- SuperSloth, on 10/12/2007, -10/+22Of course he's done something to it, dimwit. The Windows XP version prohibits more than one concurrent connection. This is to make you go buy Win2k3 Server for Terminal Services. Just like Win2k Pro is a stripped version of Win2k Server. MS doesn't develop two products that do the same thing if they don't have to. They develop it once and then set a flag that disable the major feature.
This is why, for example, that the TCP/IP stack in WinXP has a 10 half-open connection limit, and a hard limit of 10 NetBIOS connections. They don't want you using WinXP as a file server or web server (people did this with Win2k Pro). There are other limits in IIS 5.1 that make it unacceptable as a business-grade web server. They don't want you using WinXP as a Terminal Services host, so they limit it to one connection to force you to buy a server liscense.
It's not that difficult people. If you want server functionality, you pay the server price tag.
Your other option is to use Linux. And there if you want enterprise support you still pay money. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10It's too bad that the new DMCA law would make this type of hack highly illegal. You might even goto jail for it.
- flip79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You can download it also from anywhere, it's the 5.1.2600.2055 version (from Windows XP SP2 RC1, if I remember).
- WageDonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5One think that the website left out is that this won't work a computer that is joined to the domain. SO for Home /media center computer this is great, but in the work environment no so handy
- kblsNbits, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I did this a while ago... very handy. But it's important to note that SP2 only - and 3 concurrent (logged in, active) users max. You can use some of the more advanced options for the TermServ client under gpedit to further control the connections. I setup my "shared" XP box to disconnect after 15 mins of inactivity.
- dwight0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i love you more. lets cuddle.
- tearinox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6i love you
- snifer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4An easier way is to use Sala's Terminal Server patch, as posted in the blog's comments. Get it from http://sala.pri.ee/terminal-server-patch/
- SDNick484, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yep, I recall trying the SP2 beta solely for this function; I was disappointed it was omitted from the final version and ended up doing this "hack" to fix it a while ago. Although I often am just lazy and use VNC instead of patching new machines.
- eLiTeGoodGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yeah after doing more research I see that... Thanks
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Count on 3 sessions max. I'm currently using XP Pro as a server and using this hack to let certain people run a Foxpro application remotely, since Foxpro over a file share isn't so snappy. What's really squirrely, is sometimes an extra logon will kick off other people without warning, sometimes it asks for permission nicely, sometimes it just won't let you connect. Beta software, hmmph. BTW, your local desktop counts as a logon. I believe rudely disconnected sessions are preserved, though (depending upon your settings).
Since we can get Win2K3 Server/Terminal Server cheap (and legal), I'm just going to switch to that with a 15 user license as soon as the budget rolls around. - tihp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If you legally purchased a software, you have every rights to do whatever you want with it. Go read http://cr.yp.to/softwarelaw.html if you don't believe me. Microsoft can't restrict what you can or cannot do unless you have a signed legal binding with them (EULA doesn't have this power).
- diggeddugg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If I have media center, does this mean I could effectively stream content to another PC, or is this limited to less frame rate intensive applications?
- painkillr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the .dll he offers is digitally signed by MS. also, the article indicates that the dll came from a beta version of XP's SP2. so no, he hasn't touched the file in any way
- s-m-a-c-k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no won't work until (if) bobsled comes out... the media center extender is basically a superset of the RDP protocol... video data is sent in a seperate stream... there is talk of MCE extender that runs on actual PCs, its codenamed bobsled...
check out thegreenbutton.com for more info... thats were I found out about this hack/workaround a while back... - gekkokid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1videolan streams over the network
- joeanon, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1I'm pretty sure EULA is mostly considered a legally binding agreement.
In this case IT IS ILLEGAL because you are bypassing buying Windows Server and the licenses to legally allow you to run that many users.
It's exactly the same a pirating windows because you're not using a legal key per user.
If you don't think that's illegal, call up the police and ask them to charge you and tell us what happens.
In all reality you don't have the legal right to alter a commercial product to get features, especially when those features are clearly in more expensive versions.
However, I wouldn't let that stop you, MS could care less about terminal services hacks. They are getting owned in global OS piracy as are all software companies. The least of their concerns are this hack which has been out for years. - toasterweasel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2We have it running on a box at work and we were able to do up to 6 connections at one point. Recently we've been limited to 3. We've been applying Windows updates so I'm not sure if Microsoft did something to break it just a little at some point. That way you'll shell out the money for Server. Cool hack though. Very useful.
- JimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've been running this version of the dll for some time now, and I seem to be stuck with only 3 users being able to log in at the same time. It doesn't matter what I set the num connections to in the security policy. Can anyone else confirm this?
It's a problem for me, because with me and the XBOX360 logged in, it can cause problems. For example the other day, I was jumping between the Admin and my account to do some work, and along with the XBOX, that was stopping my son from logging in. - youareretarded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Awesome!!
This will come in handy when doing computer maintenance. - dextroz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1man.. no one wants to cuddle with me :-(
- gxti, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5By "done anything" he was referring to planting trojan horses, etc in the file. Either way, it's still quite illegal to distribute it whether it's been modified or not and I wouldn't be surprised if this guy gets served :P
- tdaddy11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cerebral, you're probably thinking of WinConnect.

- Genma, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3oh the joys of marketing. that's how MS makes the cash, they basically took win2k and subtracted some functionality, while adding some other pretty features... and bam, 2 new products to sell. XP gets released as the pretty but crippled version of win2k, so we get 5 products in 1! we have win2k, win2k Pro, win2k Server, XP, and XP Pro - all the same nt5.
don't worry about it, there's an XP patch for tcp/ip too, to open up the stack. I just stick with win2k so I don't have to patch nothin. except for the 1000's of updates MS puts out. - webXL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2is there a 64-bit version available?
- Jams, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Is this not illegal though?
- merdely, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just gave this a shot. Very slick. Very easy.
- youareretarded, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Never mind I got it.
Apparently you need fast user switching enabled. - pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Unfortunately, the work environment is where I could use this most ....
- merdely, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Windows XP Home does not include Remote Desktop.
- stonebear, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1WOOHOO! Thanks a million flip79. :^)
- youareretarded, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's not working for me:(
I have winxp pro and my dllcache folder did not have a termsrv.dll file but I copied the beta one there anyway as well as to the system32 folder.
I did the registry edit and rebooted (as well as all the other steps).
I still can only connect one at a time. Any ideas? All accounts are admin accounts, no domain, just a workgroup. - bigdoug2005, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think it would be easier to get orb to do that
http://www.orb.com/ - youareretarded, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1To be more specific:
start-->run, type: tscon.exe 0 /dest:console - mabino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Does anyone know if swapping this file and restarting the necessary services will work temporarily on a live system? I'd use it if I could deploy it on demand via WMI and then remove it as not to conflict with any subsequent Windows updates.
- desktopmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know that I really like the idea of putting an "unrestricted" version of the terminal services dll on my machine. Sounds like an open invitation to a backdoor.
- alex288288, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0an interesting hack...lol......i might try it. :)
- kickarse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This won't work in a Domain Environment unless you change a registry key with the login script. Even then it might not work with some pc's...
This is old news anyways... - 1310nm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0....that's what I was asking.
- fmarkos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Anything similar for XP home?
VNC is too slow... - Cerebral, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Actually I remember reading about how there is a company that sells software to setup everything for you and their claim was that with 1 Windows XP Pro machine you can have 10 terminals use it. Does anyone know what I am referring to... I feel like I saw that in one of those like eweek mags.
- barryhiggins3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I'm no expert in software law but isn't reverse engineering or de-compiling software considered to be theft of Intellectual Property.
Likewise if I go out and buy an Xbox then install a Mod chip in it, that’s technically not illegal. But if I then load a hacked version of the Microsoft’s Xbox BIOS onto it (that allows me to circumvent copyright protection)...that IS Illegal. Even if I personally hack the BIOS, build the chip myself and don't play any pirated games or load/run any other software on to it. The crucial thing is it's now running the hacked BIOS which is basically just reverse engineered software. - tange1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1WTF...I think your right wagedonkey, it doesn't seem to work on a xp pro machine that is joined to a domain. Even for logging in w/ a local account.
That blows! - master_of_fm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1nevermind
- 1310nm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Will this also allow you to grab console?
- FelixWankel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I haven't tried it myself yet with this hack, but I know that when connecting to 2000/2003 servers, if you run 'mstsc /console' instead of just 'mstsc' then it will take over the console. Most likely it'll work here, too.
- goldenratio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Marked as lame for a few reasons:
1) This "hack" involves replacing the latest version of Termsrv.dll with an older version that is known to have active exploits. This is a security risk.
2) This does not work if your machine is on a domain.
3) This "hack" would likely be disabled by Windows Update. - eLiTeGoodGuy, on 10/12/2007, -10/+8your replacing your Termsrv.dll for a file that you provide. How can we be sure that you haven't done anything to this file?
