- aldenhg, on 10/31/2007, -37/+519There's this one egg where if you're just using Windows and you have an external drive with a FAT32 filesystem Windows will do this crazy and hilarious thing and make the screen go blue with a bunch of funny text that says things like CRITICAL ERROR and FATAL STOP - but just for a second, so you have to read fast. After that, the computer restarts and get this - all the data on the FAT32 external is messed up and unrecoverable! I LAUGHED FOR ***** DAYS.
- mikewhite314, on 10/21/2007, -4/+186Just in case:
Windows Xp has hidden messages or features in certain applications, games and operating system tools. Here are a few of them:
Minesweeper:
How to reveal Mines in the game:
1. First Minimize or close all running applications.
2. Start the Minesweeper game from the start menu.
3. Type ‘xyzzy’ and hold down the shift key for one second.
4. Now move the cursor over a Minesweeper square you will notice a tiny white pixel in the top left corner of your desktop screen. This pixel will change to black when your mouse moves over a mine. Make sure you don’t have a white or black color desktop!
Stopping Time count during game play
1. Launch Minesweeper and start a game so the timer starts counting, then press the Windows Key + D to show the desktop.
2. Select minesweeper from the taskbar and you’ll notice that the time has stopped.
FreeCell
Wanna win a Free cell game instantly?? Start a new game and Hold down Ctrl + Shift + F10 during game play. Then you will be asked if you want to Abort, Retry or Ignore. Select Abort, and then move any card to win the game.
In Notepad:
1. Launch Notepad, Type .LOG on the first line, and then press Enter to move to the next line.
2. On the File menu, click Save As, give any name as you like and save the file and close it.
3. Open the file again, youll notice that that the date and time have been appended to the end of the log.
In Paint:(Getting 10x Zoom)
Open an image and select the magnifying glass icon. Left-Click exactly on the line below the 8x.
In Defragmenter:
Defrag
Theres a Hidden Command Line Switch, in order to find out start the defragmenter and Type defrag c: -b to defragment the Boot and Application Prefetch information.
Pinball secrets:
1. Type 1max at the start of a new ball to get extra balls.
2. Type gmax at the start of a new game to activate the Gravity Well.
3. Type rmax at the start of a new game to go up in ranks.
4. Type bmax at the start of a new ball. This will give you unlimited balls. Once this is activated you will be unable to activate other secrets without restarting the game. - TritonX, on 10/15/2007, -6/+158This one is a feature.

- inactive, on 10/31/2007, -0/+90Well you could just use Windows Explorer and just go to that folder. Also its a WMA file, not an MP3. Im going to be leaving now.

- bradleyland, on 10/17/2007, -0/+51Why is it so hard to type the backslashes?
C:\WINDOWS\system32\oobe\images - HHP2K, on 10/31/2007, -5/+51That's the music that comes on when you're going through the second blue screen setting up XP.
- bhattsan, on 10/15/2007, -9/+53Wow. "The connection was reset" is a pretty good easter egg
- inactive, on 10/17/2007, -0/+41✔
- swanny89, on 10/15/2007, -0/+36Theres also a cheat for pinball where you type "hidden test" and press enter. This allows you to control the ball by clicking and dragging within the pinball window.
- adrianmonk, on 10/14/2007, -1/+37It was well-publicized that Microsoft hired Brian Eno to compose music for Windows 95. He composed "The Microsoft Sound", which is what played when Windows 95 started up. They paid him a lot of money. I'm sure this is related.
On a side note, occasionally Microsoft pulls off something good. Hiring Eno was a pretty smart move, because this type of thing was right up his alley artistically. In addition to regular mainstream music, Eno has done a lot of environmental music (not "save the Earth" music; music for environments that people live and work in), for example "Music for Airports". He actually coined the term "ambient music". - zeeky, on 10/17/2007, -5/+39THIS COMMENT SYSTEM SUCKS!
- aldenhg, on 10/31/2007, -5/+39Thanks for not getting the joke.
I know all of that - I'm a computer tech. I'm just making light of a situation that people find themselves in sometimes.
BTW, if you're going to accuse me of being a clueless dolt you could at least use the proper form of "you're." Also, you could have picked on me for using a non-journaled file system because a journal would have saved my ass. Also, it's not FUD because it was in fact the HID drivers which are supplied by - you guessed it - Microsoft.
To summarize, I am not the troll here and I probably know more than you about the situation and what caused it. Also, at the time I'm writing this my comment has 178 diggs and yours has -1, and I haven't buried it. Yet. Oh, look - now you're at -3. I guess that makes 4 people so far who think you're an idiot. - purty707, on 10/15/2007, -15/+47Want an mp3?
run this: C:WINDOWSsystem32oobeimages
find "title" mp3 by Brian Eno (soundtrack for 28 days later)
drag it to desktop
listen to it. - inactive, on 10/15/2007, -3/+34So, not only do you (and everyone who dugg this boneheaded comment up) sound hypocritical, but you sound completely ignorant. Every ime someone uses music they are not doing it illegally. You really think that Microsoft wouldn't license the music?

