- Slashriffs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+109I kinda like how the sounds don't really attack you.
In XP it seems as though the sounds say "OMFG DON'T DO THAT! $%^&"
Vista is like "oh, you did that? its cool" - riddlebox, on 10/12/2007, -6/+74I agree...XP Was like...Oh no you you didnt mother "explicit". XP sounds were like pistol whips to the back of you cranium.
Vista is all like...Don't worry I got this ***** under control...I'm not yelling. I'm windows on XanaX....I can't see things all clearly now. - timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+59Glad to know all the annoying ones are far less annoying.
- wtcajesuit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+40You know, if we switch to Vista we'll be hearing these sounds for the next 5 or more years until the next iteration of Windows appears. I'm certainly not in a hurry to hear them now.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36Apparently old Powerbooks have this feature (classic video):
http://www.prangstgrup.com/startupsound/quicktime.php - oogee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+37They should just make sure "Windows Error" is the least annoying
- beaunewcomb, on 10/12/2007, -7/+32honestly to me it sounds like he took the original sounds and just applied a high pass filter, added a blur reverb and phased them a little to sound a little more pleasing to the ear.
The startup and shutdown sounds are the only ones that immediately strike me as different.. - gnomon, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29"Not that impressive but maybe I'm biased because I'm a musician."
So is Fripp... - stevetures, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Nope, he definitely re-recorded them. Seems like the original sounds were compressed and loud, with lots of piano low-end. The new ones are down on the volume, and they have a ton of 'Harmonic Exciter' (i.e. treble re-synthesis) to give it the high-end shimmer. Humans aren't used to hearing aural sounds that high, so it doesn't have to be that loud to stand out.
(audio engineer / mastering) - bblades, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22I expected the startup to be a 5 minute soundscape, i am disappointed
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21The logon/logoff is in RC2. I don't think any of the others are.
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15The old joke was to make someone's startup sound a 10 minute WAV of someone yelling "I'M LOOKING AT GAY PORN" or something equally obnoxious. Bonus points if they don't know how to change/disable the startup sound.
- alwaysmc2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16That makes no sense. If the next OS's *sounds* are too different, then users may switch over to a completely different OS out of frustration?
again, that makes no sense. - BlinkSumGreen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I like how we watch a video about Windows in Quicktime...
- illt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13still not pleasing to me at all.
much better sounds are found in community sound packs.
i don't even know how the XP startup/shutdown sounds even made it into the product, they're so obnoxious. - snlildude87, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=71604&mode=linearplus
- maninblac1, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18"OMFG DON'T DO THAT! $%^&"
I love it!
Though, i didn't hear any sounds i recognize from RC2, so they really must be using a whole new sound scheme for RTM. - Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12@illt
People still make sound packs for Windows? I haven't seen any sound packs since the Win98 days. - Mandeep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Anyone find it ironic that what you just said has been said 34984399 times?
- OpCzar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Honestly, I turn off all system sounds these days. Nothing more annoying than a cascade of errors beeping through the pc speaker and external speakers!
- Jowe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9those sounds are so wimpy.
- maxsunset, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Damn it! I was hoping for a RIPPING guitar solo, coming from Fripp. The man is a guitar god! Otherwise, much better.
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8stealing someone's joke is only legitimate if you abuse first post and have it show up higher than theirs. sorry.
- Brian48216, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Reminds me of noises from Final Fantasy
- stevetures, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10don't forget the Pranstrupp Powerbook Startup Sound prank... fckin hilarious...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mt1bgsvsWms
(for the 5 people out there who haven't seen it) - insinuate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Yay. I can use Vista late at night and not be afraid to actually turn my speakers past 2...
- PicklePower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Those aren't these sounds...those are Vista mock-up sound back from April that someone else did.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"Anyone have any clue what effects he's pushing that gibson thru???
All of them. :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9An astronomical improvement. The XP sounds literally make me cringe, but I found the Vista ones to be quite pleasant.
- warble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Apparently there's not much difference at all, they're just even more ignorable. I do appreciate that the error/message sounds are toned down, they're pretty annoying..
Can't we have clicks and beeps and whirs to talk to us, R2D2 style? That would be much more informative. Then the little window that pops up from the taskbar that translates for us.
Wait.. that's what already happens. nevermind. - stevetures, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10True.
But I want to know now how much I will hate them.
Not bad. I like the sounds. Fresh ones would have been nice, but sometimes you have to change people gradually. Too much low end on the XP sounds. - defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Nice blatant rippoff of shashriff's comment.
- Dwarfthemike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6i like those a million times better than XP. they are a lot less intrusive and are lighter so they don't startle you or anything like that... YAY for subtlety... who'da thought windows could be subtle?
- stevetures, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Obligatory Youtube link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQe-2USL_iU - lgc90, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This may sound strange to some people, but I feel like they sound like holograms, if that makes any sense. This ties into the whole aero transparency thing.
- tomzer1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Anyone find it ironic that the guy presented the sounds in Apple's QuickTime? (grin)
- JF1288, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6All the vista sounds seem really dweeby
- cheez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5i actually liked the xp "tada" better than the vista
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4They are a bit more easy on the ears.
But how much did they pay Robert Fripp to make these sounds? I'm having my doubts that Robert Fripp even did any of these, this all sounds like stuff done on a straight keyboard, not a guitar/guitar-synth. - InsaneMachine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4know where we can download said startup sound? I'm sure it will be hilarious to set that to someone's computer. Or does someone have a better start up sound?
- bbxboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They still suck... although they make me want to strangle somebody less.
- bobmagoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it kinda gives you insight into what they're trying to pull of with this new OS. From what i've played with on some of the Vista betas it at least looks really nice. Hopefully they get more than just the multimedia right. despite the fact that they are the company everyone loves to hate, i think they have a pretty good shot with vista.
- greenbox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4it's seems like Microsoft really like the legend of Zelda.
- s0l3x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I wonder how long it will take for someone to create a remake of "Windows Noises"
http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/noises.php - unabonger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Anyone have any clue what effects he's pushing that gibson thru???
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3/System Preferences/Sound/Sound Effects/ Uncheck "Play user interface sound effects"
- pixelmixer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He never said it was supposed to make sense. He was simply speculating as to why the sounds are more-or-less the same as they were on XP. I noticed the similarities also, and I think alot of people did.
So the most logical explanation, aside from straight-up calling them lazy, is to assume they did it because people were used to it, and therefore wouldn't want it to change in the next iteration. So they would still be familiar with it instead of moving entirely to a new setup. - waxdart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3These sounds will be _every bit as annoying_ once you've become inured to them, and begin to associate them with mundane windows operations, esp. system errors.
The XP sounds weren't necessarily bad to begin with, they just accompanied bad things. Like _using_ XP. - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apparently whoever Robert Fripp may be, he is a master of converting orchestral sounds into fairy synthesizer sounds. A wave of a limp wrist in his general vicinity!
- dSlifer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That video was amazing, I was laughing the whole time!
Yeah, I expected a longer startup noise as well, I mean they did get Robert Fripp to do it! I wonder how much he was paid to do very little -
