is not the problem, it's the restore part.
Even if the next update does come with a backup plugin (yes, there are several out there), without a solid restore scenario setup, it's false security IMO. I'm not bitchin, I just want to know how to set it up.
One day, somebody smarter than me will setup a restore plugin and we will live happily ever after.
FYI: I lost al my data in the past when I would get the white screen of death (WSOD) and didn't know that all I had to do was go BACK in the browser and repair it one way or another (which I've worked thru successfully several times since) so I shouldn't have any data loss problems in the future except for installation of a bad plugin or just GP (which is why I really treat my del.icio.us account as my true off-site backup, which I also backup thru a bookmarklet and now a manual (for now) OPML save) - santaclaws, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Check it: http://trac.wordpress.org/ticket/2379
They were not planning on releasing the fix in this release -- they were going to wait until 2.1.
Agreed that it's good there's an update, but this should have been caught in QA. - Bizbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice to see that they are keeping on their toes with the patches and updates.
- santaclaws, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This also fixes the "slight problem" of your RSS feeds displaying only user comments (as opposed to posts)
- BillyG123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been tweaking my theme all day and didn't even notice that addition to my Dashboard panel!
I hope they decide to make security updates blink in the future or something.
That being said, I've lost my blog data on every update. It doesn't matter how many backup tools there are, none that I know of do a restore so what good are they? Even then, you have to be phpMyAdmin knowledgeable or have a host that will work with you (neither one a case for me). I know, learn phpMyAdmin but books are too general and even though I have one for AMP 600 pages long, I still haven't gotten a backup scenario setup.
That being said, I still love WP and long for a restore plugin or my brain growing in size, enough to setup a restore process for myself and until then, I am extremely scared to do another upgrade, only to lose everything again, no matter how easy the instructions make it sound. G/L and hammer away lol. - Lacero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm new to Wordpress after my ISP switched me over to a new server and I was playing around with some of the blogging tools. They're great. I understand why so many people blog -- it can be addictive. However, the upgrade procedure seems pretty hairy. I don't want to lose any of my blogs. Oh well, so much for user friendliness.
- mboman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My biggest concern I have about this release is that they didn't credit me for finding, reporting and providing a patch for an XSS vulnerability I discovered. This is something I would kind of expect from some proparitary software vendors out there, but not one of the better known open source projects. If that doesn't going to change I'll start selling my exploits to the highest bidder.
Anyway, I've scheduled release of my original blog entry, which I un-published when asked by the wordpress developers, with exploit code to be released on the 17th March at midnight.
[plug type=shameless]You can visit my blog at http://proxy.11a.nu and the blog entry in question will show up at http://proxy.11a.nu/2006/03/17/xss-in-wordpress-201/ [/plug] - lordatlas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Visit the WordPress Wank for the not-so-pleasant side of WP:

For instance, their non-functioning forum search: http://wank.wordpress.com/2006/03/07/a-thousand-words/ - d4ly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Learning to click the export tab followed by a submit button on the corresponding page to back your data up isn't very difficult...
- MarkJaquith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Better notification of WordPress updates (actually, probably for plugins too) is definitely on my short list of stuff to get into WP 2.1.
What blog data did you lose during the update? That sounds very strange. WordPress shouldn't be doing anything that could cause you to lose posts or comments or anything like that.
WordPress now comes bundled with a backup plugin. WordPress 2.1 is getting "pseudo cron" functionality (and the WP-Cron plugin for WordPress 2.0.x works fine) so that you can run this backup nightly. I have it e-mail the database to a special Gmail account every night, so I'm covered. - BillyG123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Export tab where? I'll assume you mean the phpMyAdmin panel but even though I have that unzipped to a folder on my HD, I don't see how to get the GUI like I had when using XAMPP in the past. I know this isn't the forum (they don't even answer registration request emails at Sourceforge to ask anything from what I've seen), so if anybody could help me on this, I would really appreciate it but if you're just gonna be a smartass, please don't waste my time. billy_at_the_beach@yahoo.com