Type "hidden test". Now you can drag the pinball around with your mouse! Get all those bonuses you were never able to get. - wageslaven, on 10/14/2007, -5/+24"I'm not really a praying man, but if you're up there, god, please let the RIAA sue Microsoft over this." Why dont you send Steve Jobs an email? He is the largest single shareholder, and sits on the board of one of the RIAA firms most responsible for the present state of American Copyright and IP law. One of the most zealous anti-fair use, and copyright extension lobbyist firms; Disney Corporation.
Dont ever think that Jobs is some anti RIAA / MPAA crusader -- he sits on their board, and has the largest number of shares of any individual or firm. Apple fans are getting in bed with Apple for Media Download future is a *BIG* mistake.
No Apple product will ever do anything more than the RIAA / MPAA wishes. If you want to be rid of the RIAA / MPAA clutches, then for god sake, _DO NOT BUY APPLE_ products. - g2g079, on 10/14/2007, -1/+19This one is better http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/XPSecrets. ...
- shawnanigans, on 10/14/2007, -0/+18Seriously, you think you could trick people on digg to delete system files? What's the next trick? "Hey guys press alt+f4 with this window open to see a picture of a teddy bear with clothespins on it nipples."

- jorgepblank, on 10/14/2007, -0/+16Usually, what are considered 'cheats' by the end user are usually just debugging methods for the developers. It's not that the developers actually go through the trouble of creating cheats; they create debugging methods to help them out while writing their game.
Some ARE created for the purpose of being cheats, though :) - aldenhg, on 10/16/2007, -0/+14Trel, I'm adding you as my first Digg friend just for that diagram.
- ragnarok, on 10/14/2007, -1/+15to correct you, that song is not from 28 days later. that is a song by the group Enigma

- theaceoffire, on 10/14/2007, -0/+9Ok, this is what you do.
1. Get on a friends computer, and copy their "win.ini" and "system.ini" files to a floppy, thumb drive, or cd.
2. Download a copy of ubuntu on your friends computer and burn it to a disk.
3. Boot from the ubuntu cd, and drag your "win.ini" and "system.ini" files to your computers windows folder.
Sorry, he was trying to mess your system up. If you already knew this, feel free to laugh at me. - TheZorch, on 10/14/2007, -4/+13Probably running Windows on that web server.
- inactive, on 10/14/2007, -0/+9I deleted win.inin and system.ini but what do I do now? My computer won't start up? Please help.
- inactive, on 10/14/2007, -4/+12Mmmm eggs... tasty.
- aldenhg, on 10/14/2007, -2/+10Wow. You were either born without a sense of humor or you want all your comments to get buried. I'm guessing you're the one who is perpetuating the angry nerd stereotype I've been trying so hard to break. Thanks, because you're singlehandedly delaying the progress of mankind as a species. I hope you're happy.
- schoate09, on 10/14/2007, -0/+7Diskeeper is an extension to the Windows defragmenter, it runs under the administrative framework, so it replaces Defrag.exe

- aaronm67, on 10/14/2007, -0/+7They would have to be pretty insanely large magnets to have any negative effect on the computer
- HHP2K, on 10/14/2007, -1/+8That's funny, but you know some noob is going to do that to his awesome gaming rig and make it explode.
- Memitim, on 10/31/2007, -0/+7It was practice for the Vista interface. :)
