- sven423, on 02/08/2008, -4/+69So, who will be the first to test it with Wine? ;-)
- Wrathernaut, on 02/08/2008, -1/+46The sideways smilies called, they say they never left.
- sajnikanth, on 02/08/2008, -6/+44itunes must be crapping in its pants
- nhnFreespirit, on 02/08/2008, -2/+39It is our hope that trying out this preview will inspire people with developer aspirations to come help make Amarok 2 the best music player on any platform!
Ever so slightly ambitious, we know... :-) - nitsnipe, on 02/08/2008, -1/+35For those who don't know, Amarok is one of the best music players/managers ever. And this is coming from a windows fan( yes, there is such a thing).
- andycr512, on 02/08/2008, -3/+33As opposed to a bloated mac/windows audio player with no major portable device support? I should point out that iTunes only supports iPods, while Amarok supports iPods and hundreds of other players.
- enr1x, on 02/08/2008, -2/+27Good news everyone!
- n0ah420, on 02/08/2008, -1/+25amarok
- Sairgem, on 02/08/2008, -1/+19Sorry to disappoint you, but people still use sideways smileys. :D
- 4DFX, on 02/08/2008, -4/+22This is KDE now... they're called sKreenshots
- heavyd14, on 02/08/2008, -3/+20Pre-Alpha, not finished? ORLY?
- Awspire, on 02/08/2008, -2/+19:(
- andycr512, on 02/08/2008, -0/+14"Major portable device support? iPod is the leader in portable players. :P"
You can say that all you wish, but it does not change the fact that Amarok supports hundreds or thousands more MP3 players than iTunes does. - mattus, on 02/08/2008, -5/+18Who really cares? At a time when 2GB is pretty much standard, there's no point squabbling over an extra 10-20MB RAM.
- BlaenkDenum, on 02/08/2008, -1/+13Sweet! Any chance we might get K3b on windows too? That's my absolute favorite KDE application!
- markey, on 02/08/2008, -2/+14Yeah, coming soon. Stay tuned.
- morguth, on 02/08/2008, -1/+11:Þ
- tpink, on 02/08/2008, -1/+1120MB is just under 1% of 2GB. If you're going to compare foobar2000 and Amarok, compare them on tangible merits like "Which one is a better media player for me?", not "Which one uses 0.5% of my RAM vs. 1% of my RAM?".
- dualscreenman, on 02/08/2008, -1/+11Awesomeness. :o
- iofthestorm, on 02/08/2008, -0/+9However unlikely that is, the opposite is much more likely: people using Amarok, finding out how good it is, and then switching to Linux/KDE4 to see the other great things KDE has to offer. Also, it makes the migration path much easier.
- VinceNoir, on 02/08/2008, -5/+14iTunes just plain sucks unless you're a retarded troglodyte who hates think.
- 4DFX, on 02/08/2008, -0/+9... except the "only 10 mb of ram" part. Sorry, but if we're completely honest, Amarok uses much more than that.
- eean, on 02/08/2008, -0/+9KDE is natively ported to Windows.
- eFiniTi, on 02/08/2008, -0/+9Mine only runs at 20mb (in linux, mind you) and its more than twice as feature rich as foobar. And looks pretty. :)
- Awspire, on 02/08/2008, -2/+11;)
- codyman, on 02/08/2008, -7/+15I'll try it for sure.. but I am kinda in a serious relationship with foobar2000 right now cause what else can have mp3, aac, flac, and dts files, all in the same playlist...? and use only 10 mb of ram
- magila, on 02/08/2008, -0/+8@mattus
Some people like to, you know, run more than one application at a time. Sure it's "only" 20mb, but when every app on your system starts using an extra 20mb here and there it tends to add up. This is especially true for stuff like music players which are highly likely to be left running in the background. - renegadeafk, on 02/08/2008, -1/+8screenshots?
- andycr512, on 02/08/2008, -2/+9Yes, but he said in true Linux fashion. GP pointed out that it isn't difficult on Linux, so the point is invalid.
- bagboyrebel, on 02/08/2008, -0/+7-_- wait, I mean :)
- LinuxGalore, on 02/08/2008, -1/+7I love Amarok, I use it to sync all my podcasts with my 5G iPOD "automatically" and it even downloads/manages album cover artwork too. Ive used a few music managers over the years (even iBloated iTunes) and I always go back to Amarok for its functionality and its funky (like firefox) plugins. On a side note there is also a "full screen mode" so your system looks like a media player plugin, well worth playing with.
- eean, on 02/08/2008, -0/+6Yea, if only we had some sort of library that could make that easy.
Oh wait, we do, it's called Qt, and its what KDE and Amarok use. :| - jjpertusch, on 02/08/2008, -5/+11and in true linux fashion the install is a summabitch
- digerati1338, on 02/08/2008, -2/+7You do realize that K3B is only a front-end to cdrecord?
- robojerk, on 02/08/2008, -0/+5Download the KDE installer, when you get to the package section just choose amarok, it will get all dependancies for you.
I do agree though that there should be a standalone installer instead of package. I'm not sure if I can recommend amarok to friends that are not tech savvy, the cygwin like installer will scare them away. - duccodude, on 02/08/2008, -2/+7:P
- OhFrak, on 02/08/2008, -0/+5"itunes must be crapping in its pants"
Pictures Amarok as the two FBI guys in Die Hard... - Hydrogen, on 02/08/2008, -0/+4And be seriously stupid.
Porting everything over to the win32 api just so that you don't have to install libraries would take a huge amount of development time and effort that could be better spent working on making Amarok better. It's not going to happen. - eean, on 02/08/2008, -0/+3It's a frontend to more then just cdrecord.
But it is a frontend to a lot of unix cd/dvd recording stuff, yea. - toaste, on 02/08/2008, -5/+8It's unlikely that iTunes is in much trouble yet. I've always liked Amarok 1.4.x, but the pre-alpha 2.0 is still unfinished:
1) New playlist view isn't very sortable, and the half-done "classic view" lacks most of the fields found in the old version
2) Won't build a collection on my machine
3) Problems sorting new playlist
When done, it will a decent player, but until it catches back up with its predecessor it's probably not for me.
4) Context view hasn't displayed anything for me - thepxc, on 02/08/2008, -2/+5Actually, for this it's "apt-get install amarok2" and that might only be for Ubuntu. This guy was clearly talking about the Windows install, anyway.
- VinceNoir, on 02/08/2008, -2/+5Marvin: They're called "emoticons". Combine emotion + icon and you get emoticon. Quite stupid really. (Heads down the corridor to sulk)
- jshabad00, on 02/08/2008, -2/+5No RTFA?
- Ellipsys, on 02/08/2008, -4/+7Can it manage/transfer to an iPod Touch or iPhone yet? If so, I'm downloading even if the UI looks like something out of a 1996 geocities page.
- inactive, on 02/08/2008, -1/+3Its called amarok!
Oh *****, thought loop. - roflcaeks, on 02/08/2008, -1/+3yeah because a majority of people use linux JUST for amarok amirite?
- inactive, on 02/08/2008, -0/+2The release version with "tech preview" should give you some sort of hint that this isn't intended for end users.
- Zaggynl, on 02/08/2008, -0/+2a man of the mid....I mean, KDE Amarok!
- inactive, on 02/08/2008, -1/+3If we're completely honest, foobar2000 uses much more than that too if it's configured in anything beyond its default UI.
- HorseloverFat8, on 02/09/2008, -0/+2Is that you, Professor Farnsworth?
